On the GameFAQs home page, there's a big banner ad that says SMASH IT UP WITH SEGA'S SUPERSTARS!
Sadly, it's for Sega Superstar Tennis.
Sega needs to rip-off Nintendo and make its own Smash game, cuz that shit would sell hardcore. Look at the line-up they have to draw characters from:
Alex Kidd
Golden Axe
Streets of Rage
Sonic the Hedgehog
Ristar
Comix Zone
Altered Beast
Super Monkey Ball
Shenmue
Virtua Fighter
House of the Dead
Space Channel 5
Moonwalker (!!!)
Billy Hatcher
Shinobi
The characters from these games might not all be as well-known as Mario, Link, and Samus, but they would make a damn fun game. Plus it's just the sort of gimmicky shit that Sega needs to revive their brand.

Sega did this before Smash Bros was even a twinkle in Nintendo's eye. Remember Fighters Megamix? They even tossed the car from Daytona in as a fighter. :p
I think a new version would be a cool idea, provided it wasn't focused mainly on Sonic characters.
