So here is what I own.

  • Nintendo Gamecube
  • Nintendo Wii
  • HD TV (16:9 Ratio)

Ideally I would be able to play Gamecube games on the Wii with ease.

HA HA HA, why would it be easy?

The Wii supports 16:9, but doesn't revert back to 4:3 for GameCube games.

What the fuck.

Seriously? What the fuck.

Just make a database as a Wii update that tells the system to fit the screen at the correct aspect ratio based on the game's ability. This would take like 10KB of space on the machine.

Fuck it, be lazy just add another menu setting under display for Gamecube games only.

Do it.

DO IT!

Doesn't the TV itself have an option that lets you switch to 4:3 aspect ratio?

The TV does allow for piller boxing. However it would require using the TV remote and going several menu's in every time I wanted to make a change.

It shouldn't be on the TV to decide anything. The Cablebox can handle its own, the Wii should too.

My solution thus far has been to keep the Gamecube and Wii both hooked up. It is getting annoying though now that Wii games have decided to use Gamecube controllers (That are no longer even fucking made).

Last month, Nintendo reintroduced the GCN controller in Japan: http://kotaku.com/377645/wii-gets-a-pretty-new-gamecube-controller

No word yet on a US release. Also no word on why they brought back the classic GNC controller and not the wireless Wavebird instead.

You can still find the platinum GCN controllers at gamestop and other places fairly easily...

I bought one, but the cord is so damn short it barely reached my couch and I was always afraid of the wii getting yanked off the shelf so I broke down and bought 2 wavebirds off ebay for just under $40 a piece shipped. They were both in excellent condition so I'm happy with the purchase. I know these things used to run for like $25 new, but considering a wiimote and chuck is $60 and a wireless 360 controller is $50, it doesn't seem too bad. If Nintendo re-releases the wavebird, I'll probably buy 2 more.

I can't find a WaveBird for a decent price anywhere. And if I'm paying upwards of $50 for it, it better be the special edition Char customized version, as seen here:

Maybe Nintendo secretly hates us.

try this.

go into the wii settings and set the aspect ratio to 4;3 and then pop a gamecube game in. i dont own a high def tv or any gamecube games right now, and aside from smASH i barely touch my wii, so i cant test that myself.

I think it's more of a subtle little "fuck you" to everyone who decided not to buy a gamecube

I know that this exists. It is the fact that I need to do it manually and it is deep within a system menu. Also it needs to be adjusted every time I switch games.

It is just piss-poor design.

Then go buy one. They're cheaper than a single Wii game now.

I see used one go for $20 - $40 at game stores and hawk shops.

My local Fred Meyers was clearancing brand new ones a few weeks ago for $40 each.

I was referring to the wavebird, not the gamecube console. What I was implying was that most people who bought the gamecube during its run would already have stocked up on wavebirds, which they are now able to use with their wii. Now that wavebirds are discontinued, those who skipped the gamecube and bought the wii have no means of acquiring the wireless controller, outside of paying a premium price on ebay or getting lucky at pawn shops, garage sales, etc. Hence, nintendo is giving those like me the shaft for skipping over the gamecube, which did sell poorly compared to the PS2 and XBOX mind you.

I get the impression that Nintendo never gave a shit about competing with their desktop consoles. It is always about making their vision come to fruition.

They could be competitive with graphics cards, but they aren't.

They could be competitive with online interface, but they aren't.

They could be competitive with storage space, but they aren't.

Yet, they make money hand over foot and the games that come out for the system by Nintendo are exactly what Nintendo wants to put out.

Comparing Gamecube sales to XBOX and PS2 sales is irrelevant if Nintendo doesn't care.
