FIXED! (assuming we are stuck using the same games)
I think this list is more reflective of preceedence, innovation and the impact these games had for their time. Kratos and Master Chief shouldn't even be on this list. God of War and Halo are awesome games, but their impact cannot be compaired to that of Pac Man or Streetfighter, or even Tomb Raider, IMHO. Lora Croft made platforming stylish, sexy, and a bit more sophisticated, but so did Samas Aran (once we knew she was a girl.) I agree that Metroid should have been put on here instead. Gordan Freeman and Halflife redefined the FPS, and his character and story are much more engaging than the marines from DOOM and Quake. But where does Duke Nukem fit in all of this?
Snake introduced us to stealth FPS, and anyone born before 1987 already knows the sheer awesomeness and orgionality that Sonic the Hedgehog once was. He would be higher on the list if his latest games didn't suck so bad. I've never cared for fighting games, but I respect the genre and Streetfighter II's role in defining it. However, I have far greater respect for open ended adventure games, whcih cannot be metioned without Zelda. Pac Man gets number two because of his univeral prescence and appeal; before Mario he was probably the unofficial mascot for video games. Mr. Silverman's decision to use Mrs. Pacman is like saying Mini is the most famous cartoon mouse ever.
And Mario gets number one because he's freakin' Mario. Wait, I need to explain this to you?
Really? Ok, he established the platformer, which is probably one of the most basic and universally appealing forms of videogaming. He also introduced Nintindo to the United States, saved the domestic console market, and shaped gaming into what it is today. Name another game that did all that. Seriously, what's wrong with you?
I think the most comprehensive list of "most important games" is 1up's Greatest 200 Games for Their Time, released in February 2006.

Yes my list is Nintendo heavy, but that's what Nintendo did, it defined video gaming. Remember when we used to say "I'm gonna go play Nintendo" instead of "I'm gonna go play video games?" Nowadays we may say "I'm gonna go play Xbox" or "Playstation," but no one ever says "I'm gonna go play Microsoft" or "Sony."
Think about it.*
Thus ends what will hopefully be my longest post ever.
*Well maybe because it was called the Nintindo Entertainment System, and we just didn't want to say the whole thing. But I choose to believe that it was because it was the best thing evah!
