I have not played many Zelda games 100% through. Only a hand full. Lttp, Links Awakening, and Ocarina. I have played bits and pieces of the original and those twin ones for game boy color.

Now my question is do you guys is do you guys believe in one continuous story line? Everywhere i read i see these time lines that try to explain how every game fits into some sort of big story and honestly that makes no sense to me unless he is given amnesia at the end of every episode. I can understand how Majora takes place in the same universe as ocarina but the others don't make any sense to me. He has to relearn about the master sword, meet and save Zelda over again etc etc.

I don't believe the whole series has one timeline.

Ocarina of Time > Majora's Mask > Seasons & Ages > Twilight Princess
Windwaker > Phantom Hourglass
Link's Awakening > A Link to the Past
Wands of Gamelon Rolling Eyes

I don't know where Minish Cap would fit since I have not heard much about it.

I thought it was pretty well established that none of them had a god damn thing to do with one another.

Zelda II is indeed a sequel to the original game.

After that, it gets confusing. Majora's Mask may or may not be in same continuity as Ocarina and everything else just hurts my brain when I try and think about it.

With Wind Waker, they confirmed that there had been at least two different Links in the current continuity and that would be infinite. The story goes that every so often a great evil (Ganon/Ganondorf) will be reborn and then the Hero of Time (Link) will be reborn to defeat him. Wind Waker was the first game where they said this, so I don't know if/how they've retconned the relationships between the other games.

I just think of the series as a collection of "Legends" of Zelda. It's like a story passed down from one generation to another. There are certain details that are almost always present, i.e. Link, Zelda, Ganon(dorf), the Triforce, the Master Sword, etc. There are some details that are a little fuzzier (for example, is Ganon weak to Silver Arrows or Light Arrows?). There are some details that are just unique altogether, dependent upon the personal tastes or experiences of the particular "storyteller." Certain games definitely build upon others in the series, and can be seen as prequels or sequels without too much trouble, but there are too many continuity problems between the few readily apparent "blocks" of legends to make a coherent timeline possible, even if you want to bring alternate timelines into the mix (Crisis on Infinite Hyrules?).

Now that's an awesome theory. I'm going with that one.

And Minish Cap didn't really fit into any of them if I remember correctly. It was kind of like a side story.

Well, they explicutly stated that Phantom Hourglass takes place 4 years after Wind Waker, so that's for sure.

Some theorists claim Minish Cap is the first, since Link starts with a green tunic, but no trademark sock-hat like every other one of them.

We're ALL in agreement? I dunno, I like the AVGN. Or am I not supposed to?

Back to the Zelda topic, I think it can go either way on how they're all connected. Some have connections to each other (Link to the Past - Zelda 1 - Zelda 2; Ocarina - Majora; Minish Cap - Four Swords - Four Swords Adventures), but all in all they can really all just be "legends" and not have, as Murdar put it, one goddamn thing to do with each other.

I think a lot of AVGN's videos are pretty good. Some of his newer ones though not so much. The Zelda chronology one was good though.

Also Ashens is the fucking man.

If anyone feels the need to discuss AVGN or whoever, check out this thread.

Anyway, back to Zelda, I used to obsess over the timeline. In my nerdier days (*cough*sophomoreyearofhighschool*cough*), I tried to figure it out for a fanfic piece. That was long before we got all these new games that have obliterated whatever timeline could've existed. Now, I try not to think about it...

And if anyone wondered what happened to that fanfic (yeah right), I'd keep my eye out for the full length DICKIE script... Rolling Eyes

Huh, it seems my comment on the Zelda cartoon in the "Video Game Reviewers" Thread is totally out of place... ah well, back on topic:

I thought that Link's Awakening was the sequel to ink to the Past?? Has it ever even been firmly established that Link's Awakening is a direct sequel to Link to the Past? I always just assumed it was...

Okay, because it wasn't a smooth split here's the reasoning:

The tangent into AVGN and other reviews began with Bluey's post. However, his post was still on topic. I'm not able to clone his post so that the first half gets moved to the new thread while the second half stays here, so the entire post is left in this thread.

