so, the thread on overrated/underrated video games made me think of movies that were over/under as well.

over - 300
the movie is not terrible but its not as great as everyone says it is. i thought it had a lot of unnecessary stuff added from the graphic novel which detracted from the film itself. the whole subplot w/the wife talking to the senate was unnecessary imo. the traitor was unnecessary. the weird mutant guys were really unnecessary. the movie wasnt terrible as i liked the look of it. i thought the action sequences were good, and although i can understand that the slow motion was used to make the action sequences easier to follow, i feel the slow-mo was a tad overused. and the decapitations were a little too gratuitous

under - dumb & dumber
every scene in it is funny and quotable. it was snubbed from the top 100 funny movies from AFI (but fucking fargo was in that list). but i really think its a hilarious movie and jim carrey is awesome in it

i know my underrated pick wasnt a strong pick but its 5am and im at work so im tired.

What was unnecessary about the traitor? According to Herodot, that's how it happened.

I pretty much agree with that. I like the movie a lot, but mostly just in the sense that it looks really pretty and being a comic nerd and Frank Miller fan (when he was still sane), I pretty much have to. But that being said, pretty much everything added to the movie that's not in the comics is unnecessary, especially the subplot with his wife and the shifty minister of whatever he was there. The rhino is probably the best added thing in there.

As for underrated, Falling Down. I know we all love it, but a lot of regular people have never even heard of it. Michael Douglas going on an insane rampage!

the other thing i didnt like about 300, was how they didnt emphasize Dilios' storytelling like they did in the comic book. in the comic book he was always spinning stories just to establish the fact that he was a good speaker, but in the movie he only tells the story in the beginning and end. so that wasnt well executed imo.

i agree about Falling Down. that is a badass movie and Mr. cradle robber kicks ass in it.

the movie has his narration and story telling. what do you mean the middle and the end? any time you hear a voice over, which is like the entire thing, its him telling the other soldiers.

Yeah, but in the comic when the Persian messenger arrives at Hadrian's wall to bitch at the Spartans, Delios was just finishing up a story about the character of Spartans and whatnot and it gives the moment way more weight instead of just them sneering at the messenger the first two times he yells at them like in the movie.

Overrated- Citizen Kane
It is still a great movie, but it is in no way the best movie ever made. It was innovative for its time, but I still found some of the early cuts sloppy and the writing was weak in some places. Still an amazing movie though.

Underrated- The Wickerman
I love unintentional comedies, so I really enjoyed this movie. I still laugh at the bear suit scene.

3000 Miles To Graceland is pretty underrated.

As a trilogy, The Matrix is overrated. The first movie is great, then it falls apart.

Underrated -

Final Fantasy: Spirits Within. Am I the only one who liked this?

Jackie Brown is underrated. Whenever I hear somebody talk about a Tarantino flick it's usually Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction or Kill Bill. Never Jackie Brown; probably because it's too "conventional". I've watched Jackie Brown twice as much as I've watched those other three taken together, and I like it exactly for the fact that it is all about those loveable characters interacting and doesn't try to be "showy" in its storytelling.

I thought it was decent but i never played any of the FFs so i'm not a fan boy who would bitch about how it had nothing to do with any final fantasy game. I find that complaint hilarious because none of the FF games have anything in common either so technically the movie was just continuing the trend.

Well most of them have some sort of fantasy. Some instance of sword swinging good guys taking down bad guys. The movie had the final fantasy term slapped on to capitalize. Even the very sciency final fantasy games like 8 or 4 still have medieval feel somehow. the movie had none.

^Exactly. If there was one game franchise that could have turned out a good movies, it was Final Fantasy. Sadly, rather than using the excellent stories or elements that the games had already developed, they pissed the opportunity away by half-assing a story, loading up on visual effects, and slapping the franchise name on the movie to sell tickets.

The film wasn't exactly awful, but it in no way lived up to the potential of what a Final Fantasy film could have been.

Overrated- Star Wars Episode I - perhaps the MOST overrated film in film history. This movie would have been a bomb had it not been the first star wars film since 83.

Office Space - I know its very hard to say this movie is overrated, but when your dental office secretary makes a crack from it, you know its dead. Not overrated, just beaten to death.

Underrated- Major League - I love this movie. I know it reeks of average 1991 comedy/drama, but I absolutely love this movie and its multiple laughs and jokes and baseball.

Wet Hot American Summer - You have to see this movie. I thought it was a porno at first too, but it turns out this is a hilarious comedy independent flick with a lot of top or middle "tiered" stars having roles in this. Good stuff. Definately check this one out.

Regarding Henry - Quite possibly the only Harrison Ford film that ranks right up there with Indiana Jones. This is a timeless classic drama that brought me to tears. Make fun of me and I will eat your children. Hopefully someone on here has seen it. Just check it out.

Not many people like Episde 1. most fans hate its pacing and lack of villain time on screen. throw in jar jar and you have complete loathing from star wars fanboys. thats not even to mention the robotic acting of the little anakin kid.

yeah. i hated how jake lloyd was happy and cheering in that final scene where he flew that starfighter. little 6 year old treating it like a video game. i would've crapped my pants if i was in that situation.

But ... but ... MIDICHLORIANS!

And that reminds me of another underrated movie: THX-1138, George Lucas' first feature film. It's one of the best science fiction movies, but it rarely gets mention for it. It's also a rare case of a special edition with added special effects being better than the original.

Overrated: Forrest Gump. Take a modern History class and throw in a retard. The movie wasn't AWFUL, but I guess I'm still bitter it kept beating out Pulp Fiction at the Academy Awards. Not to any surprise i guess... The Academy Awards are just an event where Hollowood collectively gathers to pass out hand jobs to eachother anyway.

Underrated: Dirty Work.. Like all other SNL Movies... thin plotline created for the sole purpose of setting up jokes for whatever lead character. Unlike most of the other movies launched by ex-SNL members, this movie was really funny, and did absolutely awful in the box office.

Underrated - Robocop 2

Not as good as the original, but the fight between the two robots at the end was great. The stop-motion animatronics were awesome, especially since I'm not a big fan of CGI.

Gump is a good movie, but I always resented it because it helped launch Tom Hanks career as a major box office draw. Before Forest Gump and Philadelphia, Hanks was just some douchebag who starred in utter tripe like Bachelor Party, The Man With One Red Shoe, Joe vs. The Volcano, and The Money Pit. Then suddenly everyone he gets a few good roles and everyone loves his wooden acting.

Well besides Gump and Castaway I cant remember him being in any other movies, which adds up with your point.
