Leno announced in 2004 that would retire in 2009 and hand The Tonight Show over to Conan O'Brien. Now it seems that might not happen. Leno has been the undisputed king of late night ratings since July 1995, and sources close to NBC are saying he doesn't want to retire. It seems that NBC, afraid of losing Conan to ABC, convinced Leno to retire so that they could get Conan to agree to stay. Leno agreed at the time, but now he's having second thoughts. It's unclear what will happen. Leno is consistent ratings winner, but Conan brings in a younger audience. And whichever host doesn't get The Tonight Show in 2009 is very likely to jump ship to another network. Also, if NBC doesn't give The Tonight Show to Conan in 2009, they will have to pay him $40 million. That's pocket change to them, but it's still a factor.
