Just as a request for everyone, could you please just copy and paste the important bits of an article rather than just make a post with only a link.
Such as:
Metroid Prime 3 and BioShock fight for title ' best game ' ever?
''Two games of the same genre, Metroid Prime 3: Corruption for the Wii and BioShock for the Xbox 360 and PC, could both try to end up in the list of the top 10 best videogames of all time. Both first-person adventures, and both pioniers according to critici, are getting nearly perfect scores.
BioShock has gained eight reviews, and the average is about 9,9 out of 10. According to GameRankings, BioShock needs only two reviews with a rate of 9,7 or higher to conquer the title 'best videogame to date'. BioShock would even beat The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time - which has been on top of the list for years.
Metroid Prime's first review came from the North-American magazine Nintendo Power, which gives it a perfect score of 10 out of 10. Nintendo Power didn't even gave The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, nor The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, this rating.''

I love the logic here.
"Well, everyone is giving Prime 3 and Bioshock high marks, so I guess that makes them two of the 10 best games EVARRR!!!!1111!!!!"
About that... no. The movie critics loved The Departed when it came out, but that doesn't make it one of the ten best movies of all-time, and anyone who would claim otherwise is simply lazy.
If someone was going to compile a list of the 100 best games ever, a serious list that took into account historical impact as well as popularity, you would not see Bioshock or Prime 3 on it. You would see a heavy focus on games from the 70s and 80s, with a fair amount of 90s titles. Few, if any games, from 2000-2005 would make the list, and no games from 2006-2007 would make the list because it's too early to making that sort of judgment about any of those games.
But let's say it was a major publication doing this list, like an EGM. And let's say Microsoft and 2K Games threw a shitload of money at EGM and made them put Bioshock on the list. You still wouldn't see it anywhere near the top ten. The top ten would be reserved for games like Pong, Pac-Man, Super Mario Bros., and Space Invaders, games which paved the way for the multimillion dollar graphically impressive sci-fi FPS rehashes that keep getting critical praise dumped on them for no apparent reason.

I remember seeing somewhere that EGM called Half-Life 2 the best game ever. What bullshit.

I don't think you can, nor should, rate all games from all eras together. As the technology changes, so does the focus of the games and how we play them. I believe that you can do lists of "games that had the greatest impact", "games that changed history," or "Games that broke records."
But comparing all games from the 70s on to games of today, just doen't work. Comparing Pong to Half Life 2 becasue they are both video games is just stupid.
It's like comparing a 1894 Benz Velo to a 2007Audi R10, even though they are both race cars, they are worlds apart.
In both examples, they are the same thing. (Video Games and Race Cars.) They both are based on the same idea. (Digitally created entertainment and Motor vehicals built for racing.) But, they are worlds apart.
I think best of titles should stick to a common theme, (Best Simulation Game.) or an era (Best 16-bit Video Game.)

The thing is, no one still drives a 1894 Benz Velo. People still play Pong. They pay $3.95 to DL it to their cellphones and play it while they're supposed to be listening to a lecture in history class. I think one of the main factors in a game's greatness has to be longetivity, and this is where a lot of FPS games fall flat. The FPS market isn't about creating a fun game, it's about developers pulling out their e-dicks and seeing who can provide the most "ZOMG IT LOOKS SO REALS!!!" experience. As polygon counts improve and graphics cards get better, the old FPS games fall to the wayside. The games are largely forgettable and it almost seems like they're intended to be. Your average FPS is seemingly designed to be beaten once and then played online until the next big bad FPS comes out next month and you forget all about the last one.

