So having seen this, I've only got a few comments.

1.) The ending left me feeling a little underwhelmed. I dunno, it just didn't end the way I would've liked it to.

2.) The people behind this are really lauding their grasp over DC IPs for movies, as evidenced by a massive poster for World's Finest near the beginning (right before I Am Legend shows up on screen) and a Green Lantern poster in the window of the video store he goes to. A friend of mine said he saw a Teen Titans poster too, but I must've missed it.

3.) As a pet owner, the final moments with his German shepherd were hard for me to take.

4.) The whole butterfly thing seems like something that was just lucky it worked after pulling it out of his ass.

I don't know what butterfly thing you're talking about, and him strangling his own dog was SUPPOSED to be hard to take. I actually felt bad because I am a sick fuck who LOLed at the scene.

How would you have preferred the movie ended, out of curiosity?

I know it was supposed to be hard to take, I'm saying it succeeded. I would've probably thrown some popcorn at you for laughing too.

Regarding the butterfly thing, first his daughter constantly tries to show him a butterfly with her hands "look at the butterfly," two or three times during the movie you actually see a Monarch, then near the end when the things try breaking down the glass he hears his daughter saying that phrase and sees that the cracks in that plexiglass wall are shaped like a butterfly, looks down and sees the woman has a butterfly tattoo and surmises her blood must be the cure for the virus.

Superman/Batman 5-15-0?
That is a real ad for WB's latest "secret" project. Wink

And the "Teen Titans" poster is indeed in the video store. It is on the wall behind the "clerk" but scene in the wide shot as Will Smith walks down an aisle.

While they kept the Omega Man ending, I too felt underwhelmed. Like have some real balls and just end it with Will Smith tackling the Mummy head-to-head. White out and black letters over white. Okay, that ending would suck too, but I bet it would suck less than the wacky extended ending they went with. That's when I really started thinking how lucky this movie was to be made and for the money it was made for.

And seriously, SHREK!? ...but I did laugh during that scene, I am ashamed to say... Maybe because I also do that to either gloat my nerdity or annoy people.

Disliked it. It was the stupid fast moving CGI virus zombies. Virus do not work that way. What the hell happened to that car he was driving in the beginning? Why do the survivors even need a cure? What the hell was up with the manikin trap? If your an adreneline driven superzombie and you smash your head against something much harder than it repeatedly, your skull will give first.

So it was a lot of things that I disliked. But the FMCGIVZs are what bugged me the most.

the best part about the shrek scene was that he came out of nowhere with it. like, these people jsut met him and have no idea what he's all about, and he goes and flips out in the kitchen, excuses it with "look... I was saving that bacon" then goes upstairs, comes back down, and quotes shrek word for word.

I'd be weirded the fuck out.

Yeah, that scene was strange, until you realized what had happened... Then you think about it after the movie and realize WTF? That went nowhere. Funny while it lasted. Will Smith is CRAZY!

If the zombies are crazy, then why is one of them capable of laying a snare trap and harnessing dogs? Better than standing in a room shaking?

This movie sucked.

The movie didn't suck... but it wasnt good either.

It was just a zombie survival movie that tried to act smart. Except instead of zombies it was vampires.

Nothing great, nothing bad. Just whatever really.

But Will Smith was cut in that movie and he legitimizes being a good actor.

I just now realized that you put text there, my bad on a late response. I kinda agree with you about it though. I guess they were trying to go with the whole "god had this shit on lock, bro" thing, but then you'd think god just wouldn't have allowed a virus that turns people into flesh eating, vampiric zombies to exist in the first place.

The butterfly crack in the plexiglass was God's work. He must really like making martyrs.

I saw it tonight, didn't wow me. Typical Will Smith sci-fi movie; not terrible, but not awesome.

I saw the Vincent Price version finally (aka The Last Man on Earth). Better opening, but, lord, does it have the worst ADR ever (it was filmed in Italy ala Sergio Leone) and pacing problems. Which was better? Eh. I did like how in the Price version there's THREE groups instead of two. Eat that, Omega Man. Evil But, seriously, it was dull as hell.

Anybody note the deeper meaning in the Shrek scene?

When he was talking along with Eddie Murphy's Donkey.

Eddie Murphy in the 80s/early 90s = Will Smith in the late 90s/00s

Listening to the two of them at the same time, made me draw a crap load of simularities between them.

I found out the original ending today.

SPOILERS!!!

Remember, that chick Will Smith cures? She is the girlfriend of the Uber-Vamp. He was just trying to get her back. Will recognizes this and lets her go at the end instead of blowing everything up. This is why the Shrek scene is in the movie, because it helps the theme of "what is a monster". This also would've tied it into the original novel.

Alas, test audiences had no idea what was going on, because they thought the monster was just evil. Although, I had no idea the woman was the cause of Smith's misery, so I guess the film kinda stunk on making it clear that vamp was connected to the uber-bad.

Ummm, yeah. Thats why he set the mannequin trap. Frank was his accomplice in catching the fresh prince.

Also note the forshadowing when he notes that the uber-vamp was practically running into the sunlight to get her back when she's first caught. He says that it may be a corrosion of their ability to feel pain or somesuch, but he manages to put enough doubt that it doesn't seem quite sincere, like he's trying to deny what he actually thinks happened. Its the same scene where mentions that his dog is only immune to the airborne, to set up the old yeller moment.

Right and clarity is why they threw it all away. But they didn't change the script to reflect the changes, so now it's a lot of build up that doesn't pay off. The execution of that subplot could've made it work, so I'm not completely blaming the test audience for the random happy ending.

I only now see the connections there after you guys pointed out what was supposed to be going on. There's really no direct indication that the chick vampire is why the other one is attacking him without, well, you guys pointing it out, the filmmakers fail on that level. Also, way to completely change the ending of the book and by that means, the entire point of the story. In the book, the vampires are intelligent and there is no survivor commune; the whole point is that the guy really is the last human and because of his habit of hunting and killing vampires while they sleep, he becomes to them what vampires are to us. Hence the title "I Am Legend." The movie might as well have been called "Will Smith Fights Vampires" since it missed the idea the entire plot hinges upon.
