They all have tons of personality, you just need to play through the whole game, pay attention, and not quit after 5 minutes just to say you played it and it sucked.

I played through FF7 again last summer, and I have to agree with altair.

You know what made me sad? Waiting with great anticipation for Monster Hunter, and then it came out, and in one of the first missions you have to go kill some peaceful dinosaurs that are just eating leaves. I can see taking out some pack of people-eating wolves or something, but being made to just slaughter these nice guys...
I actually never played it again after that, and sold it for cheap iirc.

Your first mission in Final Fantasy IV, where the guy posing as the king of Baron tricks you into killing everyone in Rydia's village.

Well how else are you supposed to redeem yourself!?
I should probably finish that game one day...

No they really don't have personality. They are just cheap stereotypes. And im pretty sure everyone here has played through FF7 more than once.

I can't remember crying or being overly sad because of a video game. Well, I probably did get saddened by a moment in a video game before, but I cannot recall a specific moment.
So, since anime was mentioned, I'll go with anime:
I cried a little bit at the end of Last Exile. |
Last Exile was FUCKING F-A-N-T-A-S-T-I-C-!
I can't stress that enough!

they may not be the deepest cahracters, but I don't think they're jsut cheap sterotypes. the characters in IX were much deeper, I admit, but come on man, this is a series taht started out with nameless characters labeled fighter, black mage, white mage, RED mage, and thief.
I LOLed when the ninja made octagon pee himself.

True i gotta give you that the characters have come along way from me naming them all Poop and Pee.
The sterotype thing iss probably probably from being able to look back after playing other rpgs and other final fantasies. Oh here's Cloud. He must be this games main character with a severe emo complex and a mysterious past. That sorta thing.

thats a generalization.
the guy was so traumatized and fucked up so bad that he started pretending to be another person, until his psychosis got so bad that he actually thought he WAS this other person, then all at once everything snapped togetherfor him and he was lost.

If you're an asshole and you let Barry die in Resident Evil 1, you can search his body and find a picture of his kids with "WE LOVE YOU, DADDY" written on the back. That depressed the fucking hell out of me.

Just now in Final Fantasy 1 when a Dark Wizard killed my entire team with only one move. That's f***in' cheap, game. Congrats, you got me to cry.

Sorry to go on this mildly related tangent, but considering that final fantasy pretty much robbed at least the beastiary and some of the spells (BANE=cloudkill) from DnD 2nd Ed, thats pretty par for the course.
Second edition was rife with things, spells, and traps that would instantly kill you. Furthermore, because of the nature of DnD, you'd be losing your sixth level thief that you got the really good rolls for, with the twenty five page backstory that you've been playing for half a year, gone FOREVER. Ressurection magic was hard to come by and wish cost you like 10 years of your life, so nobodies taking you to some clinic.
Heres the classic example, rot grubs. Your rooting through trash, and boom, rot grub. One round to burn it and your arm with fire. After that, its burrows into your body, and you've better have a potion of cure disease. In three rounds, it reaches your heart and you die.
Even better, some of the nasty undead could eat your soul.

Each main rpg character has a reason for being as they are. But come on now. Squall CLoud and Zidane were way too similar. I mean even in other rpgs the main guy is some history less or mysterious past guy who comes out of nowhere doesnt really know who he is type. CLoud is no exception. Most main guys are somehow linked to the villan and have some super secret power that helps them destroy the bad guy. Only one i can think thats pretty diff is Bartz. He was just in the wrong place at the wrong time.

the fact that they put that in the game was kinda funny. like "look what you did, feel guilty now?"

cloud was introduced mysteriously, but this was nessecary becuase HE didn't even know who he was, later in the game when his entire world came crashing down aroudn him, and he realized that the past twenty years of his life was a total lie and he didn't even have an identity of his own anymore, his mysterious vibe kind of disapepared. he didn't ahve any sort of power over sepiroth that anyone else did, it was just that he felt that landing the killing blow on the guy was HIS responsibility.
squall was a trainwreck of a character. in fact the entire game made little to no sense in my opinion, so fuck him.
zidane is a lot different than the above two. he didn't give off the mysterious loner vibe at all. in fact, he was cracking jokes and trying to get laid most of the time. it's been years since I played that game though, and I didn't finish it, so he might have developed into something more later on in the story, like cloud did.

I tend to have a soft spot for places where you kill innocent people in games, especially (like in Resident Evil 1) if the game tries to make you feel guilty afterward. I usually feel bad about dropping nukes on Rise of Nations, but sometimes the AI makes me so angry and impatient that I do anyway. I also can't play games like Grand Theft Auto (even Rampage sometimes, when I'm feeling especially sensitive) for too long or else my moral compass starts taking hits.
Give me a REASON to kill people though, and it doesn't hurt quite as much. That's why I can still play first-person shooters.
I will admit that I cried like a little girl at the end of the fourth case of Ace Attorney 3. I can't really tell you why. It was going along, having fun, solving mysteries, important backstory important backstory then BOOM I'm crying.
I also almost cried when my data got erased on Bard's Tale (because it was on an emulator and because of the nature of the game, when that data was gone it was gone for good), until I thought things through and managed to salvage it.

If I remember correctly, Zidane is pretty cheerful the whole way through, so he's sorta an anti-Cloud.

The saddest part in any video game is listening to the death music. Or the game over music. That's what gets me every time. As long as the game has some kind of tune to let you know it's over, it is a sad game.

I use "the unforgiven" by metallica for the end credits in my mugen game. I was showing my game off for some co workers during the week and they all thought it sounded more like game over music. I don't think so though. I'm also looking for a generic guitar riff to use on the game over screen.

Metal Gear Solid 3 - The Sorrow battle. Geez, that's unnerving... Except now I've learned my lesson.
