I'm starting to hate all browsers. I try never to use IE, I use Firefox the most, but I also use Opera (cause some sites crash Firefox) and Safari (mostly for reading). Luckily, those three have yet to betray me. They're like my companions on some sort of barbaric quest, each with their own strengths and weaknesses; some sidetracking me on side quests - *mumbles into complete obscurity*.

Alright, uninstall all your current shitty anti-malware/anti-virus/firewall programs and install:

http://www.antivirus.comodo.com/download.html - Comodo Anti-Virus

http://www.comodo.com/boclean/CBO_download.html - Comodo BOclean anti-Malware

http://www.personalfirewall.comodo.com/download_firewall.html - Comodo Firewall

http://www.memoryfirewall.comodo.com/download.html - Comodo Memory Firewall

These things have never done me wrong before.

Now unfortunately the current version of Comodo Anti-Virus (2.0) is not compatible with Window's Vista, so if you have it you could do like I did and substitute AVG 7.5 free edition until they come out with the new version, which they say they will.

BOClean should take care of your problem, definitely.

I used to get pop-ups for that WinFixer malware, but I haven't in like months. And I'm not sure if Norton 2008 is just better at preventing that crap or I've learned what sites to avoid.

Also whenever that happens I unplug my internet connection and then close out of the window afterwards so the bastard doesn't try to install install even though I say "NO FUCK YOU", because it will.

I use Windows Firewall and AntiVir, and it seems to work pretty well.

I heard a lot of good things about comodo's firewall and it seemed to work well, expect for the fact that it slowed the shit out of my computer's start up time (literally added like 2 minutes to it). Also, installing anything was a headache because it would ask me to approve each individual file that was being changed or created. I decided I had enough and went back to using Windows Firewall. I know the XP version sucks, but on Vista it's a decent option...

I use IE mostly out of spite. Firefox is nice and all, but I'm sick of all the bullshit hype. People are always like "Blah blah blah Firefox! Use Firefox!" And it's like, who the fuck cares? It's a fucking piece of software. Anyone who takes pride in the fact that they use one browser over another or who has some sort of emotional attachment to their browser needs get the fuck away from their computer and go outside once in awhile.

And if you don't browse like a fucking retard (like I did two days ago), there aren't any problems with IE.

Yeah, computers come with IE, I see no need to change.

PS. My OCD makes me hate format changes like that. That's why I won't go Mac, because I've used a PC my whole life.

I use firefox mainly for how its search is done. When your trying to find words on a page it goes in the lower corner unlike opera and ie that sorta have the floating boxes. It seems less messy when trying to read faqs or find where you left off in articles or such.

This is the same reason I really hate Mac-fanatics (Macatics?) and militant anti-Vista or anti-Java programmers. Okay, so you like Macs better, so Vista has flaws, so you think C++ is superior to Java, fine, I really don't want to listen to you bitch about it for an hour.

I use Firefox myself because I don't like Internet Explorer, but I'll admit I don't really remember why I don't like it. I've always used Netscape over IE, and then when Netscape started falling apart I moved over to Firefox. I still use Netscape's Composer for making HTML files though.

Was this a typo? Fuck it, I don't care. I agree; Oprah IS cumbersome.

And I stick with FireFox for the cool add-ons and I don't get bombarded like I did with IE.

this wasn't always the case. IE used to suck monster balls. a lot of the improvements that they've made have been directly taken from firefox to begin with.

It's not a matter of pride, it's a matter of not wanting to reformat your PC.

Damn it... how the hell did I miss this one?

Syd,

I suggest that you follow these instructions:
http://history.sydlexia.com/index.php?title=How_to_remove_a_virus

After that, head over to:
http://www.maximumpc.com/forums/viewforum.php?f=36

And follow the instructions they have here to present a hijackthis log to

hackman2007

He will then tell you if your machine is safe.

Fun times Smile

I would do these things even if you think you are set.

I use Maxthon now.

It has none of the incompatibility problems non-IE browsers have and lots of features and good speed, plus it doesn't hog up your memory.

I like Opera but sadly so much stuff is incompatible with it.

Have to agree that Firefox users are sometimes annoying like Mac users always are...speaking of which...

Formatting should be your first option, it's in no way "extreme". What's extreme is wasting two days trying to remove self-replicating trojans that drop themselves into anything from uninstallers to NES emulators.

Rather than try and talk to some indian people I have a Compaq Presario and it refuses to let me format or do a pc recovery. I don't have a disc to restore the computer to its default because its on an included drive in the laptop. Everytime I click on format or try to do it through the DOS menu/in and out of safe-mode, it says the drive is currently in use. I never had this problem before, any ideas?

Going back to my apparently unrelated dead second hard drive... Is there any way I can recover the information off it? I'd rather not re-rip all my mp3s...

It depends what kind of dead.

If the drive is clicking, cry now and begin to reburn your MP3s. The alternative is to pay a company 1.5k-4k to fix it.

IF it isn't clicking...

A bit old, but the general concept:
http://www.maximumpc.com/article/How-To--Recover-Your-Deleted-Files

I have never used free software to fix this before, but there are now some options available if you want to try them.

There isn't Mac viruses because there isn't really any point. Most people use PCs (I know a lot of Mac users who hate that fact, but it's true), so that would be the logical group of people to write viruses for. Unless the only point of your virus is to piss people off, and not to steal information or take a computer into a botnet or anything.
