Not meaning to start more ranting about whether older or new is better, but you guys have to agree that the original games on the NES were better than their SNES Trilogy iterations. Hell, if memory serves they reused environments in their 8-bit form, and Trilogy's recreation of the music sounded really lame. Really kind of a pisspoor collection if you ask me.
In fact, I can't think of any good game compilations besides Super Mario All-Stars off the top of my head. What are some other good game compilations?

Ninja Gaiden Trilogy sucks for essentially being an 8-bit port on a 16-bit cartridge, but Super Mario All-Stars SUCKS as well. Hell, SMAS sucks more than NGT because it attempts to update games that didn't fucking need to be updated.
The controls are off... Mario runs like he's got KY Jelly on shoes. Not only that, but they fucking BUTCHERED SMB1:
1. No Minus World
2. No infinite lives trick
3. Stupid ass Mario backgrounds in the coin rooms
4. World 6-3 is in color.
5. The game physics are altered
6. The redone music sucks
The only cool thing about SMAS was Lost Levels, and Lost Levels is nowhere near as fun as the original SMB2J version. Not only that, but they made the Poison Mushrooms retardedly easy to spot. In the original version, they strongly resembled Magic Mushrooms, at least in the outdoor levels. And again, the controls are off. Mario doesn't control as well as he does in the original game.
I don't understand why people mark out over SMAS. I assume that most of them were born in or after 1989, missed out on the 8-bit gaming era, and simply don't know any better.
The only acceptable game collections are retro collections like Mega Man X Collection, Midway Arcade Classics, and Sonic Gems that give you flawless (well, except Sonic CD) versions of a bunch of classic games on one disc.

I personally don't have a problem with All-Star's controls, but I guess I see your point. The Sonic Mega and Gems collections are both great indeed, as well as the Megaman Collections. And not to be left out is Street Fighter Anniversary Collection and Street Fighter Alpha Anthology. I'd put Alpha Anthology above Anniversary Collection though, but only because all I play on the Anniversary Collection is Street Fighter 3, and Alpha Anthology gives you much more bang for your buck with the unlockable modes like the Vs. exclusive Hyper SF Alpha and that creepy Super Gem Fighters game.

I tend to think of All-Stars as merely an alternative rather than a replacement for the originals. Sure they omitted a bunch of stuff, but I enjoyed the updated graphics and music; and as a novelty it works great for me.
But when I really want to play SMB 1-3, it's the classic versions all the way.

For a lot of people back then, SMAS let them play the classics without dragging out the NES and blowing in the carts and shit. Not for me, as I didn't own an NES until 96 and an SNES until 97, but I know that was a big deal for some people, as their parents sold the NES in a garage sale, etc.

-Ninja Gaiden Trilogy: Sucks balls
-All-Stars: Pretty kool
-Alpha Busterz - essential for Alpha 2 Gold
I hate playing the japanese version of SMB2 for one reason, no save games. Good GOD does that suck balls. Of course you can always use save states on an emulator, but that's a slippery slope and once you start doing that you can quickly devolve into a quicksave whore, ruining any challenge.
I made a rule to only quicksave at the beginning of a new world after beating a castle, so I think I still got the real difficulty.

If you're going to remake a game, it's got to be special, and the SMAS remakes weren't. The graphical improvements weren't drastic enough, the color palette wasn't vibrant enough, and as I said before, the game didn't control as well as it should have. The end was result a game that looked and played a lot like the unlicensed DOS Mario games and clones that were showing up on BBS systems around the same time.
I think my biggest problem with SMAS is the color palette. One of the Super Nintendo's greatest strengths was its color capabilities; the system was capable of displaying 32,768 different colors. This greatly outshined the Genesis which was only capable of 1536 colors total, and 61 colors could be onscreen at any given time. Despite having such a big color selection at its disposal, the SMB remakes are very colorful at all. The SMAS version of SMB1 uses more subdued colors than its predecessor, and that really takes away from the game. This is most noticeable in the outdoor levels. The sky looks washed out and the vegetation is too pale. The color palette and background design have more in common with Bugs Bunny's Birthday Blowout than they do with the real version of SMB1.

Yeah. I agree with you 100% on the graphics being sub-par. Everything has a shitty, washed-out, pastel look to it. Also, the lame-ass mario backgrounds in the underground levels completely take you out of the game. It's like, total breaking of the fourth wall. OH HEY IT'S A ME MARIO I'M WINKING AT YOU IT'S OK KIDS DON'T BE AFRAID OF THIS SCARY SEWER. Dumb.
Also, as you may know, I've previously made an entire thread just about how dumb the new sprites are. I hate how they no longer have the classic side-view sprite for little mario and luigi, but instead just recycled the Mario 3 style one.

What did you guys feel about the remake on the GBC? That one was fairly decent and had some new twists (ghost races etc etc) to keep it fairly fresh IMO.
