I got into it through the Original Generations series, which would be a) about the only SRW games brought to the US and b) deliberately and severely lacking in licensed robots from animes. It was a pretty good game - actually, I'm sort of lying. Back when I played it first, it felt like a lot of work. Then I learned how to play it and it turned out to be a bucket of fun and a half.

By the way, if you can read any kind of Japanese or have an affinity for figuring out and memorizing menus, I'd just like to say that the game gets better very very quickly when you start playing the titles that have licensed 'bots. There's one with Lion Voltron for the DS. True story. He's actually an okay unit. >_>
