Given as how I've noticed we usually discuss 80's/Hair Metal here in the Music Forum, I was wondering if we had any fans of heavier metal on the boards. By heavier, I mean thrash, black, death metal, etc. I'll start with some releases I own:

Sepultura-Beneath the Remains [The best thrash album ever in my opinion]
Slayer-Seasons in the Abyss
Venom-Black Metal
Obituary-Cause of Death
Death-The Sound of Perseverance
Morbid Angel-Covenant [Just got it today]
Dethklok-The Dethalbum [The band that made me embrace Death Metal]

Just a few. I'm not that big of a death or black metal fan, I'm usually a thrasher. I've got a lot more thrash than I listed, I just didn't feel like typing it.
So, anyone else enjoy extreme metal?

I'm not really into anything too extreme. I listen to a lot of 90s alternative and then stuff like Skid Row, Motley Crue, etc. I'm also a big fan of stuff like The Who, Skynyrd, CCR. Then my all time favorites are GNR, Van Halen (a huge Red Rocker fan), and Aerosmith.

I can also do a little punk. But again nothing too extreme. When people start screaming and yelling shit I can't understand, I can only take so much. Aside from that, I pretty much like all music. Country, R&B, Rap, whatever. It seems like the only stuff I really stay away from is that real extreme hardcore, fucking brutal rock.

I downloaded a bunch of music from from the Worlds Strongest Man Contest "soundtrack" because I seemed to like it when they played small portions of it while I was watching the show. But then when I was trying to listen to it after I downloaded it, I really couldn't take it.

I don't really listen to any glam bands/hair bands as much as people do here (unless WASP falls under that category), and I am most definitely into extreme music (if you want to call it that.) Seasons In The Abyss is Slayer's weakest good album (everything after that doesn't exist to me), but its got some fun tunes like the title track and War Ensemble. I personally prefer Hell Awaits. Beneath The Remains is an amazing thrash album, though I wouldn't quite call it the best ever. That award IMO goes to Vio-lence "Eternal Nightmare."

Anyway here are some of my personal favorites of "extreme music"

Vio-lence would be a good contender if it wasn't for Sean Killian's "wounded puppy" vocals. In my opinion, he's one of the worst vocalists in thrash.

The thing about Seasons that I like is the mix of fast and slow. "Reign" was a good album, but you really had to listen to the whole album straight through in order to get the full experience. Not that I don't love those bands, but their placement into the extreme metal subgenre is debatable.

Sean Killian just sounds like a dude yelling into a microphone to me, but it's not the first time I've heard complaints about his vocals.

Yea Seasons is a mixture of fast and slow, but I don't like most of the songs on there very much. Born Of Fire and Hallowed Point sound practically identical to me. What I don't understand is why people call South Of Heaven a "slow album." There's really only about 4 slow songs on there. I mean if "Silent Scream" isn't a fast song, I don't want to know what is.

In terms of your current shopping list, here's what I can reccomend.

Celtic Frost: To Mega Therion. Actually there was an earlier incarnation of that band called Hellhammer, which is a slightly rawer and sloppier version of Celtic Frost. Truth be told there isn't much of a difference between the two bands but Tom Warrior wanted to change the name cos he's a egomaniac. Regardless, Hellhammer put out an EP called Apocolyptic Raids. It is quite worth tracking down. And there was actually a CD released recently of Hellhammer demos. I haven't heard it nor do I have interest in it, but hey, I'm sure you could find it in a CD store (moreso than Apocalyptic Raids)

Mercyful Fate: Melissa, Don't Break The Oath

As for the other bands, you've mentioned, the releases I posted are probably their best albums, and don't want to repeat myself

Do you know where Bathory got their name from? I've never heard their music but I want to say they used the last name of a infamous Countess of Hungary of the 16th century, Erzabet(or Elizabeth in english) Bathory, who was considered in legend to be the female version of Dracula more or less. It is believed that she killed upwards of 600 men and women in her torture chambers.

That sounds like an accurate place for an extreme metal band to get their name.

Out of all of the bands on the lists, I like slayer the most, but like JRA, I'm more into thrash than death metal. I'm more of a Megadeth kind of person.

Funny thing is the only Death Metal albums I own are Death albums (well and Possessed, if they count). Though there is a Carcass re-release coming out. Perhaps I'll pick that up

Yeah, that should be where Quorthon (the founder, R.I.P.) got the name from. Venom also wrote an awesome song about the same subject called "Countess Bathory."

, maybe I will check them out. Songs about historical figures are always something I try and look into. Now are they a screaming band for a singing band? If they are anythign like Macabre I won't be able to listen to them.

Well, I've never heard Macabre, but Bathory is definitely a Screeching band. In fact if I'm not mistaken Quorthon was the first guy to do that type of Black Metal vocal. I'm not a huge fan of it but it grows on you I guess.

Sometimes you can understand and sometimes you can't. Part of the problem is he some of the songs are so fast, that I probably couldn't understand what he's saying if he was actually singing it.

Children of Bodom: Any album (not sure if they qualify as extreme though)

That's all I can think of right now, that's not been mentioned already. I realize that a few of these bands are pretty cheesey, and the genre isn't the most flexible as far as structure goes, but it's still a fun listen.

I own Bodom's "Follow the Reaper", and its a good album. Alexi could work on his vocals, though. And Bodom would qualify as Extreme. Not too much of a Dimmu or Dying Fetus fan, though.
I can take Napalm Death in small doses, which is easy to do since their earlier material was only about a minute long in most cases. "Parasites" and "Suffer the Children" are probably my favorites. It should be noted that Napalm Death's first album is more of an extreme punk (Grindcore) album than a metal album. They started adding Death Metal into their sound later.

I would definately say Groove counts as extreme, why wouldn't it? I used to be fairly big into thrash but have largely moved onto "groove" bands. Pantera's The Great Southern Trendkill is one of the best records out there++.

Alexi's vocals have definitely improved since then, he's begun to sing melodically here and there on later albums.

Quoted for fucking truth with regard to TGSTK being one of the best. My second favorite metal album after Sepultura's Beneath the Remains.
Odd that I didn't consider myself that big of a death metal fan back when I first did this topic. Now I would say it's my 3rd favorite genre of metal, after thrash and classic. I also think Slayer's "Reign in Blood" is my favorite, as opposed to "Seasons." I've also come to the conclusion that most black metal sucks ass. My opinion. Oh, how I've changed!
