True, but it's not the live action movie voice cast and if it were anyone else at the helm, it would be straight to DVD without theatrical release. |
Please excuse my snobbish L.A. speak (trust me, I am well aware I'm becoming even more of an asshole - assholes anonymous HELP ME please!), but why the fuck should that matter? "If anyone else was at helm"? Lucas deserves what he has and anything he can do to get his work/material out there is well within his right. You don't think DarkMaze would release a Press Start Bonus Levels Movie if he had Lucas' resources? Any filmmaker would. It's what filmmakers do. It's a business and distribution is a major part of it. It's like saying if "Lost" were made by anyone else other than ABC it wouldn't be on the air...
No, better yet, the "Lost" game, for example, only has a handful of voices of the original actors from the show, but it's still a licensed "Lost" product which a ton of quality went into. Will it be on par as the show's quality, no, but it will still be a major release. It gives fans what they want and considering that other franchises aren't as lucky to be able to come out with expansions like "Star Wars" or "Lost", I think we're pretty damn lucky. And it isn't like "Star Wars" doesn't deserve it.
I think what you're saying is this release isn't special because it wouldn't be special if it were an animated- uh, "Heroes" movie because it would most likely go straight to DVD. I disagree, because this imaginary "Heroes" example DVD would not have in its budget the ability to be released theatrically. But you don't think Tim Kring would want to give it a theatrical release? Of course he would! Now, George Lucas has the money because Lucas is a fucking brilliant businessman and created a company that makes money - money that can make this release extra special by giving it a theatrical release. It's his business and they are doing what is smart. "Star Wars" is a top brand, people want it, LucasFilm has it, and they'll release it in a way that's most profitable to them. It's just like any other business. The fact that LucasFilm even cares enough to put it out in theaters to me shows that they do care, which I understand is hard for people to accept. Because of this unusual theatrical presentation, it makes it pretty damn special.
Need I mention the Hannah Montana movie/concert thingy that was #1 at the box office two weeks ago?
In fact, out of evil corporations and shitty business decisions that screw the little man, this is far from it. Sure, maybe a smaller indie movie can't get a limited release because "Star Wars" is coming out that weekend, but we're not talking about an actual attack against independent films (especially when I think this film will constitute an independent film). Know what I think is evil? Mircosoft buying Yahoo! That's a little more evil in my book of corporate crime. Why? Because we all know Yahoo!'s staff is FUCKED. Once Microsoft acquires the company, most everyone (if not everyone) will be pink slipped. That's why we see Yahoo! struggling to keep this buy out from happening. --- BTW, this part of my rant is based on a newspaper article, so this opinion is definitely biased and may be ill-informed, but to me, logically, it made sense.
Back to my main point, Hollywood is not like high school where the rich kid's parents pay for a kick ass Homecoming Float that trumps the other kids' floats in the Float Contest. Hollywood is real business and this kind of game plan goes.
All that rant aside, I really wish there was a Press Start Bonus Levels Animated Movie, cause that would kick ass.
(This rant was brewing in me all day and not directly directed at you Black Zarak. I pretty much used you as a face to post this rant too. If you didn't want to be society's avatar, I apologize).
EDIT: Alright, I already foresee this post giving me grief. What do I mean it wasn't directly directed at Black Zarak when I very clearly quoted him? Only part of this post is actually in response to what he typed, which was pretty much that I disagree. I however went into a rant BZ did not bring up, essentially putting words in his mouth. BZ did not say the majority of what I'm addressing. My rant is really a response to what I've heard from some of my other peers. And feel free to disagree too. Free country.
