Who the fuck are they trying to appeal to with this?

First, you've got kids singing Poision's "Nothing But A Good Time" in the background. If you already don't like the song, it's 10 times shittier when it's sung by kids. Even if you *do* like the song, you're still not going to like hearing it sung by Barney & Friends.

Then there's the commercial's premise: some douchebags set up a 360 gaming station at a bus stop and people of both genders and all colors stop to admire it. The point of this, of course, it is to tout the system as being something that's fun for everyone. And then to follow this up, they display three games that are apparently "fun for everyone" - Halo 3, BioShock, and Mass Effect, two FPS and a game that's not out for another fucking month.

Now, I don't claim to but to be an expert on demographics, but I'm pretty sure there are a lot people who wouldn't like those games. For example, all of the girls featured in said commercial.

You're right. They should've had those kids singing Unskinny Bop, ffs

Nah, "Talk Dirty To Me."

And, yeah, it looks like a cheap knock-off of the Nintendo "Wii would like to play" ads.

Personally, I think M$ should go with a more 1989 sega Genesis style ad campaign. Something like, "X-Box does what Nintendon't". Or, something to point out the fact that the Wii is the "light hearted fun for the whole family" system, and that if you introduced the X360 to your family, it would more than likely kill your grandmother.

I would like a commercial where I pull up in a van, get out and shoot all of them in the face with akimbo 1911's, then go "Play PC games instead, loser!" Then the commercial ends and you're just left with a really bad feeling, knowing that those people actually died during the filming of the commercial because they thought they would get free Xbox 360's for being in it.

Yeah, you probably want a commercial commenting on the fact that you did not buy a videogame system to play with stupid fucking grandmother.

90% of the games on the 360 right now are built to appeal to frat boys. So, advertise to fratboys.

Crysis does indeed look pretty damn good.

I'm not saying the 360 isn't a good system; it is. I'm just saying the commercial doesn't really fit with the system.

I've never seen the said commercial, but FPS's are pretty much what made the Xbox famous (despite of some great RPG's), so...
As for the gender issue, forget about it. I've chatted online with a few girls who could probably kick your ass in some FPS's. Laughing

(most of the ones I know personally never played a video game in their lives, but that's another story...)

My girlfriend loves TF2 and Specialists, and can bring the pain in either game. Well, she mostly alleviates the pain as a medic in TF2, but she's is known to rock the double barrel shotgun as the scout. She's also getting painfully good with the mossberg in Specailists, sometimes she'll just instantly snap shot me without me even knowing what the fuck just happened.

Regarding Crysis, I think that the Crytek guys make horrible single player games, but good engines. Far Cry was dull as shit, but it had technical capabilities that were nice. I think that Crysis will probably be the next go-to for the mod scene that people expected HL2 to be, but that never really took off. The in-game map editor, for one, is amazingly streamlined and looks fun to use. That's a nice change of pace from editing in a map making program, compiling to test one stupid thing, alt tabbing into a game, loading a bunch of shit up, seeing where you made one mistake, then going back into the editor ad nauseum.

Here's a snippet about a 360 port of Crysis that happens to be somewhat relevant to the thread now that both of these things have been previously mentioned:

"We hope we aren't disappointing anyone, but contrary to any rumours that may be in circulation, neither Crytek nor any third parties are currently engaged in developing Crysis for console platforms. Our company's sole focus at this time is to complete Crysis for PC as well and as quickly as possible, so we can release it in a timely fashion to all who have shown such a strong interest in playing our game, while insuring we meet the high quality of game play they have come to expect."

Fuck yes. "We hope" my ass. Personally, I hope people wept openly.

I'm sorry, but Crysis would look like crap on a console.

Though, granted they already have the ground work in place for a X360 port. While I was playing the demo it kept telling me the controls for the X360 controller I had plugged in, even though I was playing with mouse and keyboard. And, my controller kept rumbling while sitting on my desk.

What I want to know is why would anyone choose to play a computer FPS with a gamepad, when they got the mouse and keyboard right in front of them???

I like a controller because I only really like to play DOOM single player, for fps. On PS1, even.

I can't stand playing roms or fighting games on my PC without my playstation to USB adapter. Playing them on the keyboard fucking blows. When it comes to games like that, if I'm using a keyboard, I feel like I'm playing "on the computer" instead of playing a video game.

It's totally different with an FPS though. I could never imagine an FPS that's designed as a console FPS and to be played on a gamepad ever having as much depth of play as a PC FPS. Slower, more inarticulate controls with less possible inputs as opposed to an entire keyboard full of buttons and a pinpoint accurate mouse just means dumbed down and boring gameplay mechanics. It's that simple.

I always look at it as PC games overcomplicating stuff. Doom got it right: go in a room, run over stuff to pick it up, and blast on shit. No jetpacking, no jumping, no swimming, no bullshit internal nanomachine lightning bolt bullshit, etc etc. Just me and a gun, fucking stuff up. I think the games that throw more objectives at you than "kill the shit out of everything" should be called FPAs.

The only PC game I've found that I enjoy that overcomplicates things is MechWarrior. Also, I have to get one of those PS2 to USB adapters. Playing Street Fighter on the keyboard is pretty gimpy.

You'd probably like Doom 3. It keeps things relatively simple. I don't think that having accurate aiming is over-complicating things though. Having accurate aim is adequate and required. Over simplifying things is what's ruining gaming, not over complicating.

Mechwarrior 2 is pretty easy once you learn the keystrokes. Same with Tie Fighter. I fucking love Tie Fighter because of all the keystrokes and shit you have to do, you feel like you're actually having to manage the cockpit of a spacecraft, not just point and click like a dumb baby.

Aiming pisses me off. I just wanna turn and if it's in the same line as my gun, it'll be hit. Having to move the gun up and down bugs me.

I've got an N64-PSX USB Adaptor, but it will not accept any of my PS2 controllers. I think I actually need a PSX controller to work it, which is gimp. Street Fighter is annoying on an N64 controller. Everything else works okay, though. I can get my Gradius 3 fix with it when I need to. Speaking of which...

What's wrong with just using an MS Sidewinder? I've had the same one for ages and it works just fine.

Why do you have a SideWinder when you don't even want to worry about aiming. The touchpad on my laptop is OK for Doom.

And yeah, I figured out MechWarrior eventually. I was talking about playing 2 when I was five. I had no idea what the hell to do.

Sidewinder? Maybe I'm thinking of the wrong name. It's a pad that's laid out like a Saturn pad.

I personally love my X360 gamepad. I don't even own a 360, I just bought a controller for my PC. It works great.

I think I have always prefered the Xbox controllers, (Type S and 360), becasue they are like the next step in evolution of the Dreamcast controller, which is my favorite.

The playstation D-pad rapes my thumb horrifically after a good session of street fighter. It's the only D-pad that actually fucking HURTS to use. I hate the X-Box D-pad because it's way too far out of the way to be useful for games I like to play. The only D-pad I really like is the Sega Genesis one, or a Saturn pad. Other than that I just use a PS2 pad because I have no other adapter.

The only reason I value mouse and keyboard over simplistic controls and auto aim is because I like competitive FPS gaming. Anything other than mouse+keyboard is, simply put, scrub shit.

Compared to the playstation 2 D-pad, I for some strange reason get more mileage out of street fighter on a keyboard. Its weird, but you get used to it, and its very precise.

Cant play 360 grapplers though.
