Hi Everyone,
I'm trying to locate a SNES game that I rented once way back... I'll try to recall as many details as I possibly can about the game, but unfortunately what I can remember is very limited. Oh by the way, I stumbled upon this site while reading the Adventure Island review. Great fun that game, although my favorite would have to be Super Adventure Island 2 (the Wonderboy parallels are limitless).
Anyway, the game was a 1-2 player mixture of beat em up/adventure game in a similar vein to River City Ransom mixed with Zelda II: The Adventure of Link. It was no doubt made by a Japanese developer, as I recall the characters you played resembled the River City Ransom/Double Dragon characters wearing karate uniforms (I tried looking up Technos thinking they must have made this game, but the majority of info I could find on Technos all relates to River City Ransom and its sports shoot offs and Double Dragon). The gameplay itself reminded me of River City Ransom mixed with Zelda II: The game gave you a top-down world map where you could have random encounters and then have to fight a slew of enemies in a side scrolling environment (Think Zelda II style). Fighting enemies was in the vein of River City Ransom, where the playable characters (2 players could play and like in River City you could accidentally beat each other up when you attack) used martial arts to beat up enemies. I vaguely remember that you could travel to towns and buy new techniques and items just like River City (although I may be wrong on that), but I do remember that you could travel to dungeons and castles where you would have to clear em out (Like Zelda II). I vaguely remember the setting... I think it was supposed to be a medieval Japan setting, although I could be wrong.
Any and all help would be greatly appreciated.

Nope, although I did rent that game many times back in the day. I remember liking the 2 N64 incarnations as well. Also if I'm not mistaken, that series was developed by Konami.
I've been trying to look at more games done by Technos, but it looks like they didn't make a huge amount of games. They're mostly known for River City Ransom and all of its offshoots and Double Dragon.
But like I said, the "beat em up" style of this game resembles something I would have expected Technos to do.
Thanks for your continuing help.

Hammerin' Harry? |
I didn't know Hammerin' Harry was released on the SNES? But anyway this game didn't feature weapons as a main means for beating up enemies (at least that's what I remember). I guess it's possible this title I'm looking for was developed by Irem, but as far as I know the only thing Irem released in North America was Super R-type.
I'm desperately trying to located this title, it was loads of fun, and the two player mode was quite epic, I think the game possibly had a save feature too?
It's weird how these obscure titles that you remember fondly playing get lost in the back of your head... I totally forgot about Monster Party until reading an article about it here, but luckily I've owned a copy of that game for a while now.
Still trying...

Hammerin' Harry had a SNES version, I think it was only released in Japan though. It was much different than both the NES and Arcade incarnations.
I wasn't sure if the game you're looking for was released in North America or not. Now that I know it was, that should narrow things down.

The Game you are thinking of is Super Ninja Boy. It did have weapons that you could pick up such as kendo sticks and nunchukas, but the primary attacks were martial arts such as the "Miracle Kick" and "Moonsault". It didn't have a save feature, it had a ridiculously long password feature. At the end of the end you flew around in giant mech.

YES! Thank you Valdronius.

This is exactly it. The game had this mixture of beat em up/rpg style that I thought was lots of fun. You would walk around on an overhead map until you encountered an enemy, and then you could beat em up River City Ransom style and gain experience and level up. The dungeons were in this style too, but some of them were platformer levels, and the boss battles were traditional turn-based rpg fights. Everything in a neat little package.
Thanks for all of the help!
P.S. - I read your Pocky and Rocky review, it's definitely one of my favorite games on the SNES alongside its sequel. I'm guessing you've already heard about the soon to come Kiki Kai World for Wii?

Can't wait for another Pocky and Rocky installment.

Pocky and Rocky with Becky was pretty horrible. I was all stoked when I found it, then disappointed when I actually played it.

It certainly was much easier than its predecessors, and shorter too, but for what it was worth I enjoyed it. The game is becoming increasingly harder to find as well.
The original KiKi KaiKai was actually at an arcade near my home back in the day, so my admiration for this series goes way back. Rocky was the last boss interestingly enough.
