Games that are so underrated, they're overrated

This topic's a little trickier than the last one. Here goes...

So a game comes out. Over the course of its existence, it seemingly doesn't get the attention it deserves from the general gaming public. So you track down this game and play it. Initially, you can't believe the game became obscure, but then, at some point, you discover or realize something about the game that makes you think, "Maybe it doesn't deserve that much praise." I see this sentiment in the following games:

Tombs & Treasure: I've said it before and I'll say it again: The ending pissed me off. All that ass-busting to get it right and I still never get to go home...
WCW Wrestling: I managed to track this game down after reading the praises Syd sang about it during his rant about WWF Wrestlemania. However, there was one thing about the game he neglected to mention: The Ghosts 'n Goblins-dwarfing difficulty. I've only ever won one match in that game and I'm pretty sure that was a fluke.
Beyond Good And Evil: This game's ending also upset me, though not quite to the degree that Tombs & Treasure's did.

You guys?

Dragon Warrior 8 for PS2. I never even heard of it until I saw it at a store and bought it up, having loved every other Dragon Warrior game. The game starts promising, but it gets to the point where you just walk around, fight slimes in the first-person, go from town to town...like any other RPG, but not fun. I never saw advertising for it, and having enjoyed it for maybe an hour, I conisder it's lack of publicity justified.

I never played it myself, but Beyond Good & Evil did get quite a bit of attention when it dropped

I'll agree with Earthbound. It started out as an under the radar game that didn't really get the attention it deserved, but after SSB, it suddenly became one of everyone's favorite games. All these people suddenly have fond memories of playing a game that nobody bought? I find that hard to believe. I know there are people who were into it beforehand and it's a cult favorite and all that, but the truth is the majority of people didn't give a shit until after SSB. It became like the cool gamer thing to know all about this obscure character Ness so they could act elitist towards those who never played the game, and shit just spiraled out of control from there. Bottomline: it's a solid RPG, but not deserving of all the praise it gets today.

i think jprime is trying to talk about cult classics.

games that never made it big commercially but found their niche among certain groups of gamers. and once you played said game, you felt it was overrated.

If what username is saying is the reason for this thread I'll have to go with FF, I honestly never got into any of them.

except that ff exploded and crawled out of just being a niche/cult game about 10 years ago by selling millions and millions.

Psychonauts: Advertised like crazy on G4 in 2005. Got the game a year later. Better than Super Mario Sunshine in some aspects.
Game is still referenced as a sleeper hit, taking the #1 in most lists of being that subject.

Beyond Good and Evil, thats another one.....oh yea off topic: there is rumors of a sequel? No?

Yeah, Psychonauts is pretty shitty, despite everyone saying it's a 'sleeper hit'. It's another boring 3D platformer.

Beyond Good & Evil is fucking great, though.

There never was an image here, what the fuck are you talking about?

Dragon Quest 8 actually was advertised pretty heavily on TV. I saw ads for it all the time on G4 and during RAW IS WAR. It's probably the only recent Dragon Quest game that actually got an ad campaign.

That "All your base are belong to us" game. Everybody knows all the bad quotes, but never played the game.

You mean Zero Wing?

It's actually an OK game, but a little boring.

Yeah. I just power up the green homing laser, and then hold the button. You can get through the whole game like that.
