I have gone out and bought my 1st new Nintendo system since my original NES. I went and got me a DS. (My SNES, N64, and Gamecubes were all purchased used.)

I also have on order a R4 DS and a 2gb Mini-SD.

Anybody else here have a R4?

Does it work pretty good, are there any issues I should be aware of? Also, has anyone tried the R4-DS/EZ Flash 3-in-1 combo?

How is that the Dark Side? Over half the board are Nintendo fans. Now if you had murdered a puppy on the way, that'd be a different story.

I know Bomberman loves his R4, and I plan to get one.

Some of the regulars at my local comic book store have the mini-chips. As far as I can tell, they work great.

I love the DS. I had one, and I left it at my friends house when I went to visit him in Tucson and I havent seen it since. I was gonna jack it back when I went there this past weekend, but he bought Theme Park for it, and I didnt feel like being a dick and taking it away when he bought a game for it.

I was planning to buy the new black/red one w/Brain Age 2 anyhow. So, now I have a legit excuse to spend money.

Anyhow, wtf is an R4?

An R4 is an illegal device that let's you play any DS game you want, plus perks (you can run homebrew, emulators, music and video)

Meowth, that's right!

Knyte, Thank god you got the most easy to use flashcard out there, with drag-and drop action. Yes, it works great. The only games that are bad on it (except if you have the right brand of MicroSD card, what 'cha got?) if is Tony Hawk's Downhill Jam and Castlevania PoR.

And just in case you wanna know, here is the state of emulation on the DS:

nesDS (runs 95% of all NES games perfectly.)
SMS/GG: DSMasterPlus (video is perfect, speed fluxes from too fast to slow depending on screen activity, sound is fucked up in all games except The Ninja.)
SNES: SNEmulDS (Some problems with emulation, large roms like Tales of Phantasia and all SuperFX games don't work.)
Genesis: jEnesisDS (Video emulation is perfect on most games, but no sound yet.)

DS emulation is still in a messy state wih 16-bit consoles due to the difficulty of programming on it.

There's also Atari 2600 (Stella, perfect) MSX 1 and 2 (fMSXDS, fine), ScummVM (ScummVM DS, fine) and Game Boy/GBC (Lameboy, varies by game).

Also, I gotta make a recommendation or a DS game for you to play. Play Eyeshield 21: Max Devilpower. like, right now.

One of the most fun sports games I've ever played in years. And you can do supers!

I ordered a 2gb Kingston Micro SD card. I didn't want to go cheap and buy a gerneric brannd, so I spent the extra dough on a quality name one. Hopefully it will work well.

I'm not too worried about the emulation aspect, since that's what my GP2X is for, and works like a charm on everything from Atari 2600 up through Neo Geo.

So, what's all this crap with "Trimming" files and some games needing an "Arm7 fix"?

My R4 should arrive on Monday and my Micro SD should come on Tuesday, so I'm trying to learn everything I can about the R4, so I will be all set when it arrives.

I bought the Madcatz Pocket Jaguar. It lets me play all my favorite Atari Jaguar games on the go!

I got a PNY 2GB one.

You got the top of the line. You're pretty much set for life, with only slowdowns in Tony Hawk's Downhill Jam. Castlevania: PoR is perfect on the card with no freezing. Confetti goes here.

GP2X's are awesomers. If the MAME emulation is better than it's is on PSP then I'll be getting that really soon.

It's something only people with other brands of flashcards have to know. The R4 runs 99% of games perfectly, with all wi-fi features. You don't have to do shit to the roms.

Are you a bad enough dude to toke that bong?

How does it run Shinobi, or games made after 1994?

Hmmmm... so, how easy/hard is it to use that R4? I'm a total n00b when it comes to emulation on anything other than a PC, so I was wondering if I should get one of those or not. Is it just a cartridge like deal you insert into the DS and then you insert SD cards into that? or do I have to do other crap to it?

I really crossed over to the darkside. I just loaded the direct-to-DVD movie "Bloodrayne 2: Deliverance" onto my PSP.

The funeral is expect to be announced later this week.

Yes, it's just like that. But it's MicroSD cards that go in the cart, not SD cards.

You really should buy an R4 if you never wanna buy a DS game again, or just can't keep up with buying the newest DS games anymore because of money or other reasons (I know that's you)

You don't need to do anything to your DS beforehand unlike what's required for other flashcards, where you run the risk of voiding your DSes' warranty.

Like I said, it's drag-and-drop action. (just put your MicroSD card in the reader included and hook it in to your computer.)

LOL yup. I definitely am in the 'broke cause i got bills' category. So this R4 deal would definitely hook it up.

And you were right, it does look easy as hell. Read up on it on www.R4ds.com

Well, I got my R4 today. It sure looks pretty, and it fits into my DS just fine. Now I just have to wait until tomorrow when the SD card arrives to try it out. I have a 2gb card on the way, and I have already collected all the needed files and roms in a directory so I can just copy it to the root of the SD card and then my R4 will be ready to go! (My folder takes up 1.80GB.) Smile

So until tomorrow, all I can do is just look at my R4 and wonder how awesome it is... And, wish that it was white to match my DS.

Welcome to the club!

What DS games did you put on it? I have 31 DS roms on mine, with Front Mission (the english version), The Simpsons Game and Dementium: The Ward recently added. All good games, especially Front Mission..

I put all the Brian/Eye trainers on there, Zelda, the Marios, Castlevanias, Dementium, Worms, Madden08, Sudoku (Cuss I'm an addict.), All three Pheonix Wrights, Tony Hawks, NFS:Underground 2 and Carbon, and some others.

What really ticked me off if that there is a Romance Of The Three Kingdoms game, but it is Japanese only. And, I don't think I can translate something like that on the go. Crying

Yeah, that's weird about RotTK DS. It was supposed to be localised, but considering it took Koei a year to bring Dynasty Warriors DS here, We won't be getting that anytime soon. There's a sequel to it though due in Japan this winter, and that has a better chance.

I prefer Brain Age 2 over the original imo, and Tony Hawk's Proving Ground is wayyyy better than the others.

If you need a good fighter for it, get Bleach: The Blade of Fate. I can send you my save with all characters unlocked too. Plus, it's online.

I have half the games you described, and if you have wireless could play a match in something online...

Oh, I can also tell you how to skin the R4's OS if you want, and give you a site with a whole lot of skins.

Sad but true.

Others I really like:

Sudoku Gridmaster. (I'm a sudoku junkie.)
TH's Proving Ground.
Final Fantasy III
SEGA Casino
Trauma Center
Castlevania: DOS
Yoshi's Island
NSMB
Mario Kart DS