Smurfsrdead's post started to veer away from the main thread, with only the mention of the cartoon keeping it on topic (see above issue). This will be rectified in a moment. However, it was a good post to split, because he quoted Bluey's post which automatically brought it into the new thread.

Chrisby's post was kept in this thread because it mentioned the AVGN's Zelda video which keeps it fairly on topic. It was also maintains some sense of continuity between the posts.

I know that wasn't a smooth edit at all, but I felt the split was needed. Posts may still be juggled in order to get more clear, coherent threads. Hopefully, that explains some method to the madness.

Now, one last clean up:

Smurfsrdead wrote:
Speaking of Zelda continuity, how does The Legend of Zelda cartoon fit in? Was the cartoon the first time anyone saw the "King of Hyrule"?
EXCUUUUUSE ME PRINCESS!

I've accepted the fact that it doesn't. It's like trying to put the Resident Evil flicks or the Silent Hill movie in the continuity of the video games. Hell, it's even like trying to explain how "Superman Returns" followed the first two films. Rolling Eyes

Well, the Minish Cap has Vaati in it, so I assume it's a prequel to the Four Swords Saga. That and you actually yield the Legendary Four Sword near the end.

Edit: Wikipedia has an article on Vaati that explains what I mean.

The BS games were online games and were only released in Japan, so no one here has played them. I was aware of them however. As the article mentions, due to the nature of the games, they can't be properly emulated. If Nintendo was smart, they'd create a server that reruns the broadcasts on endless loop and put these games on the Virtual Console. Of course, Nintendo isn't that smart. It's kind of sad that Nintendo hasn't had a decent online strategy since the 16-bit era.

I thought BS Zelda was quests 3 and 4 from the nes version along with better graphics.

Not quite. Read the article more carefully.

While BS Zelda is essentially the original LoZ with improved graphics and different maps, it was played using the Super Famicom's online peripheral, the Satellaview and it was played in real-time. The two quests were each split into four episodes and you had a week to complete each episode.

The original ROM has since been hacked and you can now play it as though it were just an improved version of Zelda, but that's far less cool than the original concept.

There was also a BS version of LTTP: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BS_Zelda_no_Densetsu_Kodai_no_Sekiban

If you want to know how the zelda time line goes I'm not sure, but I can show you which games are most likely connected:
Zelda the 1st one is connected to the second; which may or may not be connected to LTTP; LTTP is connected to 4SA, which is the sequel to 4S. Minish Cap is before 4S and shows how Vaati got his powers. Link`s Awakening is probably connected to LTTP somehow, OoT is connected to OoA&OoS & Majora`s Mask because Impa is in Seasons and Ages. In Majora`s Mask you RE learn the song of time. Now Windwaker is suppose to be set 100-1000yrs ahead of OoT. PHG is 4yrs after Windwaker. As for Twilight Princess I don`t know if it is connected in some way.
This is how I believe the time line goes in the sense of order not actually chronologically

Laminated Sky, that's a pretty good summary of the various groups of related Zelda games spanning the series, but the Oracle games are not necessarily related at all to OoT and MM. Impa is a character that recurs throughout the series, so her presence in a game tells you about as much as would Link's, Zelda's, and/or Ganon's presences. Although not seen in game, Impa is specifically mentioned in the instruction manuals for the original Legend of Zelda and Zelda II as helping those stories' incarnation of Link begin his quest.

Well the only thing all Zelda games actually have in common is your always some incarnation of Link. Even Zelda and Gannon(dorf) aren't in every Zelda game (which is weird as far a Zelda goes she is the game's name).

Most of the Zelda games over the years have had the Triforce but I don't think they all did. Some games even have Faroe, Din. & Nayru which are suppose to be incarnations of the Triforce Faroe=Courage Din=Power Nayru=Wisdom.

I think a Zelda game where Link's main weapons aren't a shield and sword would be awesome like give him an ax or a shotgun. Very Happy