But, the problem is that those games are so far apart from one another! I am not even trying to say one is better than the other!
A game like HL2, or any other well made FPS, immerses you into the game world while you pay. You are worried more about running out of ammo, or trying to find a health pack before those guards in the distance see you. You are not thinking about tomorrow's history test, or that review at work.
Pong is Pong. It's fun to play with a friend. (Especially Pong Kombat. If anyone remembers playing that game years ago.) It's simple, yet highly competetive. But, it doesn't require more thought than "Should I anticipate his shot by moving up or down?".
It's like comparing a Comic Strip to a Novel. You like to read both, but only one draws you into its world.
You want to rank Pong, fine. Do it in groups such as "Most Addictive Games", "Best Multiplayer Game", "Best Timekillers", etc.
Just like HL2 should be in "Best FPS", "Best use of physics in a game", "Most Immersive","Best games you can play without needing to follow the storyline." etc.
Can you logically compare Pac Man against Super Mario 64? Or Dig Dug to God Of War? Castlevania to Gran Turismo? Raiden to Microsoft Flight Simulator? Combat! to Battlefield 2? Snoopy and The Red Baron (Atari 2600) to Crash Bandicoot?
The only way you can make an accurate list containing all videogames ever into one lump list is : "My Favorite Games in order of preference." And, even then the list only applies to you, not anyone else.
It seems that you are trying to just rank all games by their "Fun" factor. But what is "Fun?" Is riding a rollercoaster the same type of "Fun" as playing pool? Is playing soccer the same kind of "Fun" as building a model? They are all leisure activities. So should they all be considered in the same group if you were to make a list of the "The greatest leisure activities of all time?"

Yeah, I know you're not saying one is better than the other.
And I know that as the curator of the VGM, you have a respect for the video games of the past.
I'm just being cantankerous.

Get me a full character roster, and I'll be able to post more matches.
(Seriously, I'd post Spanky VS you, but I don't have his CAW. Can you send me a new MPK?)

Bioshock looks like another dumbed down, slow pace console FPS to me. As for Metroid, I don't like any of Nintendo's 3d take on their franchises.

Yeah, seriously, it maybe another sci-fi FPS, but you guys are frickin' crazy. Besides, I only said it's boring to keep with group mentality.
But saying it's the best game ever is just wrong.

I really hope Metroid Prime 3 beats it in sales or something, Bioshock seemed to me like one of those games everyone hypes and gives high marks, and then noone remembers it and its 5$ in a year.

greeneyedzeke and I were having a conversation about Prime 3 vs. Halo 3 the other day and which would sell better.
On the one hand, Microsoft is dumping a shitload of money into promoting Halo 3. There's Halo 3 Mountain Dew and you can fucking preorder a copy of the game at 7-11. Meanwhile, Nintendo is not. Nintendo has yet to seriously promote a Wii game. Zelda, which is arguably its most successful franchise, was a fucking launch title and its promotion was largely limited to those game montages they'd show you in the Wii console commercials. I saw a HELL of a lot more Red Steel ads than Zelda ads. At the same time, the Wii's game release schedule is so goddam slow right now that Nintendo doesn't really have to advertise. There are exactly two games worth buying coming out for the Wii this month, Prime 3 and Guilty Gear. So if you own a Wii and you need a new game, Prime 3 is one of two options. Well, unless you don't have Strikers yet for some reason.
At the end of the day, its going to come down to how many consoles are out there in homes. 360 had a year's head start, but Nintendo is rapidly closing the gap between 360s sold and Wiis sold. Both games are must-buys for their respective systems, so it's going to be a close battle. Of course, since Microsoft is hoping to make more money than Spider-Man 3 with Halo 3, they can declare victory even if they don't beat Prime 3 in sales. Since 360 games cost $60 vs. $50 for Wii games, Halo 3 can gross more without selling more. Of course, money grossed is meaningless due to ongoing inflation. Revenge of the Sith made way more money than A New Hope, but that doesn't take into account the MASSIVE rise in ticket prices in the 28 years between their releases.

Both Halo 3 and Metroid are the games I really want to play, but I think I'd rather play Metroid then Halo 3.

You're also forgetting about the $69.99 Collector's and the $129.99 Legendary editions of Halo 3.
