Enter SAW -- a videogame based off the popular series of hyperviolent horror/suspense movies. Announced today, the new title is under development at Brash Entertainment in association with both Lions Gate Films and Twisted Pictures, with creative input from SAW series creators Leigh Whannell and James Wan.
A short press release from Brash declares that the title will "pull no punches" delivering "the horrifying suspense and disbelief that has floored fans worldwide!" It also mentions that SAW will be built using the Unreal 3 engine and is currently in development for next-gen platforms only.
A small website promoting the game is currently up at www.whoisjigsaw.com -- though sadly it seems to largely consist of a news signup form and some rotating images right now.
Considering that the SAW franchise in general has successfully carved out a (particularly bloody) niche in the world of established horror with $500 million in sales and 15 million DVDs sold to date, there's every reason to believe that a well-executed game based on the same proposition could find some resonance in gaming's survival horror canon. Naturally, the absence of Wii controls seems a rather glaring omission in a title like SAW, but considering how bungled the application of a similar concept (not to mention the ensuing media frenzy) was in Manhunt 2, it's probably for the best.
We're sure the Parents Television Council will have plenty to say about this one -- though as we all know, baroque first person interactive jaw breaking contraptions must necessarily take a back seat to tastefully presented sex when it comes to the world of real media controversy. |

I LOVE Saw, but I have no idea how it would work as a game. I don't think it'll be able to transfer.

The game will probably like The Thing and involve you and a bunch of other people trying to survive a house full of Jigaw's traps. Like The Thing, it will probably be heavily scripted, making most of your choices pointless and destroying the game's replayability.

The fact that they have to explicitly say that it's okay to use it as a noun makes me wonder how prevelant the belief is that it is not a noun.
