I seriously can't beat this game. I can make it to level four on easy by sacrificing a couple continues, but then I usually give up by the boss there because I have no idea what to do (and then when I have to continue I go all the way back to that crazy latch-onto-hooks jumping puzzle)...
I got it way back for Christmas, but I haven't picked it up again lately (as you can see by my little XFire banner, I've been doing a lot of PC gaming). I need to again... I need to beat this game, to prove myself. I WILL NOT BE BEATEN BY THIS BRIGHT BLUE DS

Huh? Contra 4 is hard, but I still managed to beat it on hard mode the other day, I like how they used a remix of the original first level theme from Contra 1 specifically for hard mode. Contra 4 was hard, but I don't feel it was nearly as hard as Shattered Soldier or Hard Corps. Hell, I'm not quite sure this one was as hard as Contra 3 on hard mode. It takes some time and practice to get used to the dual-screens, but once you got all the level and boss patterns memorized the game becomes much more doable.
Doing all 40 challenges is definitely worth the effort, or at least 36 to unlock "Jimbo" and "Sully" from Contra 3.

"LET'S ATTACK AGGRESSIVELY!"
The guy who did all the voice acting for Contra 4 is awesome. He's also a VG remixer and did a phenomenal 13+ minute remix of Wizards and Warriors.
Also, I suck at this game too.

Yeah, this game kicks my ass.
And Smurfsrdead, you're either lying your ass off or you're some kind of Contra god. I can get farther on Hard Corps than I can on Contra 4 any day.

I think it's because I've never really played a Contra game. I've played the first level or so of Contra 1 at my cousin's house way back when and didn't have any idea what I was playing, and I've played Contra Hard Corps on a Genesis emulator for about half an hour, but that's it.
Also it's because my reflexes are terrible. Sometimes I will jump right into enemy bullets. I'm... I'm not good.

Hard Corps is probably the Contra game I've played the least of, I never really managed to memorize the boss patterns and I always choose Sheena instead of Browny.
Anyway, Once you get Black Viper's pattern down he becomes a joke, nothing compared to the Red Falcon brain battle in Contra 3 on hard.
But really, I've completely given up on getting an overall S rank for Shattered Soldier, too bad that game doesn't get the respect it deserves.

The thing with Contra 4 is that the boss battles are retardedly easy if you have the Heatseeker. If you get stuck with the basic gun, some of the later ones are a bitch.

The heat seeker is great, but I usually can't hold on to any weapon long enough to get serious use out of it.

Since I'm posting now, I would like to say that I finally beat this game on hard mode a few days ago.

The Heatseeker is really good for the pseudo-3d base levels, since you can pretty much lay down and fire for every screen. But if you want to obliterate bosses REALLY fast, make sure you use a fully upgraded Crush... seriously, Black Viper takes like a minute to destroy with Crush.
BTW - everyone should remember that the original konami code works when you pause the game and enter it in, but instead of giving you lives it fully upgrades your weapons, keep in mind you can only use it 1 per level!

Since Contra 4 has that dual-weapon system thingy, I usually keep one slot that has something I really like (spread-shot, heatseeker) and the other slot can be a backup, something that I'd give up if I have to. If I see a situation in which I don't think I can escape, or if I just panic, I switch to the throw-away weapon in case I die, in which case I'll lose THAT, and still have that nice weapon in my pack.
Of course, this is on easy. On Normal and Hard it might just take both your weapons or something.

That reminds me, I've been curious if you get penalized for doing that, like how in Vectorman if you use cheats it won't give you the proper ending. Anyone know if that happens in Contra 4?

Nope, you don't get penalized whatsoever, also you get a slightly different ending if you finish the game on hard in comparison to normal, so its kinda worth the effort! Like I said, the thing is you can only use the konami code once per level, so for example: if you use it once to upgrade your basic spread and basic crush (upgrades weapons in both slots), and then you die, and pick up a basic heatseeker and try to use the konami code again, you'll lose a life (the game will just kill you for trying to use the code twice in the same level). You can however, use it in the same level if you lose all your lives and then continue in the same level.
Kinda like trying to use IDDQD in Heretic.

I really hope Konami releases Contra 4 in the UK - I'd rather not import it from the US.
I'd love to pick it up. Operation C and III are kickass games, so I'm hoping 4 continues that legacy.

Are you guys allowed to play Contra games over there yet? I know you guys got the edited Probotectors versions of the early ones because of violence issues...
Also, I like how the game uses PocketNES for its emulation.

I feel the same way. They censored C&C Generals in Germany the same way, by replacing the soldiers and generals with cyborgs and robots. (citing source: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NRMqonctTtQ ) But I'm personally more freaked out by the cyborgs than I am of the actual war theme.
(What's really inexplicable, though, is that some of the characters are cyborgs now, and yet they still have beards.)

Fuck the Rematch 2 challenge. I suck at that style boss and it pissed me off that unlike other rematches, I have to fight guys before the boss.
