It's not a direct parallel but Tekken Force mode from Tekken 3 was kind of like that. The special moves have problems when you can face 2 directions as well. Try to do the normal half circle would turn your character around.

I guess it's worth looking into.

tekken force in tekken 3 was the best. it was straight side scrollign beat em up action.
