The first offical trailer for Richard Kelly's (Donnie Darko) new movie Southland Tales is up. It looks like he trying to pull a Terry Gilliam. The movie looks beyond weird, but in a really cool way. I think I am acually excited about this movie.

And I thought Donnie Darko was confusing...
Interesting cast there. Rock, Sean William Scott, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Mandy Moore, Justin Timberlake, Nora Dunn, Amy Poehler, Jon Lovitz, and Cheri O'Teri?! Geez.
And this better be good. He's got a lot to live up to, especially since that director's cut of Donnie Darko sucked so bad.

What in the hell?
My favorite line in the trailer:
"I'm a pimp and pimps don't commit suicide."
I've never seen Donnie Darko, but after watching this trailer:
What kind of shit is Richard Kelly on?

If I remember correctly, it's either while he's on his meds, off his meds, or on too many of his meds.

If you watch the deleted scenes, you learn that his meds were placebos - sugar pills.

It was still tons better than Superman II: The Donner Cut.

What the fuck is wrong with the director's cut?
I'd say the extra pretentiousness of it, but who am I to talk about being pretentious? But, to be fair, my favorite part of the Director's Cut is the Kevin Smith commentary.

How he explains everything that happens. The fun in those kinds of movies is figuring it out for yourself. Besides, I don't need minute long interstitials highlighting a passage from a book in the middle of a movie.
I'm surprised you haven't heard this criticism before, Kelly even acknowledges it in the dvd commentary. He dismisses it by stating that we always have the original cut.

Donnie Darko wasn't even all that complex. Basically it was a typical time travel plot. Or, it was the adolescent superhero fantasies of a repressed teenager with a hard-on for his sister.
One of those. Right now, I prefer the non Freudian explanation.

I bought the first volume of "Southland Tales" prequel comics. The film comes out in two weeks (I think). Has anyone gotten into the mythology and world of "Southland Tales" yet? I'm just hoping it's worth investing my nerd-obsessed mind time with.

I'm planning on catching it in the morning.
I read the first comic volume... Interesting stuff. I hope the movie makes enough sense if I haven't read volumes II and III.

Well, my whole day is ruined. I was planning to watch this movie but the closest theater is like 30 miles away. So there goes my plan of having a movie day. I'll still have a but I will be upset because I cant watch this one.
Same goes for "No Country for Old Men" by the Coen bros. That's 30 miles away too. sigh.

No Country For Old Men is getting a wider threatrical release in a week or two.
I can't seem to find any theatre in the Chicago area playing this movie. Is it only going to be a limited release, or are they going to expand it at some point?

I just saw it. What can be said about it? You'll either like it or hate it.
I enjoyed the hell out of it. Why? Because it was clearly an 80s-inspired end-of-the-world sci-fi flick. Full of political commentary, big ideas, and 80s-tastic aesthetic decisions getting made.
It's also the best movie most of the SNL alums have ever done... Even if you hated the movie.
Christopher Lambert on the big screen! It's been far to long since the last time.
The film's kind of a remake of Donnie Darko in some regards, but told on a bigger scale. I'd say the first 2/3 is easy to understand, but then the film just gets nuts and weird. VERY David Lynchian. The 80s DUNE Lynch.
I don't know what else to say. Wait! It must be seen. Even if you hate it, it should be seen.

Ugh, like all limited release films in Chicago, it's only playing at Piper's Alley. I have to go downtown everyday, so going special, just for a movie isn't something I want to do. To make matters worse, there's not many showtimes. I get off work early on Wednesday though, so maybe I'll hit the 4:30 show...
Tebor, I heard it's kind of political. Does it go over the top liberal, or can a moderate republican enjoy it?
I remember that in Donnie Darko there was the Dukakis/Bush thing, but it was insignicant enough not to bother me.

So...the addition of like two scenes in the director's cut of Donnie Darko that give a bit more closure to the characters is "explaining too much"? I don't know what director's cut you guys watched, but it's not like Kelly is sitting there reading the Cliff Notes on it or anything, it's still a mind fuck that you have to watch repeatedly to get the gist of. Expect now you'll all post with "No it's not, you're retarded rofl"

You forgot about the interstitials that display pages/lines from the "Philosophy of Time Travel" book. Very revealing.
Stylistically, several songs were swapped out, and some effects were changed. And out of all the deleted scenes to chose from, I can't believe he didn't add the scene where Donnie and his Dad have a conversation at a table in their backyard. I was disappointed with the deleted scene selection, overall. There were better, more emotionally poignant scenes that could have been chosen - especially in the case of the psychologist.
Why did you think there would be childish responses to your post BZ?

I didn't even know those were only in the director's cut (as it's the only version I've seen you see) but I dunno, I think those are pretty damn cool. And still, it's not like those pages spell out every single point out to you. Like I dunno, maybe I'm just slower on the uptake than most, but it took me a second viewing to realize that Donnie burning down the pervert motivational speaker's house down and chopping the pipes at his school weren't just "he's crazy so he does stuff like that" but a reference to the living receiver's ability to conjure fire and water. And I figured I'd get childish responses because, you know, sometimes that happens around here. Not from you guys discussing in here particularly, but you know.
(Plus I'm wicked biased because Donnie Darko is one of my top favorite movies, I own the soundtrack and everything.)

The original cut was the first thing I saw, so that paints my opinions.
It's one of my favorite films as well. I also have the soundtrack, but the UK import version that has both the soundtrack and the score (The US version doesn't have the 80s songs on it).
