baroque is out today and it's a roguelike so I figure I'd start a thread about the gametype. I've heard nothing but shit about the game and it looks a bit too angsty for me but I love me some console roguelikes.

Diablo introduced me to most of the core gameplay mechanics back in the day. I like the fact that roguelikes are streamlined RPGs with a lot of the bullshit cut out. Sometimes I don't want to spend 40 minutes advancing plot so I can go grind out a couple levels to get the newest biggest baddest sword.

I also like the fact that the fuckers are hard. One life that's it, screw up and you start all over.

I've been playing Shiren the wanderer on DS when I'm not playing brawl, I recommend it wholeheartedly. It's tough, the items you can use are all interesting, the game mechanics are complex, the outside random dungeons look great, the inside ones are pretty standard, although if you've got a pickaxe you can fucking dig your own tunnels which is awesome. The game is both ends of the spectrum, it will mutilate you for free and it will also give you the most broken setups like free exp with every step, and infinite of any item you want.

The other one I spent a lot of time with was izuna which is good and has a better weapon crafting system, plus Izuna has tig ole bitties, but it's a much easier and forgiving game.

I've been trying to find a mac roguelike worth playing so I can waste time at work but I hate the computer based ones. They usually assign an action to every god damn key on the keyboard and it's just a mess to start up with.

So have you guys played any you've really liked? Diablo 1 and 2 don't count

I've played NetHack, Angband, and Ancient Domains of Mystery, three of the main ASCII roguelikes on the PC. Personally, I hate them all, but NetHack's kind of addictive and strangely fun. I really dislike the fact that it's so needlessly difficult to identify things, and I've realized that, invariably, if you try some item on yourself, it's going to be either cursed or dangerous, and if you die and let the game identify it for you, it'll be something that could've saved your life.

I'll never understand why roguelike-nerds have such an obsession with games that are out to get you and will do everything possible to kill you at any second. It's not fun to be wandering around a dungeon thinking you've got the hang of things when, uh oh! Planets aligned! You're dead.

ADOM is awesome, I just couldn't figure out what to do after rescuing the dog from the well.

Ironically, this "bullshit" is exactly why I prefer traditional RPGs over world of borecraft types of games.

Ditto with JEW. Why bother collecting pointless bullshit in a game just so you can kill things to get their bullshit? Wheres the context, the accomplishment, the emotional attachment? Its like chewing cheap gum or listening to bad pop music, while its there its sweet and enjoyable but it loses its flavor quick and ends up very bland. A good RPG resonates with you emotionally, while a bad one lingers with you in the same way taxes sound in the head of an accountant.

I don' t like the "mess up and start over" mantra either. As a matter of fact, my time is valuable.

The first one of these I played was Temple of Apshai Trilogy on Commodore 64. I liked it quite a bit, but I always feel like these games are incomplete because you can never truly do everything. Still, fun to play anyway.

I have Crawl for PC, which I fuck around with regularly. I like sacrificing stuff to my god and pleasing him for greater potency in combat. That really gets my rocks off.

RPG storylines are complete shit now, so I don't know what incredible masterpieces you're playing now to justify mashing the fight command for forty hours and saying it's all for lines of text and cg movies.

There hasn't been an interesting rpg storyline since the snes days and that was probably because I was 13 and easily amused.

roguelikes are the purest essence of a role playing game with a lot of the flash cut, and the reason I enjoy them over most standard rpgs is because I can pick them up and put them down as I want without worrying about trying to remember what plot point I'm on.

Rougelikes wtf never heard of that term used. VS what is know as TBRPG's turn based?

Turn based games are better though the concept "taking turns" is weird , but the game play is better then any other RPG

I'm so bananas I'm showing up to your open casket,
to fill it up with explosive gases,
and close it back,
with a lit match in it,
while I sit back, and just hope it catches.

Blow you to fragments,
laugh,
roll you, and smoke the ashes.

Tales had a surprisingly good story with several interesting characters, along with a few bad ones. I am not a Disgaea fan, but I can see the appeal of dealing insane amounts of damage and reaching insanely high levels.
I'd also like to add Baten Kaitos, the Paper Mario games, some of the Fire Emblem games, and Mass Effect if it counts to that list. I haven't gotten a chance to play it, but I have heard good things about Suikoden, and The World Ends With You looks great.

Skies of Arcadia had a decent plot too.

I also enjoyed Baten Kaitos, though I suppose it was a little cliche.

This one was pretty awesome as well:

And if we're going to include Mass Effect, then let's not forget the KOTOR series either, which were better games IMO

What about the Front Mission games?

Or Star Ocean?

Or Fire Emblem?

Or any entry in the Tales Series?

What's World of Fuckcraft's storyline? Because from what I can gather, it's basically just a vague rehash of the 3 Warcraft RTS games. I think that if you're into "streamlined combat" like that, RuneScape is the game for you.

Did anyone mention suikoden? I mean, I could not bring myself to finish II, because one of the characters ends up dying, and theres a way to prevent it. SHE MUST LIVE!!!

Oh, and let me rundown stompstomps list, because I can't stand to have another post of a billion pictures.

1.Tales of Symphonia-Is this murdarspeak or something? Have it fun combat means what exactly?
2.Disgaea 2- Your admitting you know jack about it, and that your willing to discount it handily because your ex-girlfriend liked it. Are you projecting negative feelings cause she called your dick small?
3.- Eternal Sonata- So, a xbox 360 is incapable of having a good JRPG? Once again, you fail to note anything about it.
4.Phantom Brave- "I didn't give a game a try because the cover wasn't supercool!"
5.Wild Arms 2-"I'm not willing to give a game a try cause I'm under the belief that a game can't get better in the second incarnation."
6.Xenogears- Okay, so I cant actually fault you much for this. I'm not familiar with the first Xenogears, so I can't say whether or not this is true. But to be fair, Final fantasy is often overrated. Buts its hit enough times that you should'nt throw out the baby with the bathwater.
7. Parasite Eve- Its not that complex, are you retarded?

So, in conclusion, you've all but admitted that your incredibly shallow, and you would prefer that the majority of what makes an RPG worth playing should be ripped out to so you can get your super high level and your big number sword. Pathetic.

Oh, and just FYI, your no memesmith. MAX HOMO will never be popular, its not very clever, and its not well suited to insulting games. Don't try again.

World of Warcraft doesn't even have a story, really. The only dialog options you get are in the form of quest texts, which are pathetic attempts at shoehorning your character into some kind of role for the sake of doing a gay-ass fetch or kill quest. If anything you're supposed to assume the game has a story, I don't think Blizzard feels it's their job to present one in the first place.

The intro movies when you create a character are probably the most pathetic part. I thought there would actually be some kind of movie, like, a cutscene showing some cool stuff, but instead of that, you get a thing that says, "10 YEARS OF WARCRAFT™ BRAND TRADEMARK VIDEO GAME SERIES", and then it flies over the fucking starting area where people named 420BongThugXx are jumping around and lagging out, skipping around like retard fucks while some dumbass talks about fake plot elements that never happened.

Y'see, the plot is, uh, YOU make the plot! Yes, you, the player! Heh heh! Good job Blizzard.

Wild Arms 2 was pretty terrible. The "all my friends turned into monsters, let me react with no emotion as I slay them all on this train" thing was too stiff of a story imo... and then the whole thing of finding towns with sonar or whatever. No thanks.

WA1 I liked, but WA2... sheesh.
