Bad control aside, the detail, atmosphere, and not being able to see your enemy made a much more unnerving game. Of course, RE4 wasn't really trying to be scary... Then again, none of the games try to be scary, just "jumpy". RE4 also got repetitive FAST.

In a lot of ways RE4 was a more fun game, but I have to agree with Tebor that the earlier ones were a lot creepier and more atmospheric.
The forced camera angles had that voyeuristic feel to them that made the original Halloween so good. But yeah, the controls weren't as good, and that was a major drawback.

I smell a Resident Evil/Night Trap crossover.

prior RE games were scary in more of a "oh shit! zombies!" way, whereas the theme of RE4 was pure survival. it was running for your life, doing what you could to fight off an army of guys with nothign on their minds but murdering you. as opposed to not knowing waht was aroudn the next corner, the scare of RE4 was knowing what was outside that door, and knowign that any minute now it's goign to break through your little barricade, and it wants you dead.

I'll take the over the shoulder cam IF they can live up to the level detail of the Game Cube games (hell, even RE2 and RE3). I was extremely pissed at the lack of this in RE4 (and RE:CV from awhile ago), mostly because of the camera. I realize focusing sucks with that camera, but that was no excuse to give up on quality!
Edit: That RE 3.5, which was RE4 before the overhaul, actually looked damn good. That had a camera combining over the shoulder and fixed, if I remember correctly. It would follow Leon around hallways, but switch POV after a certain point, closer to what RE:CV did. Plus, The Mist and Hookman looked like formidable foes in that sweet looking castle.

Well of course the perceived "quality" of a scene is gonna be higher with a pre-rendered, static background. They can take a snapshot of a rendered scene with a much higher polycount and richer color depth.
Now that I think about it, the old RE games kinda played like adventure games with guns and zombies. I miss adventure games.
I saw the beta to which you refer that Capcom scrapped. I can see why they scrapped it. Honestly, it may have looked nice in a way, but any niceness was ruined onceI saw the combat and how horridly stodgy it was, with the same ankle-biting bullshit because you can't get a bead on your enemies. I'll take RE4 over that any day where I can actually kill shit.
It's not like functional controls and frightening atmosphere are mutually exclusive after all. Just look at games like Clive Barker's Undying, or the first Silent Hill.

that's actually resident evil 4, build 2 (with build 3 being the one we got, and build 1 being turned into devil may cry.)

I should hope not. RE4 Wii Edition is fantastic. I don't care how much they have to dumb down the graphics. I can't go back to using the control stick and a laser pointer again unless they loosen up the aiming so I sweep quickly instead of slowly picking from side to side at a speed on par with old people fucking..

I rewatched the RE5 trailer on HD with clips from 4 integrated. I will say RE5 is looking significantly better than RE4. I just wish they'd release a story teaser... But I know they care because of the shot of the woman opening her eyes... Sherry?
Rumors are strongly suggesting a 2008 release... But can they be believed?

Oughta shut that woman up since there's a "strong black woman" lead in the game.

*shrug* With the exception of Leon, I always enjoyed playing the female character in the games when given an option.

Here's to completely ignoring the fact that those games used pre-rendered TWO DIMENSIONAL backgrounds.

There's a huge difference there. RE4 to the Wii was a port UP to a somewhat more capable system, and more importantly a very similar system from the point of view of development. It was a minimal investment.
From PS3/360 to the Wii is a huge step DOWN and would require a great deal of work, I'd imagine even much more than the original port of RE4 "down" to the PS2.
Anyway, I've sworn off paying money for Capcom games, so it should be a long time before I play this one (I guess I could crack and justify buying it used). Although I am burdened with some scarcely known information regarding it from my time at the company </shameless brag>

Well, there's got to be some difference. I mean, 'tis true that capcom will suck every scent out of a franchise that they can, but there are games they make for the sake of making a good video game. RE4 was one of those and I think RE5 may be too. Or maybe I'm just naive.

The problem here is that RE5 should have been co-developed for the Wii from the beginning.
RE5 still looks like Capcom doesn't care about franchises. But they can't fool me because after watching Umbrella Chronicles on YouTube, I know someone there does care about mythology. Too bad shooting things in mid air doesn't work in real life.

So anyway, the game's coming out in the middle of March and the Collector's Edition has me seriously considering getting the 360 version even though I don't have the system, but I have 2 friends that do.
* Chris Redfield Figurine
* Tricell Messenger Bag
* BSAA Patch
* Kijuju Keychain
* Bonus Disc including a making-of featurette, a digital art gallery and a trailer for Resident Evil Degeneration
* The game and bonus disc come packed in a Special Collector's Steel Book Case.
