A seal copy of Earthbound with all the extras would go for more than a seal copy of Chrono Trigger. Seriously though, did that guy an extra decimal place or what?
Ogre Battle probably would as well, due to its limited pressing.

I still remember how pissed I was when FF3 (now 6) first hit the US. Yeah and it was $80. I could not afford that at 14 years old. Those bastards. I can't believe it would not be the highest if still in box.

Cause they made a lot more FF3 snes games than they did Ogre Battle and Earthbound combined. And then you have the fact that Earthbound has a more loyal and dedicated following. Earthbound sealed would be at least 1500+.

Not to mention that Earthbound has never been reprinted. FF6 got a GBA release and I believe it was on a Playstation collection as well.

Yeah but even with the reprints the die hards would still pay the big bucks for the original snes cart unopened. Yeah so far i have all three FF6 versions.
Even if Earthbound was re released it would still cost more than my tri monthly salary. That game had way too much going for it.
BTW i dunno if any exist anymore. Would be pretty nice to see one.

Earthbound sealed should be easy to find, given that it was on clearance racks shortly after its release. I remember routinely seeing it for $19 at many places.

Yes, but because of its massive failure it never got the Player's Choice treatment and was never reprinted. Also, the fact that it didn't sell well increases its current day rarity. Copies that weren't sold (and some copies that were) were eventually thrown out. Add to that the fact that the cart is fairly high demand among collectors and you have a game that could go for quite a bit of money if it was factory sealed.

Well, what do you THINK happens to unsold games? They pass from flea market to flea market until they end up on eBay? It would be nice, but it's improbable. The truth is old games eventually get thrown out. Not just ones in private collections either. Once something's sat in warehouse long enough, someone throws it out. That's just what happens. So unless you can find me ten factory sealed copies of Mystery Quest, I don't know what to tell you.

It's hard to say which game would be the most valuable in Sealed New condition. Current average used prices for Cartridge only copies are:
Chrono Trigger - $40
Earth Bound - $30-$40
Ogre Battle - $25

Uh, they get liquidated? Have you ever dealt with retail before? E.T. 2600 is an extreme example of business gone wrong, but that's not a common business practice.

I realize this, but a game can only be liquidated so many times before someone just says fuck it and throws it out. SNES games were not in huge demand between 1997-2004 and they were hard to move. Eventually a lot of the ones that were previously unsold ended up at secondhand dealers like FuncoLand and flea markets. And since FuncoLand tested all its secondhand games, it was virtually impossible to get a factory sealed NES or SNES game from them. And then, some places just through them in clearance bins and sold them to consumers, who undoubtedly opened them. In fact, because of this, unpopular games are even harder to find factory sealed. They keep getting marked down until someone buys them, whereas popular games get multiple print runs and often end up being overproduced. Take Yoshi's Story, for example. It was 49.99 when it came out, it got critically panned, and it was 19.99 at EB about a month of after its release. Hell, even I bought it at $20, because, what the fuck, you know?

I know the overproduced thing really held true in the N64 days.
The games came out new for $60+, but towards the end of its life cycle I was seeing games like Conker's and Perfect Dark in bargin bins for $9.99 or less.

I actually lucked out once and had a store close before I had to return my game rental. The same thing happenned to a friend of mine with the copy of Super Double Dragon he rented from Blockbuster.

I'm sure a lot of BB employees took free games home. I can't imagine throwing something away that carries some value to it.
I'll buy the idea of sealed games being scarce due to passing through enough hands that someone finally opens it, but not the idea that some insane number of sealed copies of one title got purposely trashed before its resell value was reduced to zero.
