This week's Famitsu magazine has the latest tidbits on Mario Kart Wii. The game will include the wheel controller which was first revealed in last year's E3 press conference.
Players can now choose between karts and bikes to race, and each will have its advantages and disadvantages. With bikes, you can perform wheelies to speed up but this also makes turning more difficult. Both karts and bikes also now allow you to perform tricks in midair by turning the wheel left and right, or by moving the wheel up and down. Pulling them off successfully will reward players with a speed boost upon landing.
The game will feature 16 new tracks and 16 remake tracks from previous Mario Kart titles. As for multiplayer battle stages, 10 stages will be included. Players can compete against each other in races and battles with up to 4 players in split screen mode and up to 16 players via Nintendo's Wifi Connection service -- up from the previously announced cap of 12 players. You can also use your Mii as a playable character when meeting certain conditions during the game.
Lastly, there will also be a Mario Kart Channel dedicated to the game, allowing players all over the world to compete in global rankings and download ghosts of other players.
Mario Kart Wii hits stores in Japan on April 10. A North America release date has yet to be pinned down but should follow close behind. |

That only proves exactly what I already knew with the inception of the Wii; gimmicky motion controls that sacrifice digital precision for the illusion of immersion. If you care more about having fun by BEING GOOD AT THE GAME and playing it properly, use the GC controller. If you're a 3 year old, use the Wii wheel.
In a prideful and stupid effort to cover their asses in the event nobody wants to use the wheel, Nintendo has artificially limited those who opt out of the motion controls. Bravo!
On a positive note, the motorcycle racing looks pretty damn fun.

I'll admit that I really like the Wii's gimmicky controls and everything, but there are times when I appreciate precision over immersion. Also, I prefer controllers that don't strain my wrist after thirty minutes. And ones that I don't have to TEDIOUSLY RECONNECT EVERY FIVE MINUTES.
Whew. Sorry. Had some pent-up rage.
I think it's funny how Mario Kart gets its own channel, but Brawl doesn't. It seems like it would make the whole "downloading other's screenshots/replays" thing a lot easier. Oh well.

yea, from what I've heard, Mario Kart's online functionality is excellent overall. Supposidley lag is nonexistent, even in 12 player races. Makes me wish they put the same kind of effort into brawl...

I'm gonna be giving the wheel a shot. I probably won't like it, but it doesn't hurt to try.

When I fucking preordered Smash Bros. from those bastards at Amazon I didn't get the game until Tuesday because it was a Sunday release. And he gets it on Saturday!? Fuck him.
Yeah... I'm totally jealous.

Apparently the remote+nunchuck is a good combo for cycling, I can imagine that it's easier to pop wheelies than with the d-pad on the gamecube controller, because taking your thumb off the analog stick would be lame.

Technically, I can go pick it up @ midnight tonight from gamestop, but that feels way too nerdy on a saturday night just for mario kart. Plus I'll most likely be too drunk to drive by then. Depending on how the night goes and if I get bored enough, it's a possibility though...

fuck it. drink at the mall while waiting for midnight to arrive. thats what we did when we got halo 2. its easy to sneak in the beer past the guards and the gamestop employees didnt care as long as you didnt drink inside their store. and the rest of the mall is closed anyhow.

