I used to watch anime a lot, but the only thing I've been watching lately anime-wise is Death Note. Once you get past how the kid is a giant emo, the show is actually an awesome psychological thriller. Kind of.

I remember watching this anime where the kid thought he was in a videogame and kept assaulting people with a bat. I think it was called Paranoia Agent, or maybe that's a different show. Anyways, the episode I saw was pretty good and could have made a good one part thing. But I guess it was actually a whole series.

Yeah, that was Paranoia Agent. It's a short series, but it's really good. Has the coolest dvd menu screen I've ever seen, too.

Paranoia Agent is a good series, and it gets better when you know what to look for. It stops being another typical japanese mindfuck when you realize its all about delusion.
Also, fun activity. Watch the episode "happy family planning" again, but this time watch for everybodies shadows.
