I havent played SMB in forever so im at a loss as to what you guys are talking about.

In SMB, there are several beanstalks hidden in bricks throughout the game. The most famous one is hidden in 4-2 and leads to the second Warp Zone.
Every other beanstalk in the game leads to a secret coin area where you jump onto a moving cloud platform and attempt to grab coins as you float past. The coin areas always end with a giant pit that leads back to the main level with three coins floating directly above it. Like so:
