I've been playing through it again after beating Crisis Core, why does it get such a bad rap from everyone I never really understood that. Even though its severly dated to me I am addicted to it like I was when I first played it. Any Insights?

Who does it get a bad rap from? FF7 is generally regarded as a classic. Unfortunately, it marked the beginning of the end for the Final Fantasy franchise. FF4-FF7 were the greatest RPGs ever made and since then, no FF has even come close. FF7 also marked the beginning of the FMV era and since that time FMV has been used to blatantly misrepresent games' graphic capabilities. Have a crappy looking game? That's fine, just show your FMV in the TV ads.

I disagree... What about Final Fantasy X ??? I think, overall, it's pretty close to FF VII. I know this is gonna sound gay as hell, but I think that what makes a great RPG is the love story behind it, all RPG's with a bad love story or none at all suck.

I just seems that whenever I mention FFVII people are just like MEH!. I have really enjoyed all of them (except IX & XI). They usually mention that its a CG game and its lackluster (VII), And I just can't help but wonder what the hell makes them think that way, the game fucking rules to me, and I would love to see it not altered, but graphically updated. That could be one sick looking game for the next gen consoles.

Some of the summons (Knights of the Round, I'm looking at you) go on way too long, but FF7 is awesome. There's optional boss battles, option party characters, several sidequests... it's just fantastic.

I definitly agreed with the length of Summons gripe, but I thought it was awesome the first couple times I saw it. The game would be flawless in my book if you could skip the Summon Animations. So as of now it only gets like a 9.85 out of 10.

The graphics really hurt my opinion of VII. I didn't even really like them when they first came out. VII in recent years has also felt really cut up for me. I think I agree with the conspiracy theories that there was a major story change during development which does hurt the narrative.

Of course, VIII also had a problem with story in explaining the time rifts... and that Rinoa is really Ultimecia!!! Twisted Evil

The graphics really don't bother me now. I mean I realize I can see like every polygon used but its just the nostalgic awesomeness that this game has given me. At first the graphics were a large eyesore, this play through, but I grew accustomed to it and it's gonna make FFXIII look that much more spectacular when I play/get it.

It gets badmouthed nowadays by hipster gamers who want to look "above the mainstream." Most posts I ever see railing it just yell at people for jumping on a bandwagon.

I honestly love the game, especially the first time through. Each character is introduced and carried well, and I enjoy the story and environments throughout (Except for the damn demon wall in The Temple of the Ancients, that guy was a pain). The combat with the materia is a blast; finding just the right combinations and roles are both fun, and each character is useful in some way (Yeah, even Yuffie, you philistines).

So here's to you Mrs. Robinson. People love you more- oh, nevermind.

general conscensus seems to be that anything after FF6 sucks, even though alot of people were introduced to the series with 7. it's a trend thing, like people who go by the japanese numbering since anthology came out, even though prior to that the jap games "never existed".

sepiroth was intorduced because people weren't too enthralled with shinra being the bad guys, and originally barrett was gong to die isntead of aerith.

I love this game. One of my favorites ever. It certainly had the best story out of all of them, IMO

I think that both IX and XII were superb games. They showcase, in my oppinion, all that is good about the series.

I think you could make this argument with most Final Fantasy games. There seems to be a point in the story of all of them where you switch from battling a large empire to a single individual. The Empire vs Kefka in VI, The Empire to Zeromus in IV, The Galbadians to Ultimecia in VIII, the Alexandrians to Kuja in IX....I think the switch of focus from Shinra Inc. to Sephiroth was fairly typical FF.

And Cloud isn't emo. Squall is emo...but Cloud is not. He may not be happiest of characters, but he A) has good reason for it and B) doesn't spend much time bemoaning his misfortion. That's kinda what emo is all about.

Glad to hear that someone else thinks XII is an upturn from the rest of the post-VII FF games. Although I think part of the reason I like it is because it's also Ivalice Alliance.

As for VII, I liked it (bought the BradyGames guide for it before I even had a PSX). Crisis Core and the remake of Final Fantasy Tactics have me actually considering getting a PSP (Metal Gear: Portible Ops being another plus).

My only gripe is all the characters felt cookie cutterish. The only real differences are a few have some auto long range and the limits which again became cookie cutterish. Nothing to distinguish in terms of gameplay.

I kind of feel at a loss during Final Fantasy conversations. I only ever owned an SNES, Genesis (won in a contest; broke a few weeks later), and a Dreamcast, so I only played FF 2 and 3 (American) on SNES and FFVII on the PC. It feels like I have no real right to try to debate it, but I must say that it does feel like a little bit of the same thing each time.

One of my Top 3 games of all time. Possibly my Top 1. It's only REAL competition is Shadow of the Colossus and Phantasy Star.

Don't care if Cloud is emo. Don't care if it is all polygons. This game owns.

Thou, because I am wroth, be not dismayed, for I shall win the strife, whoever circle round within for the defence. This their insolence is not new, for of old they used it at a less secret gate, which still is found without a bolt. Above it thou didst see the dead inscription; and already on this side of it
descends the steep, passing without escort through the circles,
One such that by him the city shall be opened to us.

The only people that FF7 is getting a bad rap from are these snobby types that couldn't handle the popularity the series achieved with the release of 7. Make no mistake about it, FF7 was immensely popular and almost universally acclaimed when it came out.

Personally, I think it's the best of the numbered games in the series. I think this despite of the horrible translation and the hackneyed characters. Though I enjoyed 8 quite a lot too, I think that after 7 the series started taking itself way too seriously and the games got to be a bit overbearing. I guess millions of dollars will do that.

FFVII had the best mini games ever. Sub hunt, Snowboarding, and to a lesser extent, the motorcycle game. The battle arena kicked all sorts of ass too.
