Peter Berg is attached to direct a bigscreen adaptation of Frank Herbert's classic sci-fi novel "Dune" for Paramount Pictures.
Kevin Misher, who spent the past year obtaining the book rights from the Herbert estate, will produce via his Par-based shingle.
Herbert's 1965 novel is a sweeping, futuristic tale set on the remote desert planet Arrakis, which produces the interstellar empire's sole source of the spice Melange -- used for distant space travel. An empirewide power struggle ensues over the control of the spice. Berg would be the latest helmer to take a crack at the property, which spawned a 1984 David Lynch film as well as a 2000 Sci Fi Channel miniseries starring William Hurt.
The project is out to writers, with the producers looking for a faithful adaptation of the Hugo- and Nebula Award-winning book. The filmmakers consider its theme of finite ecological resources particularly timely. |
Guess I'll be applying...

I've already failed faithfulness. My treatment was in the world of Blade Runner with Jihads and commercialization. It was just like Zelda with ray guns.

What? That there's another Dune movie coming when there shouldn't be? And despite my objections I'm still trying to profit off it?

My version of "Dune" is a literal parallel to the Iraq war. Basically, the people of Arrakis are at risk of being cultivated by two big corporations, so they've turned to terrorism setting off bombs on Caladan and Giedi Prime... Or are being accused of being the source of these attacks, although it might be a plot of the universal government. House Atreides is dispatched in force to wipe out the rebels of Arrakis. But Prince Paul Atreides is captured and brainwashed by the rebels, believing he's some prophesied hero of the people, and declares war on his own people and the empire. His delusions eventually get him to betray all of House Atreides and assassinate all the major players in the universe.
So basically, it's just like the David Lynch film but much more in your face about the parallels of real events and more off planet scenes... And no Kyle MacLachlan vs. Sting fight...
Edit: Oh, and I guess Paul is much more of a son of a bitch...

You seem excited. I'm not familier with Dune, so all of this is lost on me.

I'm not though. I like the Lynch version, I couldn't finish the book, and I was bored to tears by the mini-series and have yet to finish it.
If they're going to make another "Dune", why not make it based on one of the sequels? While I'm not completely against remakes, there's some properties I think we can only do so much with. My version is a total F-you to the source material and the fans, but it's different enough that I'd be willing to see it. Chances are Paramount won't even read it.

I'll stick with Lynch's.
It had Sting, Al From Quantum Leap, The Evil Brewmeister from Strange Brew, and Captain Picard in it, what more could you want?
