Well, Manhunt 2 goes on Halloween, the question is, is it still worth buying?

The article is largely favorable, but I find this one part disheartening:

In the M-rated version, Rockstar has added both an extreme blur effect and in most cases darkened the graphics so that it is nearly impossible to make any sense of what is going on. Players will be able to see character movement, blood splatters, and sometimes they may catch a glimpse of an identifiable action (for example, Danny jamming nails into the legs of a chair-bound opponent), but mostly it's guesswork - a garbled, motiony mess that's far less satisfying. This truth is doubly unfortunate because both everything else is unchanged and because these death strikes are what gamers will want to work toward; they're the pay off for a job well done, but now the pay off is not nearly as rewarding.
Our reactions to these maneuvers really speak volumes. The first time we played Manhunt 2, everybody in the office was very outspoken one way or the other about the grotesque Wii-motion-enhanced kills. (On-screen cues tell players to jab left or right with the Wii remote, to pull up or down with both controllers, etc., and only after the gestures are made does the animation continue.) Onlookers were crying out and laughing and several people were in awe of the game's brutality. But with the updated build, we couldn't fully identify what was going on. We could see movement and hear disgusting noises, but if Rockstar had told us Danny had just decapitated a hunter or strangled him instead, we'd have to take its word for it. Not to suggest that these sequences are completely ruined - they aren't. They're still fun to perform and some of the animations - especially when they're in well-lit rooms where more of the movement can be recognized - are still satisfying and entertaining. |

I played the first one. It was too dark (like, actually dark, as in lacking light) and slow. And if you turned up the contrast it just took away all the nostalgia. I'd kinda be interested in playing this on the Wii if I ever get one, mostly because of all the hype about it. But after hearing about the changes It's gone down even farther on my list of games to buy. Maybe if I see it in the bargain bin I'll think about it.

Here's to hoping Rockstar "accidentally" lets people remove the bullshit effects by use of Gameshark or some other such manipulation.

I wonder how they made the gross sounds? I like the good old fashioned movie way, where you put corn flakes all over a flank of beef and punch it.

Because TRU/WM/GS/EB won't carry AO-rated games, so that basically eliminates 95% of the market for it. I do think it should've been a website exclusive, though.

It's been rumored that hackers had "fixed" the PSP version of Manhunt 2, by removing the violence-filter on at least one of the ultra-violent action game's more objectionable scenes. Rockstar Games confirmed that the work-around exists:
"Hackers apparently have altered one of those edits to produce an illegally modified version of the game that can only be played on an unauthorized, modified PlayStation Portable handheld system," Rockstar reportedly said.
According to Rockstar, most of the filtering remains intact.
Take-Two Chairman Strauss Zelnick said, “I stand behind the game and the ESRB ratings process. It is unfortunately the case that no one in the entertainment software industry is immune from hacking. We hope that consumers will not engage in hacking or download illegally modified copies of our games. We encourage them to enjoy our games as they are meant to be played. We would also like to emphasize that Manhunt 2 is intended for an audience aged 17 and above.”

In other words, Rockstar wants (but can't say) that they want hackers to "fix" their game. Right on. I hope they don't get sued again.
