I have my Wii hooked up to Wii Connect 24, which means that when it's not on, it's in a state of stand-by so that can receive Miis and messages from the internet. For awhile now, I've had a problem where I'll turn the system on, load the OS, and immediately try and click the Shop Channel or the current disc only to have the system hang indefinitely after the start button is pressed.
One of my co-workers suggested that my system was overheating and that I should look into getting the Nyko Wii Intercooler: http://www.amazon.com/Nyko-87007-Nintendo-Wii-Intercooler/dp/B000LFHWFU/ref=pd_bbs_9?ie=UTF8&s=videogames&qid=1211553725&sr=8-9
Well I did and it fixed my problem. My system doesn't crash anymore and it was easy as hell to install. It clips into the power cord and then the ventilation shaft on the back. It turns on when it feels that your system is running hot, which is generally only during gameplay. The only downside is that it is loud. But it's not so loud that you'll notice it during typical gameplay. If you're playing a really quiet game, if such a thing exists, you'll definitely hear it.

I've been noticing the volume in games ever since my wii's disc drive started spinning loudly and obnoxiously.
The games I like to play at night in the dark before bed are the biggest culprits of the drive spin completely ruining the game for me. Mp3 and Tomb raider anniversary are completely ruined, especially tomb raider because the music is soft and really the quiet exploration of the environment is what makes that game. DQ swords is also obnoxious with the drive spin and brawl will sometimes not even read until I eject and re insert it several times.
I don't know what started the noise but I do treat my wii pretty shittily, I smoke around it, I just throw it in a bag with a bunch of other crap when I take it somewhere, I leave it plugged in all the time with wc24 on. I'm going to commit and have it serviced one day, the warranty is way fucking over. I'd just buy a new one if I could transfer my VC games and Friend codes and keep it as my travel wii and keep my nice one for personal use.
This is the only nintendo console I've ever owned that has crapped out on me so quickly. I mean my original NES still works just fine so it really pisses me off that my wii ate shit so fast.

I hear smoking around consoles is really bad. Anyway, maybe it's cause my wii is relatively new and doesn't have the mileage yet, but I haven't noticed any overheating issues and I leave wiiconnect24 running too. Hell, I don't even have a cooling system for my 360 and I haven't had a problem with that yet either after almost 2 years. *knocks on wood*

I don't think you can transfer VC games to a new console without sending it into Nintendo, but everything else can be moved via an SD card.

I've killed a few consoles by letting everyone crowd around the TV and system chain smoking, I highly recomend you do not smoke near your electronics.

Can't they make a system that doesn't overheat? Sony, Microsoft and now Nintendo. This is 2008 for fuck's sake.
Whatever these cooling gizmos do, I don't see why they can't build their systems with one already installed.

Not only can it fuck up the ventilation but it will make it look yellow.
It might even possibly give it cancer

You could also keep it in a well ventilated area too, next to the TV or inside an entertainment center is not a prime location, but then again neither is the floor.
I used to have my PS3 in my Entertainment Stand Cabinet but then when it got to be, what felt like 100 degrees, I decided to move it into my living room and now it never really gets that warm. Also dusting on a regular basis is a good idea.

It's hard to keep it in a well-ventilated area. Most people enjoy a degree of neatness in their homes and choose to keep their consoles in an entertainment center. Console makers should know this - and they do. If you have a rug, the floor is much worse place to keep your console. Static electricity can totally fuck up your console, especially in the winter time.

I guess it all depends on your entertainment center. Mine is pretty well open from the pic I have posted before, but yea I understand the neatness thing, Hell I get flustered is everything is not at perfect right angles.

I keep my shit on a wood coffee table, in the open, and I always make sure they have ventilation. It looks neat as anything and I've never had a problem with overheating. Plus with wood you get the added benefit of easy cleaning and no static problems.
