My bestest foreign friend ever (I've made friends with a bunch of the exchange students at my university from volunteering with ESL programs o.o) is Chinese, but she grew up in Japan and can't read Chinese fluently. So, last summer she went to China for a year to study. She's supposed to be coming back this August to attend classes again at our university and eventually she'll graduate from our college.

I haven't heard from her since before that massive earthquake. Before we were talking online every couple of days but now I haven't heard from her since the 6th. I'm not sure if the earthquake threw out internet and that's why she hasn't been on or if it's for an entirely different and much more serious reason.

I'm trying not to panic and think the worse but the death toll is astronomical already and it's only climbing.

I guess there's nothing I can do but wait and see.

My girlfriend is chinese and has a large family still in china. her cousins work in the are and saw the damage. they said it was pretty bad = \. the quake effected pretty much every part of mainland china so it probably makes sense that communication is down in some areas.

Sorry, I forgot to quote what post of yours I was referencing. I was also refering to Thumper's mother from Bambi, who is famous for saying, "If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all."

Nah, I was a rude kid and I used to point out fat people and exclaim loudly about them, so mom worked that rule into my head. 8D

On a side note, I checked IMDB and apparently my memory of Bambi is highly distorted. Thumper's mother chatises him for being rude, but apparently it was Thumper who said the line, quoting his father. Meh.

I considered dropping all my responsibilities here to go volunteer to help manage the disaster and help victims in China. But then again, the Chinese government would probably think we were dirty spies creating a national security issue.

No...that would be the Burmese government. The Chinese have been excepting aid, and even asking for it, which is awfully humble of them. More than I would expect anyway.

Burma is a quandary. On one hand, if we give the country aid, it will all be seized by the military junta, who is looking for a way to use starvation and disease to control the population. On the other, if we don't, lots of people die. It's a difficult road to travel.
