From the 8-bit: A journey through an evil castle to destroy a classic such figure.
From the 16-bit: An intense futuristic high-risk racing game.
You know what to do.

Castlevania. I love F-Zero, but this is a no brainer.

Castlevania. Genuinely classic series that brought atmosphere and style to the NES. Two was its own thing, three was like one but better, IV was really cool, V was not bad despite not being its japanese counterpart, Symphony was fantastic, with the exception of low difficulty, and its descendants all had something to be liked (I really liked the soul system on AoE and DS).
But the original started it all, and it still plays just right. You just gotta get used to that difficulty and the nature of Belmont's jumping.

Technically it wasn't the start of the series. But you knew that. And it's better than its predecessor anyway. I hate flash scrolling.

Are you refering to Vampire Killer? Because it was released a month after Castlevania. But it was the first game in the series to be released outside of Japan.
Or were you refering to chronological order? If so, appologies for the correction.

In the franchise timeline, Vampire Killer and Castlevania are technically the same game.
And yeah, I had been going by Western release dates, as I am a Westernized douche. I guess if you want to get really technical, neither Vampire Killer or Castlevania was truly first. With only 34 days between the two releases, it is likely that both games were developed side by side and that Castlevania just happened to be completed first.

touche.
And I too am a Westernized douche. I say if they are going to keep all of the good stuff to themselves, then to hell with Japan, those selfish Bastards. They give us garbage games, but then don't give us good games becuause good games might not appeal to us. LONG LIVE SUPER MARIO BROS 2...our Super Mario Bros 2.
And in my book, Vampire Killer doesn't count at all. The popularity of the series and we still don't even have the game after all this time.

We'll get to play it eventually. MSX games are coming to the Virtual Console which means we'll finally be able to play Vampire Killer, Metal Gear 2, the better version of Metal Gear 1, The Maze of Galious, Snatcher, Monkey Academy, and all the other cool games that Konami released for the MSX.
