Well, that sucked.

I don't actually give a shit about sports, by and large, but I'm a weirdly obsessive Pats fan (and this goes back to before anyone even knew about Tom Brady, so don't cry "fairweather"... My dad took me to see them back when winning 2 games was a huge deal). This Super Bowl, then, was just... yeah.

First, congratulations to any Giants fans out there. That final TD Pass is going to be in highlight reels for generations. I still don't get how the hell Manning got ut of that clusterfuck.

Now, in general... what the hell? Both offenses played like shit for three and a half quarters (seriously, that third quarter was some of the worst all around football I've ever seen). Then Brady remembered "oh yeah, I'm Tom Brady", did his last minute march down the field thing, and was getting ready to go home and bang Gisele. Of course, then Eli had to remember that Mannings other than Peyton can avoid sucking and return the favor... Just, wow.

Bill, Bill... GO FOR IT on 4th and 13th on the 31? *Really?* Seeing as we lost by 3, that call is going to haunt fans for a long time.

Other things I wasn't a fan of... 1) Opening our first drive with a trick play. That smacked of the Pats trying too hard to be clever. When they do that, things usually go downhill fast, 2) Maroney had some okay early carries, then we basically abandoned the running game, despite Brady taking more shots than 50 Cent on his grandma's front porch, 3) Guys, next time, before you leave the send-off rally in Foxboro, make sure you pack your Offensive Line on the bus, too. You might have to leave a laptop or something at home but, trust me, it's worth it.

This is how sports cycles work, I guess. You go from being a scrappy underdog, to slowly gaining huge momentum and acclaim, to ultimately being seen as a domineering evil empire, and then the next scrappy underdog steals the spotlight, even if temporarily.

Fan observations:

1) NE fans (true). It's a just a game. Yes, it sucks that we lost, given what was at stake, but the Patriots will line up in formation again this summer. Maybe my not being a huge sports fan otherwise offers me a chance to see this more objectively? I dunno. But I'm not that crushed. Again, it sucks, but they're still my favorite team and the fact that they "only" went 18-1, broke assloads of NFL records, and lost in the final minutes of the Super Bowl isn't going to change that.

2) NE fans (bandwagon). Good riddance. I never understood the point of Pink form-fitting Tom Brady jerseys anyway. Girls look way hotter in real ones. This is part of the fandom experience... teams lose.

3) NE fan haters. I'm mixed on what to say to you. On the one hand, I understand why you hate the Pats. They've been hugely successful, Belichick is in no way media-friendly, it's almost unfair how things work out for them, the fans can be obnoxious as shit, and people generally hate when teams with huge, established success try to play the underdog angle. On the other hand, you all took the videotaping thing and RAN with it. You KNOW it's common practice in the league. The only difference is the Pats got caught and that gives you ammo to act like *insert team here* would NEVER do such a thing. There's a reason Mangini got blacklisted after the initial Spygate uproar -- coaches don't turn in their own, AND he shed a lot of light on something everyone basically took advantage of. What really blew my mind was when some folks in sports forums (and, dear god, if there's one thing I've learned in the past few years, it's that sports forums make the Something Awful forums look like a glorious mythical realm where gorgeous naked vixens feed you the fruit of your choice while Nintendo gets "Smash Brothers Brawl" out in February) attacked the Pats for Spygate but said Michael Vick was being treated unfairly. Uh... videotaping signals and, uh, murdering living things are not in the same league... at all... in any feasible way... no matter how you try to spin in... and no matter how drunk you get the person you're arguing with.

I think I've said enough. Anyway, again, congrats to the Giants fans out there and, well, sorry to everybody because the Pats were pissed about losing the AFC Championship game to a highly-touted rival and they channeled that into an 18-1 season. Lord only knows what losing the Super Bowl to a serious underdog is going to bring out of them next season. Very Happy

Actually.. are there any explicit rules stating that players MUST be human? Because if not, I offer that the Kraft family is probably right now buying assloads of amber to mine for mosquitos so they can harvest DNA from the blood they've sucked to create a new defensive package consisting solely of cloned velociraptors.

That was one of the best Super Bowls ever, an arguably the best upset ever - yes, it's probably better than Super Bowl III because of what was at stake for the Pats.

Man, I wish they could have given the MVP award to the Giants' Defensive Line. They were the difference makers. The Pats' O-Line had been an impenetrable wall all year, giving Brady a great comfort zone for his 50 TDs, but when they crumbled, he felt that pressure and was brought down consistently.

I have to wonder though....Brady's ankle seemed to be a factor. His aim on the long ball was way off...

Greeney for me its not about the cheating its the entire way the franchise handles itself.

Back when the Eagles played the Pats in the superbowl the pats kept mocking the Eagles wing flap whenever they scored. WTF. Thats an old eagle tradition. Sorta like the Packers leap into the stands? Do you really need to mock your opponent ingame? Also last years charger game. Does your team really need to do the lights out dance? Onto this years popcorn thing. As an eagles fan i hate T.O. The guy is a douche but the Pats had to sink to his level with the popcorn thing.

Now about spygate. I am well aware of the NFL and the cheating. I am from arizona and have been all my life. Dear god i wish the Cards would cheat more!. Maybe we would make the playoffs. Its not that the patriots cheated. The league sent the patriots a memo before the season even started. If my team had that kinda heat id lay low for a bit even if it is common practice. But nope. Not the Patriots. This years Pats had unbelievable talent. Why would they even need to video tape if they were so dam good. And i know it was early in the season but come on. You have the Bills Jets and Dolphins in your division and you picked up Seau ad Moss. No way in hell are you not going to the playoffs. It really was a slap in teh face to the rest of the league.

