Saying this as both a Star Wars fan and a Soul Calibur fan, wow that's retarded. I would call bullshit all over this except that it's obviously real. There's no conceivable reason why those two should be in this. What's going to annoy me the most (and this is how nerdy I am) is that Lightsabers aren't going to cut right through the other fighter's weapons like they should, they can't all have weapons made of Phrik or Cortosis! On a side note though, the game looks beautiful! Love the ice cave with frozen mammoths.

yeah, but noboby mentions how a pair of nunchuks can block a gigantic battle axe.

Or how anyone can take like 20 hits from the damn thing.

Okay. Heres the explanation. Dying in one to two hits would suck hardcore. Same with some characters being unable to block others.

Soul Calibur is a videogame that actively sacrifices realism for enabling enjoyment. So the makers of Soul Calibur felt like people would enjoy and more importantly would pay big cash money to play as Yoda or Darth Vader. So if the superstarwars geeks would stop trying to fit the situation into common lore they just might enjoy it.

The problem is, Yoda and Darth Vader look ridiculously out of place in Soul Calibur. Link more or less blended in with the other characters. Heihachi did too. Even Spawn didn't look THAT out of place since the game already had a couple of other demons in it.

But Yoda and Vader come from a futuristic space fantasy world. Yes, I know it place "A LONG TIME AGO, IN A GALAXY FAR AWAY". Shut the fuck up. But that doesn't change the fact that the series has a decidely futuristic feel to it. Meanwhile, Soul Calibur has more of a medieval feel to it, even though I'm pretty sure it takes place after the Renaissance. Combining the two is dumb. It's like having your Spacemen Legos visit your big Lego castle and fight with the knights and the Lego dragon. Sure you could do it, but it's fucking stupid. And I know your mommy told you that you were imaginative for doing a space/castle Lego crossover, but she was lying. That was her special secret way of telling you that you're a homo.

The worst part is that Vader and Yoda can't even fucking fight each other. If both characters were in both versions of the game, you could at least have epic Yoda vs. Vader fights which would be fucking amazing despite the circumstances. But you can't. I doubt anyone ever really wondered if Vader could take Nightmare in a fight. If they did, they're a fucking loser.

And how many fucking dicks did Sony suck to get Namco to put Vader in their version? Hey, let's put the better character on a system that NO ONE WANTED. Yeah, brilliant move. The only way that makes sense is if Sony "accidentally" left a giant bag of money on Namco's doorstep.

So I guess it was one step too far for suspension of disbelief?

It doesn't really matter to me. There are only two game series that I play that have weapons present, and they are not 3D.

Also, penny arcade has a post on the matter. You know where to find it, I'm not your damn search engine.

Link *almost* made sense because at least he's from the same sort of fantasy world where SC takes place. But he was completely unbalanced.

In his favor, or against?

Personally i don't know if he's completely unbalanced, but he's pretty cheap....

Oh, definitely in his favor. You could either dwarf-toss people out of the ring, or just go to town with the razor sword.

Wouldn't being cheap make him unbalanced? I never played the gamecube version just the xbox and ps2 and neither heihachi or spawn seemed hard to fight against so maybe it was just because he's link that they uber powered him up.

Heihachi could be cheap if you were good with him; you could just endlessly air combo people once you hit them up.

So I see that they kept the authentic Tekken experience?

that's exaggeration. he couldn't even do his ten hit combos until after a full soul charge.

I do agree with the "suspension of disbelief" post at the top of the page though.

As far as the whole "space men ruining the medieval vibe" thing goes, I would have to say that's why they're bonus characters and not part of the storyline.

Link was kind of cheap, but nothing that couldn't be overcome after a few rounds of studying patterns. if you play best 3 out of 5 rounds at 150 percent health like arcade standard, you have time to do that.

It seems to be a recurring thing in Soul Calibur - Rather than create a new character they use a character from a completely different franchise which already has some form of fanbase, (Link, Spawn, Yoshimitsu, Darth Vader, Yoda) who could be next in the series?

My bet is on the yellow block from Tetris. It can really dish out the pain.

tetris blocks should be in smash brothers, methinks.

also, I'm surprised namco hasn't put loyd irving in SC4, considering he was PART OF THE MAIN STORYLINE OF LEGENDS FOR SOME REASON. also he would be fun to play as and might make more sense than darth vader.

A friend of mind thinks each system will be able to get the other exclusive through a Download feature, but I doubt it. I'd love if they made Jaden Solo the exclusive for a Wii version, but we all know that'll never happen.

On another note, I think Revan's basically Bioware's property, but I'd love if you could have Vader vs. Revan.

Who? Honestly I don't consider anything Star Wars cannon unless Lucas writes it. SO most likely those people wont ever be in games.

Darth Revan's from KOTOR (I think I was thinking of Darth Malak actually). Jaden's a very, very bad guy now from the EU.

I have a Revan action figure. Man, he's so cool. I'm considering putting him in front of Boba Fett... Nah, Boba Fett's still the best.

Quote:
Much has been said about the addition of Star Wars characters to Namco Bandai's upcoming Soul Calibur IV. While purists have raised objections to what is obviously a canny marketing maneuver, the company is hoping that the presence of clashing lightsabers will help push the sales envelope beyond just the hardcore fighting fanbase.
This ambition been made a little more apparent today with the announcement of a third Jedi now entering into the Soul Calibur fray. In a crazy bit of industry cross-promotion, Vader's 'secret apprentice' Starkiller -- from upcoming LucasArts action title Star Wars: The Force Unleashed -- will apparently be joining either his master or Yoda in Soul Calibur IV.

Fans debating whether to buy the Xbox 360 or PS3 versions needn't worry however. According to GameSpot, Starkiller will be appearing as a cross-platform character on both of the next-gen platforms. Look for the new character when Soul Calibur IV launches July 29th or check his debut trailer below.

I never bought a PS3 or Xbox 360. When I get one I'm leaning toward the 360.

Soul Caliber has always been a reason to buy a system Smile Asteroth is my character. The girls are sexy too Smile

If this were to be realistic at all, Darth Vader and Yoda would fucking wreck all of them. Force powers plus the lightsaber cutting through everything.

Yeah, well, I can see your point about physical weapons and energy weapons just fine; I really don't disagree with that at all. However, there's this thing we have in life called "suspension of disbelief," where we accept those sort of things even though it wouldn't obviously work. I think the developers could see us arguing about it, but went with the idea anyway, just so we could see past the actuality of it not working and instead see a couple of really cool characters duke it out with the others.

Also, I'm already getting sick of people complaining about how it doesn't work. Look, I understand, fantasy and sci-fi are different, and mixing SW with SC does seem extremely oddball. But so fucking WHAT?! It's STAR WARS! YODA and VADER, dammit! It doesn't have to work; this idea is by far the best thing that Namco has ever come up with! It was basically about innovation when it came to including Star Wars chars, and I think it'll work perfectly. Besides, they're non-canon, just like those three SC2 people were.

Although I do agree, Leonardo and the Shredder would make sweet additions. In fact, why not make the next SC available for all three systems, and put.....Master Splinter in the third one? You never know.

I want you all to repeat after me:

All the turtles, Shredder, and Casey Jones(the cool one) would be cool to put in SC. Well, I guess weapon overlap on Maxi/Michaelangelo would be a problem, but Elvis isn't a giant turtle! The last good TMNT fighting game was TMNT: Tournament Fighters on the SNES. Actually, on that note, update Aska too Smile

I wonder if Namco is up for using their SC fighting engine, or Tekken, either one, and taking on TMNT in the future.
