I am livid.

I've discovered today that some assholes purchased Press Start for the sole purpose of ripping it and putting it online. It has now been downloaded by more people than actually bought the DVD. Lots more.

It was uploaded to a number of divx sites and has now been downloaded hundreds of times before apparently being taken down. And that's just one instance.

For anyone who thinks "hey, but at least that means you've made it famous", tell that to my bank account. I wasn't getting rich off Press Start. Hell, I'm still making back its minuscule budget. Pirating Press Start isn't "sticking it to the Man." It's fucking stealing.

These fuckers don't have a clue who made it, they just want to watch a movie for free. I didn't put two years of my life into this so that people who don't feel like paying for it can do that. If you don't want to pay for it, then tough. Or get a friend to buy it and watch theirs.

So here's what. If you pirate movies, fuck you.

And if you don't, keep up the good work.

Seriously though dude, that's some bullshit. Hunt them down.

Thou, because I am wroth, be not dismayed, for I shall win the strife, whoever circle round within for the defence. This their insolence is not new, for of old they used it at a less secret gate, which still is found without a bolt. Above it thou didst see the dead inscription; and already on this side of it
descends the steep, passing without escort through the circles,
One such that by him the city shall be opened to us.

I assume you've never downloaded anything illegally then?
I don't know what this movie of yours is, but I feel for you. It sucks to have your work stolen and rights violated.

Have I ever? Yeah. I don't anymore, haven't for quite some time. It's wrong, and I shouldn't have done it then. Heck, I can't even remember the last ROM I downloaded.

But you know what I've never done? Ever? Pirated some tiny operation's product.

I'm not interested in debating the finer points of piracy -- business ethics, politics, etc. And lack of availability creates a whole other grey area where I'm probably on the other side of the debate. But when a product is readily available for purchase? And indeed, JUST CAME OUT? Bull.

Anyhow, I've calmed down a bit, less livid than I was before. But man if that still doesn't piss me off.

Shit Darkmaze, I didnt realize you made the movie, that's cool. That whole downloading thing sucks though. Seriously, I download, but I only download songs from albums I have on record or tape and want on my computer. I've already paid the artist, so I don't see anything wrong with it. Fuck, that really sucks dude. That's gay that people steal like that

Thanks. And like I said there's all kinds of grey area when it comes to downloading in general. iTunes makes you pay for song downloads? Fine. But they only give it to you in their proprietary format that you can't play on non-iPod MP3 players. Bullshit. Rolling Eyes

At first I thought this was another continuation of the obnoxious "pirate Vs ninja" debate, so I'm somewhat relieved.

In any case, they are terrible people and I hope they contract "dessicated genetalia syndrome".

Well, I agree it does suck your own project got pirated. Especially when you dont have a huge budget to work off of, like Hollywood movies do. And like you said, especially when it just came out and its not on a limited release.

BTW, I will submit my order on the 30th when I get paid homie.

You'll make it back when "Press Start: Video Game Challenge" comes on the air. I still have to order my own copy still. Embarrassed

It's probably wise to plan in your budget or whatever, that things will be pirated. I don't think it's any less OK to pirate your things than Apple's or whoever, but it's a part of business nowadays.

I told my friend Jacob that if he torrented it I'd punch him in the throat. We should hunt down all these people who pirated it and punch them in the throat until they suffocate.

Also, I'm waiting on my next(first) paycheck to buy it. Can't wait!

I can understand downloading a big Hollywood movie like the new Star Wars or something, but not a movie like yours. Besides, what does it sell for $20, $30? Just pay the damn money.

Yeah, it's $13 -- a bit more with S&H. And in case it was unclear, I didn't mean to make it sound like any of you guys would pirate my flick, I just had to vent.

Sadly, though, bjork is absolutely correct -- it's part of business nowadays. Even for little guys. And that's really depressing.

I do pirate music, but that's because I've had no money. I'll buy the CDs when I can. As for ROMs, I don't own the consoles and the games would be hard as fuck to find.

Arcade emulation should be encouraged, as well as old computer games because fuckface companies don't make them available.

If I can buy a home version of Guwange, I'll gladly do so, but buying arcade boards isn't cost-effective.

Well. My only real point to make is where were people like you when recordable vhs movies were made? Same principle, just not on cyberspace.

Additionally, some arcade games have very limited production runs, and even those that don't get harder to find over time. Do you know how hard it is to find a 70s Space Invader that is both in good working condition AND in good physical condition? Like IMPOSSIBLE.

The vast majority of arcade machines get thrown out when they break instead of getting fixed, so every machine is on an eventual path to complete non-existence, unless the games get ported to arcade collections for consoles.

