Last Jew in Afghanistan marks Yom Kippur alone
by Beatrice Khadige
Sat Sep 22, 12:42 AM ET

Zebulon Simentov, the last Jew in Afghanistan, is once again marking the Jewish holy day of fasting in solitude, in a deserted synagogue in the capital of a devoutly Islamic nation.

"I have everything I need for the 24 hours of praying and fasting," Simentov tells AFP before the start of Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement, at sunset on Friday.

Around two decades ago, there were still about 20 Afghan Jewish families living in Kabul, although all were from Herat -- the largest city in northwestern Afghanistan near the border with Iran.

Through the Soviet occupation of the 1980s, the subsequent civil war and the Taliban's 1996-2001 regime, all went to Israel or moved to neighbouring former Soviet republics -- undoing a Jewish presence built up from the seventh century.

Only Simentov has been left behind, becoming by default the guardian of Kabul's empty synagogue.

The room where he receives visitors was once a prayer room for women. On the wall are pictures of Afghan President Hamid Karzai and the late ultra-orthodox Lubavitch rabbi, Menahem Scheerson.

Adjoining this room is the bare-walled "small synagogue" for men, where he prefers to pray.

Simentov, approaching 50, dislikes the "big synagogue" across the corridor -- another large and dirty room in which stands only a platform traditionally reserved for the rabbi.

A cupboard built into the wall faces Jerusalem. Its doors are open and it has been stripped of its treasure, a scroll of the Torah.

The precious document was stolen by a Taliban during the rule of the Islamist movement which was driven from government six years ago by a coalition led by the United States.

The man "wanted to sell it, thinking it was valuable," Simentov says in Dari, one of the main languages in Afghanistan. He says he reads Hebrew perfectly but prefers not to speak it.

"Today that Taliban is jailed at Guantanamo Bay and I am waiting for him to be freed so I can ask him to return the Tables of the Law," says Simentov, who wears a Jewish cap called a kippa, but is otherwise dressed like an Afghan.

Simentov is alone. His wife and two children are in Israel, which he says he has not visited since 1998.

"I have been the only Jew in Afghanistan for two years," he says. Ishaq Levin, the synagogue's former guardian, died from illness two years ago aged around 80.

Simentov says it is not easy to practise his religion alone.

But he has obtained special permission from a rabbi in Tashkent, capital of neighbouring Uzbekistan and home to 15,000 Jews, to slaughter his own meat in the kosher way that can normally only be done by a special rabbi.

Otherwise this former carpet salesman appears perfectly integrated into Kabul, where he is well-known by people who live around the synagogue, and warmly greeted when he is outside.

Jews have lived in several regions of Afghanistan and legends abound about their presence.

One says the Pashtuns, one of the main ethnic groups in Afghanistan, descended from a tribe from Israel. Another says the name Afghanistan comes from Afghana, grandson of King Saul -- the first king of the ancient Kingdom of Israel

That's sad, humbling, and wonderful all at the same time.

I hope this publicity doesn't make him a target now.

This kind of reminds me of a Muslim woman who lives here. She is the only person on PEI to dress in the full Islamic dress. She actually wears a full Burqa with only an eye opening. There are some other women who wear just the head veil, but who's faces are not covered. I have a lot of respect for her, because I've seen her many times on the bus, and she always gets horrible looks from passengers. She has to have very strong faith to live that way around here. Also, this woman is beautiful:

When you fully comply with the degradation and subjugation of your gender, I don't call that beautiful.

I guess that this is an outsiders opinion. I'd guess that someone who is a practicing Muslim would feel drastically different. I personally would find that to be a very closed minded opinion. I really don't get that opinion at all, to me, wearing a Burqa is a sign of commitment to the Islamic faith. I wish that people would start questioning why Catholics eat the eucharist every week... it doesn't seem any more "normal" to partake in the eating of stale bread chips.

You know, the actual muslim faith just calls for female modesty, i.e. not dressing like a slut. The extremists took it to what it is now.

And you have the insider scoop on the Islamic faith? How do all those practicing female Muslims you talk to feel on the subject?

I wouldn't really expect many of you to believe me (except Val since he knows me outside of here), but I know several Muslim women, all who freely wear the Burqa. When I worked in Montreal, one of my female co-workers had actually converted to the Islamic faith - she was a white Canadian. I have never met a Muslim woman who had an issue with their dress. Personally, if I truly believed in everything written in the Qu'ran, I'd have no issues converting to that faith and wearing a Burqa.

We're all missing a key point: he hasn't visited his wife and kids since 1998. There's a line between being faithful and being an idiot.

I'm sure that the real reason he doesn't leave is because he likes the attention. Let's face facts: if this was only about faith, he wouldn't be talking to reporters about it. And he wouldn't have a wife and kids he hasn't seen in 9 years. Dick.

The article never gets into detail about the subject of his wife and kids. I assumed it's his EX-wife and kids.

On the subject of Muslim women, most of the ones I've met either wore the head scarf or nothing distinctly "muslim" at all. Once I encountered an orthadox Muslim family at the Subway where I worked, and all the women were completely covered except for their eyes. Honestly, they reminded me of ninjas.

I know it's insensitive, but the impression these women gave me was: look at us! We're different and foreign, and you have to deal with it! Look at how moral and orthodox we are compaired to your deginerate American women! Unlike them, we hide our womanhood, and righfully so! We are here to teach your country a lesson in morality by example, and it's a pity we must stay here and suffer from all this imorality (while simultaniously enjoying all modern conviniences and realative tolerence and safety of American society.)

I know it's unfair, but that's how I feel when I see women dressed like that in this country. Dressing like a ninja on any day other than Halloween can't be pleasant, so the only joy I can see them getting out of it is feeling morally superior.

Of course, if an American woman walks down the street in Kabul, she'll probabily give the following impression to men there: look at her and how she flaunts her body! It's sacralige! Is she dressed that way just to prove that women are equal? Women have the right to be treated with respect, but there are standards of modesty that must be upheald! (or some such culturally specific logic)

My point is, I grew up in a post feminist world. When I see women covering 90% of their bodies, to me it seems that they are being brainwashed into thinking that they're unclean. That may be an unfair, inaccurate, knee-jerk reaction, but that's just how I feel. In the middle east, men probably grow up with a very different impression of what women should wear, and react accordingly. I guess the point is, when in Rome, it helps to melt a little bit.

There's nothing wrong with dressing like a ninja if you have a job to do, like kill someone.
