I'll agree that it is overrated. But I do think it is a really good movie. I thought it was done well. The simple plot you described really isn't what matters. What matters is how it is put together. I mean look at Napoleon Dynamite. Not a lot going on there. But Jared Hess took his short Peluca and turned it into an instant cult classic that had quite a bit of mainstream success.

The first time I ever saw Napoleon Dynamite, I started laughing almost immediately and didn't stop until after it was over. I was almost laughing the whole way through. It still does that to me. Its something about the subtleness of the comedy that makes it extra funny for me.

On the other hand, I can completely understand why somebody wouldn't like it. Its kind of an acquired taste. And I think a lot of people were making a big deal about it only because everyone else was. So it almost became a fad at one time. Like it was cool to quote it. But I'm not sure everyone running around pretending it was the best movie ever really even liked it, if that makes any sense.

I agree to an extent. It was by no means awful. And I don't know if I would call it great because its not really my kind of movie. But I think it was still pretty good. I think DiCaprio does a helluva job. While I haven't liked everything he has done, I think he is a solid actor. That said, I don't think anybody else could have pulled it off the way he did.

I guess my point is a lot of people act like the plot goes: rich girl falls in love with scumbag, the boat sinks, the end. But if three different companies put out the exact same movie, I think it would be much easier to see how good it is. Because its not like you could have plugged in any actors, director, producer, crew and cast and end up with just as good of a movie. Its not so much the basic plot itself as the way they go about it. This includes writing, directing, acting, props, the set, the score, etc. I think this is what makes it stand out.
