Imagine how different things would be in a parallel universe. Who else would have a heart attack seeing a piece of shit like Cheetahmen flourished into the most successful game franchise out there while Super Mario Bros. is considered the worst game ever made? What else would happen.

We would see Software only company Nintendo release games on the The new Sega Ultracast, which would be a HD-DVD console that came with a motion sensing remote, 2 standard controllers, a mouse & keyboard, and a light gun.

Sonic Galaxy would be the holiday smash hit, and people would be drooling over the uncoming Phantasy Star VI. Also, Sonic Smash Brawl would be fun for the whole family as you can choose from such Characters as Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Dr. Robotnik, Toejam, Earl, Rastan, Alex Kidd, Rash, Zitz, Pimple, Space Harrier, Gilius Thunderhead, Tyris Flare, Ax Battler, Wonderboy, and more!

Sega's competitors would be the 3D0 mk4, and the Neo Geo 360, who are also strong systems.

On the PC side of things, Manic Mansion Online would be the number one MMO with over 10 million monthly subscribers. Duke Nuke'em Forever 3 will have just been released, setting a new bar for all FPS games to come. And it all runs beautifully on the newly released Linix 12 operating system with OpenGl 10. But, as always, you have the hardcore geeks claiming that the open licenced "Windows" is better, and that DirectX is a better graphics system.

Also the war between Atari and Commodore is still going strong. Commodore is still the main computer company and its home systems and servers are found the world over. Atari is more of niche computer, whose computers are trendy and sytylish, though their recently released MP3 players known as Cheetahs are selling like crazy, as is their sylish new Cheetah Phone.

Superman 64 is the best game of the 90s, instead of the worst.

Sony and Microsoft would have failed miserably, and we would still have a general hate of the RPG genre...

Also, original Japanese releases will still be "heavily localized", gutted, and censored for an "American audience".

Nintendo would have failed too.

Sega and Atari would be kings of 2007 console market!

I think Bizzaro 64 would be a good game now though. How it works is you fly backwards through squares, and there's no kryptonite fog, you can see forever.

Adventure games, which previously never caught on, suddenly exploded in popularity in the late 90s with the release of Wolfenstein, where the main character must explore a Nazi-era German castle, to find & collect the right combination of random items to outsmart Hitler. As in every Al Lowe game, the final item needed to defeat the fuhrer can be found in a trash can - this time in the medieval era barracks of the castle.

Dragon Warrior, Enix's long-running RPG series, made its return to the Japanese market with the release of Dragon Warrior VIII: The Cursed King, The Dragon Warrior series has been popular in the US since its inception, but has never seemed to catch on quite as much in Japan.

Meanwhile American gaming giant IMANOK is debating whether or not to continue releasing games in its home country. The company owns several popular franchises - Contra, Castlevania, Metal Gear Solid - which are very popular in Japan but which are considered to be absolute crap in America.

Wait, the Japanese don't like Contra or MGS?

Also, Bungie's mascot Master Chief stars in New Super Chief Bros., a game where he must once again rescue Princess Cortana from the evil Prophet of Truth. Finally, a game that returns Master Chief to his sidescrolling roots!

Early programmers realize that bouncing a digital ball back and forth between two paddles on a television screen is not nearly as fun as playing actual table tennis, and scrap their idea in its infancy.

(Speaking of which, Thursday is the 25th anniversary of Pong).

See, you should have played it off as though you did it on purpose since this thread is about an alternate universe.

If we sent a T-800 back in time and killed the makers of Pong, would national obesity be a problem now?

An ever increasing trend finds gamers wanting better playability and fun in games and don't give a rat's ass about graphics, so EA rebudgets their games accordingly. A 2 Million dollar game project now devotes 1.5 million to the game's engine, while the other .5 million is left for artists, sound, marketing, and endorsements.

As a further result, Nvidia and ATI/AMD decide to release new graphics cards every three years, instead of the current 3-6 month cycle.

In other news:

The internet now has wait times to log in and digital tollgates have been installed to access it, as the tubes are getting too full.

Rockstar games is filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy after their string of games that all flopped, including GTA3, Munhunt, Bully, and Max Payne. The only successful game they have released in the last 10 years was State Of Emergancy. Rockstar's lawyer, Jack Thompson, says that he will continue to help them pro-bono as he feels that their games were artistic masterpieces, but they just didn't get the attention they deserved.

In the late 80's Sega releases MechaMen, a game where the player controls eight robot masters as they try to take down the evil robot Megaman and his heinous creator, Dr. Light. The game was a commercial failure and no sequels were ever made.

Also, groundbreaking videogame Night Trap establishes full motion video as the most popular gaming genre, eclipsing both the platformer and the first person shooter. Dana Plato becomes a household name.

Films became irrelevant as all video game adaptations grossed much more than their box office counterparts. Spider-Man 3: The Game wins the 2007 Academy Award.

On a related note, the only films that are bothered to be made anymore are for Full Motion Video (FMV) games.

Alone in the dark would have went on to become the definitive survival horror game...instead of Resident Evil...because that game would have sucked beyond hard.
