I was reading up on Final Fantasy VII and the article said that the scene where Aerith dies is considered the saddest moment in video games. Do you agree? What is your saddest scene in gaming?

Don't say something like my power went out or I didn't save. I'm talking about a sad scene.

it really depends. I mean, after playing 20 hours of an RPG, you start to get attached to the characters period. add in how tired you may be from playing it, and any sort of mood altering drugs you may be on, and it all adds up.

I won't lie, I cried when aerith died, I was also up for three days and hadn't been taking my antidepressants. I was also sad in MGS when meryl died, which had a lot more emotion and stuff behind it, but I beat it one night before dinner and had taken my pills an hour earlier, so it didn't effect me as much.

Beating Final Fantasy IX on Valentine's Day (the ending is a really romantically sweet one) and I'd just broken up with my girl at the time.

Mine would be in Kingdom Hearts 1, at the end where Sora, Riku, and Kairi get seperated.

When Tellah dies in Final Fantasy IV. That old dude could kick some ass.

And this was more of a "holy shit, I can't believe they did that moment", but when Liu Kang dies in the opening cutscene of Deadly Alliance.

A sad moment would have to be during the almost ending of Lunar 2: Eternal Blue. Hiro saves Lucia after defeating Zophar, and he's glad that they're together. However, she wants to take a look at the Blue Spire (where she arrived on Lunar at), and then BAM! She does this speech, and ditches Hiro, returns to the Blue Star.

I agree that any rpg you play your super attached to the characters. Back in the day i did not have a psx all i had was a snes still, so my FFVII death scene involved my friend inviting me over so i can see this character i didn't even know die.

I guess I'm cold and heartless as I never got emotionally sad by characters dying, even when playing RPG's.

Also, the only time I got a WTF moment was in Phantasy Star II. Near the beginning of the game you are tasked w/finding this girl and take her back to her daddy. Daddy happens to have snapped and just became a crazy militant guy guarding a tunnel. Long story short, dad kills daughter by mistake, then realizing his mistake, kills himself.

I was young and didnt expect that to be in a videogame, only in movies. So, that made an impression, but not a sad one.

I can't remember crying or being overly sad because of a video game. Well, I probably did get saddened by a moment in a video game before, but I cannot recall a specific moment.

So, since anime was mentioned, I'll go with anime:

I cried a little bit at the end of Last Exile.

The ending of Final Fantasy X was pretty sad. When Yuna runs to Tidus, and they just pass through each other.

Also to be honest I saw the Aeris dying vid on youtube in all honesty the blocky graphics destroy any emotion that could be associated with it.

Then again, I suppose if you play the whole game and get attached to the personalities... yeah.

The saddest video game moment ever was when my copy of Super Smash Bros. broke.

Well it was sad for me at least.

... If I had the patience so many threads would be split...

Anyway, sad moments in games? The ending of MGS3 affected me, because I did not understand The Boss until the end sequence and it really made me feel shitty.

Mona Sax's death in Max Payne 2 should've been sad, but I felt somehow good from it. I LOVED the ending in MP2 when I first saw it, rarely have I felt so uplifted. Then I saw the alternate ending to the game and hearing the "There's two survivors" moved me a bit... But the real ending is the first one. Mona needed to die.

Back to Metal Gear, in Solid, Grey Fox's final scenes I felt were the saddest cinemas in the game. ... I also liked that Snake lied to Naomi.

Silent Hill: "Go Home" craved into a desk... and realizing what that meant when you put the pieces together. Also, Lisa.

And the Saddest moment for me is when I missed any jump in a platformer and end up starting over again after an hour of game play.

I just remembered a sequence from Xenogears. Basically this girl misses her father
but earlier in the game you'd been fighting this sewer-dwelling monster named Redrum, which I think was stretched into multiple battles, only to find out that that monster was the girl's father.

Hopefully the small amount of people who've played Fallout on the PC remember the ending.

Although it's not "sad" in any way, it's perhaps more surprising/ironic than your average video game ending.

Especially if you have the bloody mess perk.

I really need to get a hold of those games and play them, assuming I could still run them on XP.

I'm also adding the "real" story for the last case of Phoenix Wright 2 to the list. I just broke Adrian Andrews' final Psyche-Lock and the full story is really depressing.

I don't know how Aeris dying could possibly be the saddest moment in video games considering the fact that none of the characters in that game seemed to have even a fraction of a personality. What's REALLY sad is all the fucked up things that happen to Otacon in Metal Gear Solid. He falls in love with a terrorist who doesn't care about him and later dies right in front of him, and then his step-sister is stabbed to death right before we find out that he was seduced by his step-mother and had an affair with her, which motivated his father to drown himself in their pool. His whole life is like one of his Japanese animes.
