Tebor, I heard it's kind of political. Does it go over the top liberal, or can a moderate republican enjoy it?

Ooooooo, it's tough to say. I didn't watch the film as a political film, but there is a lot of it. Pretty much everything the Republican party was doing I accepted as "science fiction". Plus, there's not much in terms of real politics, because the presidential candidate the film follows is kind of a goof (not Bush goofy). There is a scene with Bush and Cheney is mentioned a few times, but I don't remember anything significant.

Actually, I'd compare the politics to that of "Starship Troopers", especially MediaNET which the film pretty much uses. Just replace ST's fake politicians with real names being said and it's similar to that.

Again, I really didn't watch the film as a commentary on Bush's America nor have I thought too much about that aspect. I just want to respect it as an 80s style sci-fi film first. ...But yeah the political bias is there and it's pretty in your face.

Except that ST came out at a time when America wasn't at war and it wasn't considered politically charged. And oddly enough, despite modelling its newscasts after Nazi proganda, ST eventually embraces its proganda as a necessary evil. Yes the newcasts were jingoistic and sanitized, but in the bleak fatalistic world of ST, they never came off as sinister.

Reading this has reminded me how everyone I know who's seen Donnie Darko more than once, including myself, can't stand the thought of watching it again.

The original cut was the first thing I saw, so that paints my opinions.

It's one of my favorite films as well. I also have the soundtrack, but the UK import version that has both the soundtrack and the score (The US version doesn't have the 80s songs on it).

Yeah, the double disc one, right? That's what I have, I listen mainly to the instrumental disc (which is actually currently among the missing Sad ) more than the actual soundtrack disc, but some of the songs on there are great.

I saw it about a month ago. I thought the premises was very interesting and they could have made a really cool movie based off it, but instead it seemed like they just tried to make it as weird as fucking possible. I seriously felt like I needed to be under the influence of some kind of drug to get the most out of it, but it wasn't a total loss. There were some pretty hilarious scenes and I thought The Rock was pretty awesome in it. I have no idea what the fuck you're supposed to deduce from the ending though. I tried reading some explanations on IMDB, but they only confused me further.

oops. didnt even know there was a thread on it.

Time Cop was awesome yet this movie seemed all jumbled. I wonder what the 3 hour version is like. Still the rock was pretty good in it even though it seemed like he was rehashing old parts.

Its more of his composure and lines. Some of the lines and the way he talks reminds me of his rundown character that is used by everyone around him.

I watched this last night. I enjoyed it for the most part, but I found the ending rather unsatisfying. It built and built and then the payoff just wasn't there. The ending was also confusing. They explicitly told us that if those two guys shook hands, the world would end. And it didn't. Hell, they didn't even implode like in TimeCop. Instead, they magically cause an ice cream truck to fly so that a kid can blow up a blimp filled with people that don't especially deserve to be blown up.

The movie has many very entertaining scenes, but in the end it feels more like a bunch of entertaining scenes than a coherent movie. It also feels like Gilliam Lite. Wallace Shawn's character in particular, both in appearance and in personality, feels like he was lifted right out a Terry Gilliam film.

Honestly, knowing Richard Kelley, he doesn't know how to end anything, but he has a lot of good ideas. He needs a ghost writer... But not Ghostwriter.