So I got the game and have been playing it for a little over an hour, and I have to say it's pretty damn fun. So far, I've only used the wheel, and while it is kind of disorientating at first, I more or less got it down after 2 or 3 rounds of time trials. While it isn't super precise (especially noticeable on sharp turns and power sliding), it is a lot better than I was expecting, and a very usable option. I played through mushroom and flower cups on 50cc and got 1st place in every race with no problems so I'm going to stick with it for the time being . Now, I haven't played a kart since MK64 so perhaps this is nothing new, but the power sliding has really been dumbed down since then. No longer can you elevate the color of the sparks by steering from left to right, you simply initiate the slide and hold it until the sparks turn red, which takes a good 5 or 6 seconds it seems. This is my biggest problem with the game so far, but I'm sure I'll get over it. The tracks in the first 2 cups didn't really wow me, except the last one in flower cup was pretty cool, wario's mine or something like that. I like how each character has a selection of karts with different attributes. The AI is kind of cheap and you will get a shit storm of items thrown at you if you are in first, but nothing that can't be overcome, so far. I didn't bother reading the manual so I haven't figured out how to pull off the tricks or anything, but every track so far seems to have ramps for pulling them off. I did try out bikes a few times on time trials and they are a lot of fun. Much faster than karts and they can turn on the dime, but that also makes them harder to control. The wheel doesn't seem too good for controlling bikes. I was able to break my fastest kart record on luigi circuit (which took like 5 attempts) on my first attempt with the bike so I guess that speaks for itself. I didn't get a chance to try out online yet, but I'll give it a go tomorrow. Anyway, I apologize for the random order of comments here. It's 2AM and I just wanted to post my initial thoughts on the game. OK, going to bed now...

I just got my copy about 3 hours ago.
I strongly suggest that people NOT buy additional wheels until they try it first with the one that comes with the game.
I tried:
Wheel
Without Wheel
With Nunchuck
With GC Wavebird
Result, I liked the Nunchuck the best.
After giving up the GC controller for SSBB I was more willing to resist using it for Kart.
Things you should know right away:
1) If you have played DoubleDash, you will always want to drive in MANUAL mode. Otherwise you get no mini-turbo. Drive in auto and you will find the game has been dumbed down dramatically. Manual has nothing to do with gears, just turning.
2) The ghosts they give you on time trials are basic ghosts that show you how to play a level, you need to do much better to unlock the real competitive ghosts.
3) You will find that the game is much less forgiving with offroading. This is because they offer 6 types of carts per player. Some karts are better than others offroad.
4) I still can't turbo-start
5) Weight matters much more in this game than it did in DoubleDash, prepare to be tossed around if you are a little guy (Sorry Koopa/Toad).
6) The bots AI is brutal in team mode, but regular 150cc is easier than DoubleDash.
So, I like it, but so far I have yet to be convinced that it is anything but an easier version of DoubleDash with new tracks. I haven't unlocked the big tracks or all characters yet, so I'll reserve final judgement.

Some New Info:
- DK is gay... I think... you will have to hear it for yourself
- There are too many "big" items in the main race. Expect lighning, blue shells etc at least once every 40 seconds while in first place.
- 12 Players on the track is too many for me. I miss 8.

I guess it's a good thing I never played double dash then because MKW seems mostly fresh to me. Sure, it's nothing groundbreaking (and I wasn't expecting it to be), but I'm having a lot of fun with it and I definitely think it was worth the 50 bucks.
Also I fully agree on the items, they need to be toned down. Or at least the major ones like lightning and blue shells should be more rare. They really should have added an option where you can customize items like in brawl, but it doesn't ruin the game IMO.

It is just an observation, but it looks like the NPCs get rocked just as badly by bad items, so I guess it is all good. In past games whoever came in first place in the first race of a tournament would be the one who you had to beat. But it looks like there are usually two or three strong players now per. So getting second or third place once or twice won't ruin your chances at a win. I must say its been hard to get used to.
I agree for multi-player that the item management should have been offered, at least on the local vs.

If you haven't figured out the turbo start, you hit it when the 2 is fully illuminated during the countdown. Took me a while to figure that out...
You can also get a boost when latiku recovers you from a fall, which is nice
I also agree with the DK comment, wtf? Wario also sounds pretty strange...
I initially said the courses weren't too interesting, but they do improve in the star and special cups. Bowser's castle is pretty incredible and probably my favorite so far. Koopa cape and the new star road are cool ones too. I also like the inclusion of the retro tracks, especially how the ghost valley track from the original super mario kart has that pixelated SNES look to it. They could have taken some better tracks from the N64 iteration though. Sherbert land and Bowser's castle were good choices, but Mario Circuit and DK Jungle parkway...not so much.
I've decided that I like the wheel and will continue using it, though it's probably not going to be for everyone.
