I was watching Commando earlier today, (One of my favorite movies as a kid.) and a thought dawned on me:

They (Jack Thomson, The Media, The PTC, etc.) bitch about how violent video games are turning our children in to heartless killers and such.

Well, the violent games they point at are all usually "M" rated and are not targeted at younger children. The are rated for adults, and are targeted at an older audience. Kids still love them, but what's new?

How about back in the 80s, when companies would take graphically violent movies and then specifically target them towards children by making cartoons out of them?

Three examples:

1. Robocop

An extremely dark and violent movie with graphic scenes and an immense bodycount. A cop is brutally murdered and turned into a cyborg to give the underpowered and understaffed police force an edge against the criminals who have taken over most of the city. There is like a death every 2 minutes in the movie.

(THIS IS VERY BLOODY, AND PROBABLY NSFW!)

Turns into this:

2. Rambo

First Blood was a serious story of a war vet who suffers from post-war depression and is pushed over the edge by the cruelty of society and they way they treat veterns. In part II, since he is only good at war, and is expendable, he is sent back to Vietnam in a political ploy to make the government look better. He was expected to come back empty handed, but instead he returns with MIAs after many a long and bloody battles with enemies. After being used by his country he departs to try to find inner piece at last. Only to become involved in the Afgan-Russian war when a friend is captured. And, the bodies begin to stack up.

This: (R rated footage. May or May not be NSFW. Viwer discresion is advised.)

Turns Into This:

3. The Toxic Avenger

In the worst of all cases in my opinion. Troma films are known for their shocking imagery; some would categorize them as shock exploitation films. They typically contain overt sexuality, graphic violence, wry political satire, a bizarre sense of humor and gratuitous gore and nudity. Thier most famous film is The Toxic Avenger. A 98lb nerd is riduculed and picked on until he falls into a vat of toxic waste and becomes a mutant who then extract revenges on those who pick on and commits crimes against others. In a very, very graphic and bloody way.

This: (NSFW, and very graphic)

Turns Into This:

Never has a game studio like Rockstar ever said that any of its notorious games such as the GTA series or Manhunt are made for kids. By apparently Hollywood doesn't use that same discresion.

Thoughts? Or Any other examples you can think of?

I was going to mention Attack of the Killer Tomatoes as well, but apparently that movie wasn't R.

Yeah, I don't even recall Killer Tomatoes being all that kid-unfriendly. Actually, maybe it was, I dunno.

However, in the same vein as Toxic Avenger, there was Sgt. Kabukiman NYPD. Same deal, Troma's R-rated movie was kiddified for Saturday morning cartoonage.

Don't bitch about how no one bitches about violent movies being marketed to kids, because I hear that nearly weekly now Confused. Plus, I recall the "Blade" and "Starship Troopers" toys being under attack in the late 90s for that very reason.

Anyway, there are too many people in this world who bitch about movies, I wish they'd join forces and end all sports. But no... Rolling Eyes
