I used to use Aim Adhack until a recent reformat. I no longer trust this client because the uninstaller comes up as a trojan, as does the install package.
Anyone got one without the trojan-ness and all the fun of Aim 5.9 with no ads or bullshit?

What virus scanner do you use, by the way? I use this one called Avast! Anti-Virus, and it updated its virus definitions and then suddenly all these pre-installed HP software packages came up as trojans. It might just be your scanner overreacting if your program hasn't done anything else suspicious.
(I threw them all into the "virus chest" anyway, though, since I don't really like HP anyway and none of the things worked properly because I've ended up deleting important files without knowing where they went to.)
As for me, I still use regular AIM 5.9 (just never updated), but I don't know when the proverbial plug is pulled. On my laptop I have Trillian, but that probably isn't what you're looking for - it's just a stripped-down version of all major chat programs slammed together.

I prefer the SWFA Super Sniper scope, myself.
The best Aiming client I have ever used. You can't miss with this thing.

I had considered it was a false positive, but I dunno. I ran the installer through VirusTotal.com, which scans using a ton of different programs. It came up with 6 positives as some nasty sounding trojan. I suppose it could be a false positive, but it doesn't seem worth the risk.
Regarding Pidgin, I'd use it if it didn't have that annoying tabbed window thing.

you can disable the tabbed IMs feature in pidgin if you like:
tools -> preferences -> interface tab

I decided Pigin is cool.
I have three minor gripes with it:
1. Needs better Direct Connect and File send functionality. It doesn't remember what folder you got shit from last, you can't view with thumbnails (that's the worst of all, basically) and you can't select multiple files or folders to add to a zip and send that instead. Oh, and you can't send files that aren't images or sounds, which is also gay. As far as the file transfer stuff is concerned, it doesn't seem to have auto-accept on file transfers, let alone allow you to set a directory to auto-save them to.
2. Font problems, with the Pidgin fonts being ridiculously huge on normal AIM clients when they look normal on your end.
3. Hitting escape doesn't close chat windows, and hitting Control+I doesn't open up the window for the buddy you have selected. I find hotkey combos much faster than clicking around, but it's minor enough for me not to really give a shit.
Other than that, I like it a lot. Very simple and functional. Oh, and it doesn't make any sketchy bullshit pop up on virus scanners or in HiJackThis.

I agree, the direct connect is not as functional as it could be, but you can turn on auto accept for file transfers:
tools -> plugins -> auto accept and hit configure
there's also a bunch of other nifty plugins in there to play around with, and third party ones available as well from here:

I used to really like trillian, but then it started to crash constantly, so I switched over to pidgin, which is much more stable, faster, doesn't crash when you get YIM offline messages, doesn't lag the entire OS if 5 accounts of yours are signing on at once, doesn't lag at random times and it has a HTML log function.
I really miss the trillian LOL smiley, though...

Yeah, Pidgin's default smileys really suck, I just disabled them. I like seeing the face in text anyway.

I use Trillium and I've never had an issue with it. It runs my MSN, AIM and Yahoo quite seamlessly.

Trillian for me as well. Although I never get on, so it doesn't really matter. I really should get on more often.
