What I want to do is play them in chronologic order according to the storyline. So for the PS2 games, it'd be:
GTA: VCS (1984)
GTA: VC (1986)
GTA:SA (1992 or 1993)
GTA LCS (???, I only know it's before GTA III)
GTA III ("present day" in 2001)
I don't own the top-down GTAs, so I may try to play them on the PC or something... where do they fit in the timeline? Obviously the GTA 1969 one would come before them all, but do GTA and GTA2 even have dates?
Once I know this, I can start. I want to get everything you can possibly get, above and beyond 100%... I already have a 100% GTA VC save, but I've been working on getting the actual criminal score as high as possible, which involves a lot of shooting with helicopters and blowing up helicopters. I figure this should keep me busy til GTA IV drops for 360, GTA: SA in particular because it's so goddamn big.
Anyway, GTA and GTA2 are when?

I've been playing the PC version of Vice City for the past couple of days, but there's no way I'd undertake what you're saying. In my opinion, the storyline is the weakest part of the GTA series.

A simple "I don't know" would've sufficed, I wasn't really hunting for commentary on R*'s games. Jerks.

Once I get home, I'll look it up... watching customers hanging out in here at 9:30 pm on a Saturday is annoying me more than it should.
But then, they should be home doing something fun, not fucking off at the mall.

So...
GTA 1969
GTA: VCS (1984)
GTA: VC (1986)
GTA:SA (1992 or 1993)
GTA (1997)
GTA LCS (???, I only know it's before GTA III)
GTA III ("present day" in 2001)
GTA 2 (future?)
I'll give it a go... I was working on VCS, but I guess I'll look for 1969 somewhere tomorrow.

I like the acting in the stories and the situations presented. But as a whole, the storyline is kind of weak. It starts off too ambitious and just goes south as the game progresses.

I believe GTA, London, and GTAII are all in different universes. For one, the cities don't match the maps in the III-i-verse, but the other is the characters. Aside from Michael Hunt, I don't think there's any reoccurring characters in the earlier games. And, no, Claude does not count.
III-VS-SA are all in the same universe, but I think IV is going to reinvent their world anyway... Not as much, because obviously things worked in the III-i-verse, so some things will transfer. But I wouldn't expect any solid answers moving from GTAIII to IV.
All this was to say, just play the PS2 games.

That's the only reason I play them. Really. The writers keep pretty great continuity. Love it. I wanna see more Donald Love and find out what happened to Machowski.

Technically the first GTA wasn't even made by Rockstar. It was from some other studio, Rockstar just slapped their name on it. I do like Vice City and vanilla GTA 3 though. Also, San Andreas Multiplayer is the best online game ever for when you're stoned.

I have to agree, but more power to you! I don't think I can play GTA after playing Crackdown, that game was so damn fun.

That's not exactly true. The original GTA was made by a company called "DMA Design", who later went on to become Rockstar North.
FUN FACT:
Bungie, of Halo fame, developed the game Oni for Rockstar. Before Bungie was bought by Microsoft, Halo was to be released on Mac, PC and PlayStation 2 with Rockstar as the game's publisher.

Also Fun Fact: GTA III wasn't Rockstar's first "sandbox" game. That was Body Harvest for the N64, a (shitty) sci-fi game. The engine of this game was the basis for the GTA III engine.

Well, I decided to just go ahead with the PS2 ones, since I've got them all sitting here. I'm about 6-7% into GTA VCS so far, and the story is ok, but some of the missions are trickier than I expected. Lots of reloading so far.

Oh my god that game is bad. I thought it looked cool and bought it. Bad idea.

body harvest and blast corps were spectacular for their time. when I go and try to play them now, I get goldenye syndrome. you know "it was so awesome when I used to paly it, so it must be awesome now, even though I'm not really having any fun now that the nostalgia wore off."

Blast Corps was the first video game I ever owned (before that it was rentals for about a year). I loved it, but it used to seem so hard. Then, I downloaded the ROM recently and started playing. It's still great, but it's also pretty easy.
Anyone play Space Invaders 64? That shit was great.