I dunno about the pats oline. A few teams really got to brady at times. The eagles giants ravens and colts got pretty close.

I don't understand why people are so high on the Giants. I mean, like the Patriots or not, they almost did something that no one else has every done: played a perfect 19-0 season. The Giants' only accomplishment was thwarting that record. And that's far less spectular. I mean, who would you rather be, Neil Armstrong, the first man on the moon, or some cockfaced douchebag who blew up the Apollo 11 and prevented Neil Armstrong from walking on the moon?

The fact that there was a record that COULD'VE been created here far outweighs who was doing it. Hell, if it had been any other team, I would have wanted to see go 19-0 just as much as I wanted to see the Pats do it. But I doubt we'll see anyone come close to that ever again.

What pisses me off the most is that The Giants were exceptionally lucky. They had no business beating the Cowboys, and they certainly had no business beating Green Bay. Hell, after two blown field goal attempts in a row, the Giants didn't DESERVE to beat Green Bay. Their season should have ended with a red-faced Tom Coughlin, drunk as any other Irishman and twice angry, yelling at his kicker about how he was a piece of shit and should die. And yet, it didn't. The game was fucking over. It was overtime, Green Bay had the ball, and they were just outside of field goal range. Then the Giants pulled a lucky interception out of their ass, and got close enough for their won winning field goal, which their kicker finally made. There was certainly skill in the Giants line-up, but their three last wins were equal parts skill and luck. There were plenty of opportunities where if someone had caught a ball they dropped, the Giants would have lost. This is a team that won the Superbowl largely by chance, or perhaps as the deliberate manufactured decision of some shadowy Illuminati-type organization.

Yesterday was a great day for Giants fans, but it was a terrible day for sports fans and for dreamers. The impossible really is impossible. No team will ever go undefeated in the modern NFL.

The giants are in the same division as the eagles so i don't like them. Its just i did not want to see the patriots win. I just don't think they deserve it. And to be honest i wish i did think they deserved it. I really would like to see a team go 19 and 0 but the patriots shot themselves on the foot. Me and my dad have always talked about wanted a team to go 19 and 0. But i lost respect for the Pats long ago. Even if the Patriots lost a few reg season games i still would have rooted against them. If anything you really can blame the head coach. Im not even against all those big marquee teams that win all the time. I have rooted for the Yankees the Redwings the Red Sox the Lakers etc etc so its not that whole hate the big guy complex at all. Its just the Patriots never show anyone respect. You can use that whole spygate thing as they wanted to prove they can win but they really didn't show people respect before that either.
But then again how much was luck that the pats beat the last few games of their schedule.

Like it or not, but many sportscasters have already said, and I agree with them, that this is a greater story than the Pats going undefeated. You have the Giants, who started 0-2 and no one expected to do anything, recovering, and then in a game that didn't matter to them, gave the Pats a hard time to get to their perfect record in Week 17. Then they ride that confidence booster all the way in the playoffs up to a rematch in the Super Bowl and come out on top this time, defeating the apparant team of destiny. It's like a freakin' movie.

I call B.S. Luck had little to do with any of their playoff victories. They simply outplayed all of their opponents and deserve to be Champions. The Cowboys played like crap, and Brett Favre looked like an old man shivering in the cold. Meanwhile, the Pats explosive offense was deflated as Brady couldn't throw the long ball and the Giants' defense knocked him on his ass all day long. The team that scored no less than 20 pts in any game all season couldn't manage more than 14 pts in the only game that truly mattered. Pathetic. They were off their game while the Giants were at the top of theirs. It's a hard pill to swallow, but Pats fans have to deal with it. The Giants outplayed them, and are now the champs for the next year. Good luck next year to Boston fans, but let the Giants enjoy this one. They deserve it.

I loved how everyone thought the Pats were gonna win. Their perfect 18-0 season? In the fuckin' trash!

I had people screaming and running down my street going all GIANTS WON WOOT the second the game was over. I smiled.

Also, Strahan sacked Brady with the fury.

No, it's funny because you listed the Red Sox as a team that "wins all the time".

You know they went 86 years without winning the World Series, right?

Oh i know. But i sorta lumped them into the big marquee teams. The ones people consider evil. Right now if you read alot of sports related forums and such they are the new evil big money spending machine like the yankees were a few years ago. But you gotta admit the past 7 years they have been quite good no?

Well, I personally dont like the Patriots because of the whole 'tuck rule' incident from several years ago. I happen to be a Raider fan (yeah yeah I know) so im still upset about that.

Another reason I dont like the Patriots: their fans. I hate these god damn band wagon fans who wear their jersey as though they have always been good. I have this friend who lived in Boston for about 2 years so he claims to be a hardcore fan, so come game day, he would come over w/his Patriots jersey and have this smug smile on his face throughout the whole season, while my team struggled sucking ass. So, that, coupled w/the fact that they were winning every god damn game thru-out the season, just made me an angry bitter anti-fan of the patriots.

Suffice it to say, I hate the cowboys but the patriots were the only team that would make me root for the cowboys.

I root for the Giants because I spent the first five years of my life commuting with my family between New York and Pittsburgh because both my parents wanted me to see their families. Now, had it been Packers-Patriots, I would've been for the Pats because I'm from Connecticut.
