They were great, tons of old cartridge games for ever console you could think of, lots of variety. Then Gamestop bought them Mad Now I like new games too, I've owned a PS2 and an Xbox and a Gamecube, but when Gamestop took over they got rid of all the old SNES NES Sega etc carts and any related items. The only place I can actually go and buy Honest to god Nintendo cartridges is this one little shady corner shop located in the B&I (if you dont live in the same state / city as me imagine if flea market and a swap meet fucked inside a strip mall, that's the B & I )

The guy that runs this shop knows the value of oh lets say Chrono Trigger or Mario RPG, and his prices are set accordingly. I walked in there one day and saw Super Metroid. He must have saw the hope in my eyes, he wanted 100$ for it. I have the rom but thats not the same. Sad

Anybody else been through this or is just me?

Funcoland was pretty crappy no matter if it was called Gamestop or not. Their prices for games always sucked. Back in the day they might buy SMB3 from you for 5 bucks, but then they would turn around and sell it to someone else for forty. Their used sales got them anywhere from 100% to 5000% profit on every sale. It was sick.

Yeah but they actually had it in stock!

I don't know about where you're at but here in WA nobody has old NES \ SNES carts for sale besides that price gouging jerk. Mad

Yeah, I remember FuncoLand. I remember their crappy service, return policy, ever-changing prices, and rude workers. There came a point where I wouldn't play the demo games that were out because of the dirty looks you'd get from the dude behind the counter. It was nice to play the games before you bought them though. Overall, funcoland was cool back in the day.

Yes, I do. You could buy good games for a good price. It was the best thing to happen to any retro gamer next to Virtual Console. Very Happy

I've never been to a Funcoland, but from what I'm hearing it sounds like Game XChange around here.

I remember there being a Funcoland in Tucson awhile back. I always went to Bookman's though. Man, that place was the shit, they sold used books, records, tapes, games, toys. Fuck man, I miss it there. They had NES, SNES, and all that good stuff too.

I remember Funcoland had this big price printout of what they purchase/sell games at. We used to get the updated ones everyweek.

Also remember when Babbages used to run ads in video game magazines? It was sorta similar but Ogre Battle was always like 70 bucks.

They never had a Funcoland where I live either. I always went to Game XChange, GameCo, or Vintage Stock. Vintage Stock bought out this place called the Book Barn. It was a great place to go. They sold books, music, toys, games, comics, sports cards, and pretty much anything collectible. They had people that were allegedly experts for each "category". So even if a game was rare and usually outragous, you could negotiate with him. Same when selling something. At Game Xchange, and most of the places like GameStop, they have a listing of how much they can give you and how much to sell it for. They won't let you talk them down.

I've found a lot of things at random pawn shops. A few years ago, I found a Genesis, Sega CD, 32X extra controllers and a few games for the CD and 32X. The guy had been sitting on them for a while and gave it all to me for dirt cheap.

FuncoLand was ridiculous. Their prices were generally based on what they thought they could get for it, not what the cartridge was actually worth. I remember I went in there one time and they wanted $20 for Zelda II. Nintendo made a shitload of copies of Zelda II, but since it had the Zelda name on it and it was an ULTRA RARE GOLD CARTRIDGE, FuckNoLand decided to charge $20 for it. Some of their prices were reasonable though. They had Dragon Warrior IV for $40, which is the low end of what it goes for on eBay these days and they'd sell you SMB1 for $1.

I have the supposed "rare" gold Zelda II cartridge, and I just checked Ebay, and considering that it goes for about 10 bucks at most, it's safe to say that Funco Land was filled with a bunch of morons.

I remember that stupid price guide thing too.

At one point we spent like 10 bucks and got over 20 copies of SMB1. We made houses out of them or destroyed them or something.

Working at FuncoLand was my actual first retail job, the discount was lame but my boss would let us "borrow" the new games and a used system so we could know what we were talking about. We used to get free issues of Game Informer and we were told to whore out the Cleaners. Gamestop came in took away our commission and the try it before you buy it stations. The prices in general were good, there were a couple flukes like DBZ for playstation running $149.99.
and Cattivo that is the norm for used sales. Depending on the stock of the item they might take it for less and sell it at normal price but giving $5 and selling for $40, never saw anything like that. I put together a database of Gamestops games and prices and they make an average of atleast 300% profit on used games. Well back to my hole I go.

I have both The Legend of Zelda and the Adventure of Link in their gold cartridge form. I got them at a flea market for $8 each.

If you think that's bad, there's this older couple at our local flea market who sells game at ridiculous prices. For example, Ocarina of Time for N64 was $30 under a glass case with other games labeled "Collector's Items" or some bogus b.s.. I think I also saw TMNT IV and Contra III for $18.

Yeah, I remember Bookman's too. That place was/is badass. Haven't been there in ages though.

I just picked me up an FC Twin, a copy of The Adventures of Bayou Billy, and a copy of Rambo for NES. I'm gonna get Rise of the Robots for SNES soon. Everyone owns the good games, but I'll be one of the only ones owning the bad.

On the good games side, I'll be picking up a copy of Metal Warriors soon.