But people who pirate Press Start, or any other independently produced project, are definitely assholes. It's simply not cool. Also, I don't understand why anyone would do it. Why would you pay MSRP for a product and then put it online for other people to get for free? You're not going to get any money out of it, and now you're out $13 of your own money. You're not going to get any glory out of it either. No one gives a shit who ripped the movie. There's no honor among thieves, and there's no gratitude among them either. Ooh, so you were the first guy to upload Revenge of the Sith? NO ONE FUCKING CARES. They just care that they have it.

The worst part about piracy is that kids learn about it at any age and it helps foster a dangerous sense of entitlement, because once you get used to getting stuff for free, you begin to believe you DESERVE stuff for free, and people you know it, America's well on its way to becoming a vile socialist dystopia. Why can't the government give me free health care? Why can't the government give me free college? Why can't the government wipe my ass for me? Hey, try WORKING, asshole.

I live in canada, meaning i'm free to pirate anything I want without considering the consequences.

I pirate movies. I take that "fuck you" to offense. You should just be happy people want to see your movie. Yes, I understand that losing a bit of money sucks, and that people not actually buying your art can be a little akward.

but seriously man, you've created something that at least hundreds of people are willing to break the law (well, not really) to see. As a fucking artist, you should grow up and appreciate the fact that you've created something worth while. If you were EVER making this movie with the intent to make anything more then the budget back off of it, then FUCK YOU right back because you were in it for the wrong reasons in the first place. I hope you make your budget back and break even, and that you at least have moderate sale success if not fantastic sale success, but try not to look at it negatively when it comes to people downloading your movies. It's poor people who cannot fucking afford to buy your dvd and pay shipping, but still care enough to want to view your piece of work. that's all that matters pal.

I am a worthless piece of crap.

Ah yes, the "if you want to make money, you're not a real artist" argument.

That argument is largely true when used against musicians and painters, but not so much in DarkMaze's field. As an independent filmmaker, DarkMaze needs to make money. Little, if any, of this money will go into his pockets. Most of it will go to finance his next movie so that he can have better sets, more props, the latest editing software, or whatever else he needs. The sort of budget that allows him to rent an abandoned industrial complex when he needs to film a scene in an abandoned research lab instead of using a cleverly disguised school building.

budget + new props and sets does not automatically + better movie.
if dark maze has a good idea (which he clearly does. i love press start) then he can make it work with as little or as much as possible.

The point is, I know you have to make money. I know movie making is an expensive deal, but so is making music, and so is painting, and so is writing in a way. I'm a musician and a writer myself, and i've done a few paintings, but i'm just not interesting in selling any of it. if someone says to me "wow, that was a great song" or "I really appreciate ______ that you've done" then my satisfaction knows no bounds. Someone outside my own brain truly appreciates something i've worked hard at. I don't care that i had to spend 700 out of my own pocket on gear and recording. I don't mind buying canvas and paints. I don't mind buying ink for my typewriter (i'm old school like that), I don't mind about spending any money because I am a)doing something that feels worthwhile to me and helps me sort out my own thoughts and put them on paper/canvas, and b) i'm making something that could emotionally touch someone in a profound way, or get someone interested in something new.

if you really need extra money for a film, get a job! get another job. Make Movie making your passion, not your career. If money comes, let it, but don't complain when someone wants to experience what you've done for free. .

I am a worthless piece of crap.

Syd said it better than I could have.

To go a little further, though: unlike painting, writing, or sometimes even music, filmmaking is not a one-man art. It takes writers, actors, directors, cinematographers, electric crew, and all the other titles you see in a movie's credits. In very low-budget films many of those roles are consolidated, but it's never a one-person endeavor. All of those people put significant time and effort into making the film a reality. In the case of Press Start every single person did it for free, and for many that meant a two-year commitment. For me, it meant nearly every moment I wasn't at work for two years, and a great deal of time that should have been spent sleeping. Easily two full-time jobs.

To put it a different way, I couldn't do it a second time with that kind of budget. I couldn't ask those people to do a fortune's worth of work for free again. I can't do the work of every crewperson -- most of which I have little to no training in -- again. It was impossibly taxing. In order to make another film, I need to do more than buy better equipment; I need to be able to pay people.

I'm not saying I'm entitled to a fortune simply because I've made a film, but I think it's enough to ask people not to steal it.

I had relieved my hatred towards B.B.'s posts until I read these two. B.B. plain and simple...go to hell...just because your a self righteous artist and would never "want" to make money on your writings, paintings, and songs. Your so full of B.S. its brimming out of your ears. To tell Darkmaze "Fuck You" for maybe having his past two years make a little bit of money, go somewhere else with that shit. Darkmaze...yea it sucks that this is going on, its never going to stop either. If you need an actor I'll do it for free lodging during the shoot. Very Happy
