I've heard nothing but bad press coming from both gamers and critics alike about the PS3. I think the criticism may be due to the relative badassedness of the Wii, but I'm considering getting a PS3 in the coming months... particularly for RE5 and the new Call of Duty.

Can anyone help me justify this decision? I recognize the superiority of the Wii and will be getting one of those first.

This their insolence is not new, for of old they used it at a less secret gate, which still is found without a bolt. Above it thou didst see the dead inscription; and already on this side of it

I wouldn't get one unless it was a 60GB. I know some people don't mind a lack of BC, but that's a big selling point for me. Or was, anyway.

get a ps3 if you don't have a computer that will be able to run cod4 Wink

I'm not a pc fanboy...I just made a transition from consoles to pc a few years ago. Only get a ps3 really if you plan on heating your house up in the winter.

Personally, I'd get a 360, way more games.

Both those games will be on the 360, and the 360 already has a bunch of great games. Just get a 360.

Why? What's the rush to get a PS3? Name five PS3 exclusive games that you absolutely have to play. If you can't, hold off.

Yeah, I'm gonna wait til God of War III for a PS3. And Gran Turismo of course. But knowing me, I will probably get the one w/the big HDD, whatever that is at that point in time, since they keep on changing SKU's over and over.

I've never personally wanted a 360, because something about the Dashboard system just bothers me, and because of its emphasis on online multiplayer and rankings (I'm a lone wolf). I will admit that it has a bunch of games that I'd like to play.

I did want a PS3 for a long time, for a couple of admittedly stupid reasons. One, I wanted to play PS2 games finally, but thought it might be a better long-term investment to get a PS3, as then I could play PS2 games AND PS3 games on the same system, rather than blowing $120 on a PS2 and then another four hundred on its big brother. Then I discovered that the PS2 emulation wasn't flawless in some parts, and you needed some adapter for PS2 memory cards, and other little things. Maybe it'd be better to just get a nice shiny new silver PS2.

Also, there were two games I wanted - Resistance: Fall of Man and Lair. Resistance turned out to be well-liked, so it didn't let me down. But LAIR was the one I really wanted. I have a love-hate relationship with dragon games, you see. I love dragons, but dragon GAMES tend to be terrible. I figured, come on, surely they can make a good dragon game on the freaking Playstation 3. Nope. I heard Lair was terrible, and that turned me off new games for a while. One of those "everything I look forward to is bad, so why bother" phases.

So... I don't know. I'm not some fanboy that talks you out of getting what you want, so get the console that makes you happiest. All three are nice machines with their own merits, and dammit if they're not all pretty and sleek. But I'm a bitter, bitter man, and I don't see compelling reasons to get anything right now.

Now if you'll excuse me it's time to drink.

Try and find a fat boy ps2 model scph-50001

The slims aren't perfect on ps1 emulation and not even that great with some ps2 games.

the 50001 is regarded as the best ps2 model ever made Wink

Given the technical specs of the PS3, it will survive until at least 2012, probably longer. The Wii and 360 will both have been replaced by that point.

Lemme rephrase that: I plan to get a $400 PS3 when there are games out for it. Or my PS2 breaks, whichever comes first.

Well, if you are planning to use your PS3 for your PS2 games, the $400 one wont cut it. That's if its still the 40gb one because that one is not backwards compatible. Only the big 80gb one is. And all the other ones they harv discontinued like the 20gb + 60gb.

Why the hell wouldn't both versions be backwards-compatible?

There were a bunch of articles about the BC on 1up.com that I cant find now. But, basically in order to cut costs on producing the hardware, they removed a bunch of stuff from the 40GB SKU vs the 80 GB SKU. Basically, when they original 20GB + 60GB systems came out, they were both BC because it shared the same architecture as the PS2 did. Then they realized they were not making money on that, so they changed the architecture and made the PS3 BC only on the new 80GB model but it is BC thru emulation, kind of like the 360. Then they introduced the consumer friendly 40GB and removed the BC altogether to cut down on cost even more. Here's an excerpt from an interview on ign.com:
http://ps3.ign.com/articles/828/828443p1.html

ign.com wrote:
IGN: There's been a lot of talk too about backwards compatibility. What's that factor into for the 40 gig?

