From the 8-bit: A multi-genre-crossing game starring butt-kicking animals that only a handful of people have beaten.
From the 16-bit: A comedic sci-fi RPG starring four special children that only a handful of people have played.
Just as Mega Man 2 should have been the first game to win three Nesters, Battletoads actually should have been the first game to win four Nesters. Inexplicably, it didn't win Best Challenge For The NES. That plum went to Ninja Gaiden III: The Ancient Ship Of Doom, which is only a quarter, tops, as hard as Battletoads.

I can't say I care much for either of these, but...Earthbound is highly overrated imo (and I hate people who use Ness and Lucas in brawl) so I'm going with Battletoads.

the only time i played battletoads has been on emulator on pc and its impossible w/keyboard controls. i played battletoads/double dragon and that was fun, but i played it on genesis (or snes... cant remember).
i never played earthbound either, but i lucas/ness on brawl are fun to use although i think ness > lucas.
so im gonna be democratic and not vote

The only Nester I care about is the emulator.
Also Battletoads ftw.

I love Earthbound. It's one of my favorite video games. I won't go into all the reasons why, but to me, Earthbound is the shit.

Everyone thinks earthbound is better than it really is. Battletoads for me.

Isn't that somewhat subjective?

Earthbound had extremely shitty sales. The game was pretty much rushed out of stores. Now all of a sudden thanks to ssb its the most amazing game ever?

Earthbound failed in the US because it was poorly promoted and it had underpowered graphics. But it was a fantastic game and it had a sizeable cult following well before SSB.
Also, the May issue of Nintendo Power had a poll where readers could e-mail in their top five picks for games that they absolutely want to see on the Virtual Console. The June edition came out a few days ago and here are the results:
1. Earthbound
2. Super Mario RPG
3. Chrono Trigger
4. Mother
5. Majoras Mask
Both Earthbound was #1, ahead of both Super Mario RPG and Chrono Trigger. And Earthbound Zero (Mother) made the list as well. So, uh, I'd say Earthbound is fairly popular.

The fact that Earthbound has a large cult following has next to absolutely nothing to do with SSB.
But yeah, it sold badly. And we all know good sales are indicative of the quality of a product. Take a look at the billboard charts or the top selling movies in the last few years.
Used to, it was cool to drop Earthbound into a discussion. It's what the cool kids did. Like listening to the Velvet Underground or Sonic Youth or something. Lately, I've noticed things have turned around and now the cool thing to do is bash Earthbound or call it overrated. It's funny how things change.

I'm referring to 10 or so years ago. When it was in stores thus the comment of how quick it was out of the stores. Unless you have seen it in may or june it a store somwhere.
Not now. I know the game and its series is extremely popular now. To me its following before ssb was cult. Now its alot more mainstream. When ssb came out it seemed everyone rushed out and go the rom as that was around the same are i can remember emulation being pretty big.
I guess this makes me cool butit didnt really wow me when i had it as a rental. I thought the story was weird, the gameplay was ok, but all in all it felt decent. Not like the way its portrayed as a godlike game that i see and read about in various places.

A lot of great games weren't the best received when they were released. That doesn't make them any less good.
I had Earthbound back when my family owned a video store eons before SSB was ever released. It's been one of my favorite games for years. It's a great game, even if I agree a lot of the following is superficial. To write it off for that reason alone is akin to saying that a band's music sucks because their fans are annoying.

In no way do i base my opinion on that. I did state its overrated but i never said my judgment was based on that. Somehow you came to that conclusion on your own.
Like i said i had the game for a week rental. Then i dled the rom a few years later. The game was pretty ok.
Besides i never said the game sucked. I'm just saying a lot of people make it out as something bigger than it is. Thats how i see it anyway.
And for what scott was saying about the coolness that just seems like cause and effect for me. You have action and reaction. If one game is constantly brought up maybe the reaction is people say it isn't?

To be fair, I can see how the constant praise the game gets can get annoying. It gets somewhat annoying to me even, for very different reasons.
At any rate, Earthbound has always been and always will be one of my absolute favorite games. It was one of my first experiences with RPGs. When I was growing up, My parents weren't about to just buy me a 60 dollar game whenever I wanted, but they did let me rent a game every week or so. I rented Earthbound no less than a dozen times before they finally decided it was financially wiser to just buy me the damn thing. Earthbound came in an awesome oversized box that also contained the strategy guide. I don't remember details about any birthday or Christmas present I got growing up, but I remember every detail of opening that box. Earthbound was a game that somehow managed to feel incredibly unique despite the fact that it's gameplay was rigidly conventional. The game just oozes with charm and sappiness. Every time I play it these days I feel like the Grinch looking down on all those merry fucking Whos.

Forgive my reaction, then. With that being your only criticism I assumed it was the reason you were judging the game. I stand corrected.
At any rate, Earthbound has always struck me as a take it or leave it kind of game. For me, it was one of the most entertaining games I've ever played. I can't expect everyone to react that way.

Earthbound, probably a bit blown out of proportion, but still a good RPG.
Battletoads, despite being freaky hard with nothing resembling an interesting story, is not overrated at all.