Peter: The 40 gigabyte from a backwards compatibility perspective -- it'll play PS One games but we've basically removed the PS2 backwards compatibility. As I said earlier, we're looking to cost reduce the unit so everything's on the table. The research that we have, consumers like backwards compatibility. It's nice to have, but also we know it's not their primary purchase consideration; and price is a more important consideration than PS2 backwards compatibility. So, I think our position on our commitment to the PS2 gamers is such that we've been supporting the PS2 consumer and will continue to support the PS2 as a platform for ten full years. We're in the eighth year. There's 160 games coming out for PS2. So, if you're into PS2 games, we're right there with you, and there's a $129 unit that'll play them very, very well called the PS2.

Again, the ability to get the PS3 down to $399 was kind of the overarching factor there, and I think that stands in contrast to our competition where when they launched - -well, actually before they launched the 360 -- they just cut off the Xbox sales completely. Stopped making software for it. They stopped shipping the hardware. If you bought an Xbox, you're out of luck. That's not the case with the PlayStation 2. Like I said, there's a ten-year product commitment. We're still making great games for PS2, there's 160 PlayStation 2 games coming out this year, and you've got several years left in that system. We really think it's still a very exciting time to be a gamer no matter what platform you've got.

lol maybe by the time more games are out or your PS2 breaks down, the 40GB model might have a software update to have BC available or maybe the 80GB model will have dropped in price. MAYBE.

When my dad bought his, I harped on 60gb, because I knew he'd be pissed that it didn't have BC if he waited for the $399 40gb. But if his 60 takes a shit, then I dunno... I assume they'll "upgrade" your hardware if it's still under warranty and your model isn't produced any more, but upgrading to a newer system that does less shit seems backwards.

The only way that I can reccomend getting a PS3 at this point is if you got the money to burn and you dont need an upgrade on your pc. I got one when they were 600 still and dont regret the investment. Then again, I know if I didnt get it when I had the money in my pocket it would be quite some time before the chance came around again. If you do get one soon, be prepared to get pissed off..... allot. The game delays can drive you insane. Thankfully for me I got a wii and a xbox 360 all sitting next to my pretty blu-ray player Laughing

Good....... Bad......... I'm the guy with the gun

Update: I think I've switched my preference from a PS3 to a 360. I wasn't aware of the problems with PS3 and backward compatibility. Considering I have a bunch of PS2 games and my brother has my actual PS2 in Philly, I gots nothing to play them on.

Since we got talking about PCs though- question for all takers: I haven't gotten into PC gaming, but am looking to start since I always enjoyed the Tom Clancy games, Counter Strike, and the like. I actually have Half Life 2 and haven't gotten a chance to play it yet (I've had it for over a year).
Only problem is I have Vista on my new computer- I haven't really done my research on it, but are there problems with Vista compatibility in most games? I tried playing an old Tom Clancy game (Raven Shield) on my new computer (now that I FINALLY have a decent graphics card and respectable amount of RAM) and couldn't get it to run. Think I'll keep running into this issue?

For the most part, most newer DX9 games run with no problems in Vista. Older games have the most problems. There is no "One fix cures all". The best thing to do is try your game, and if it doesn't work, then look online to see if anyone has found a fix.

Easiest way is to just go to google, and simply type "(Game Name) Vista", and you should find help.

The best answer if you can do it, is just to make a dual boot system with both XP and Vista. Use Vista for vista software and DX10 games, and XP for everything else.

Eh, I'm still gonna buy a PS3 (for MGS4 alone) with the outrageous amounts of cash I will get every month from December until 2009.

I love being spoiled, and I love my mom winning lawsuits.

But it's a Wii and 360 first before anything, don't scream at me!
