Anyone watch Dateline's "To catch an i-jacker"? It was a stupid report on people stealing ipods and how Apple needs to be responsible for it. They tried to contact Apple to see what they do when someone reports a stolen ipod. Why does this even happen? If I were to carelessly leave my ipod lying around and someone took it (Which was what they made happen on the show) I don't think I'd call Apple and expect them to find it for me. If I were to leave me keys in my car and someone stole it I wouldn't call Ford and say "Dude, where's my car?". If I left a bag of DVD's without a receipt lying around, should I call Universal Studios and ask them to track them down at all cost? Dateline can go fuck itself.

They seriously had this? It's a fucking iPod. I can understand a car (and that's one hell of a stretch, mind you) but an iPod isn't something needed for everyday living. If you lose your goddamn iPod, then you're fucked. Either find it or shut up about it. I don't want to turn on Dateline to hear that you were too irresponsible with a fucking music player, and your whiny bitch ass wants Apple to either find it or fit the bill for a new one. Being fucking stupid isn't covered under the warranty, so shut the hell up.

I think some needs to do a Dateline on Dateline.

Tonight on Dateline: "Dateline...Is it really news, or are we just making it up as we go along?"

"Dateline: To catch somebody stealing a nickel that fell out of your pocket when you were paying for a falafel at the Greek counter in the food court and you were distracted by some guy with a really obnoxious cellphone ringtone that you later found out was "When Doves Cry" by Prince when you looked it up on Wikipedia."

I wouldn't be surprised if we keep seeing more elaborate set-ups in order to "catch a _____".

Pretty soon, they're going to set up a empty house with a sign out front that says, "FREE BEER INSIDE." Then when somebody comes in to the house they will find a case a beer in the kitchen, and on the floor a trail of $100 bills, that leads to a computer that has kiddie porn on it. Then as soon as the person picks up the last bill and looks up at the computer in front of them, they'll pop out and go , "GOTCHA, YOU SICK FUCK!"

Hypothetically speaking, if you knew someone who say worked for Apple, they could tell you that at the least a few times a week a call comes in wondering how an iPod can be tracked, either through GPS, remote access to home computers, or that the company can "zap" the iPod so that it doesn't work anymore... hypothetically speaking.

I didn't watch Dateline, I watched Keith Olbermann and he pretty much canceled the show to report on the bridge collapse. The winner of more relevant news story goes to Keith.

...Okay, I didn't watch the whole show...

See? And people don't want chips implanted on THEMSELVES! If there's a chip in your iPod, it's pretty much the same as having it embedded into your thigh. BIG BROTHER FOR CONTROL!!!

Yes, and those people are FUCKING RETARDED. It's a music player. That's it. It's not like a phone that has GPS or can have service canceled to it. Yes you can register with apple when you get it, but there's no guarentee that 1. anyone will register theirs 2. they use correct information 3. it still belongs to that person and they haven't sold or bartered it to someone else. One of the people Dateline "caught" took an ipod they had left on a bench in a mall. His excuse was "it's like finding a $100 bill in the street. How would I even go find the owner of that?" and that's a lot more reasonable a response than anything Dateline had to offer. They were also going out of their way to entice people into stealing this things by doing everything except writing "FREE IPOD" on the bag.

I agree that those people have unreasonable expectations. Not to mention, does any call center have the ability to verify the identity of the person calling? What if the person on the phone asking about their stolen product is really some stalker, just trying to find info. on his ex-partner or something? Then some stupid phone rep. gives out their address/phone number/email... that would fucking suck.

I'm surprised Apple hasn't cashed in on this yet. Add a $40 tracking chp, and then charge an extra $200 for it.

They could partner up with AT&T to install RFID tags in the iPods, so that they could track or "zap" them from the cellphone towers. An insanely stupid move, but anything to keep the retarded masses from losing their Britney Spears and P. Diddy.

Once my best friend (or maybe it was someone he knew) lost his iPod and he was complaining to me about. I tried to be nice but I just couldn't help it, so I told him that if he's a big enough dumbass to leave his iPod on a bench at school, then walk away and expect to find it there when he comes back that we couldn't be friends anymore.

Personally I think that if a company had the choice of either A) installing a tracking device for $40 or B) having people buy a new device (cell phone, iPod, computer, etc.)... they'd likely want to go with the most profitable option. Cell phone companies, though they have almost all have GPS tracking installed in phones, would NEVER help you locate a stolen phone... it's up to the authorities (police) to investigate stolen property, not the manufacturer.

I think it's ridiculous to make the assumption that Apple or any company could help you locate your lost/stolen property. You wouldn't go to the Chevrolet dealership to report your car stolen, obviously you'd file a report with police.

Tish, your wrong on both counts.

If your cellphone is stolen, then the Police can have your phone company track the phone, therefore the phone company helped.

Also, if you get your car stolen. Especially a Chevy (GM), most models now have OnStar which allows the police to find your stolen car with help from the dealer.

Though I agree that both cell phones & cars have built-in tracking, the issue is whether the company will release that info. to police. I would guess that's a no... GPS is used primarily for 911 purposes, not for tracking stolen property. I would almost guarantee that those companies have better things to do than track lost items. That being said, the topic pertains to iPod, which don't have tracking devices. So any procedure that may or may not be used by Chevy wouldn't help the issue with iPod anyway...
In conclusion, hold on to your shit. I've had a cell for at the least 6 years, and never once have I lost it. There's no goddamn reason why people are losing their iPod anyway. And if it is stolen, take the loss, the same as you would for a TV, computer, or even microwave oven... cuz that's right, people steal microwaves too! Cool

I don't have to take the loss on my TV, Microwave, Computer, etc...

I pay good money for full coverage, renters insurance, that includes theft. I have a two copies of all my important electronics' serial number in case of theft.

But, I agree with portible shit. Cellphones, MP3 players, Palm Pilots and the like. If your dumb enough to leave your expensive portable electronics lying around in public, you deserve have it stolen and to be taught a lesson.

Dateline trying to outsmart hackers... poorly:

From INQ:

A LOT OF MAKEUP can make you prettier, but it won't make you smarter. Michelle Madigan, Associate Producer for Dateline NBC found this out the hard way at Defcon.

According to sources at the show, she was there to do a piece called Hackers for Hire, with the goal of showing the criminal hacker underground and possibly outing an undercover fed. As Michelle was said to have said, "People in Kansas would be very interested in what is going on at Defcon". She was busted hours before she walked in the door, the first slide before the keynote was this, and the speaker asked to notify a goon (security) if she was spotted.

The people from Defcon talked to her four times, two before the show, two on the scene, and offered her press credentials and the opportunity to officially talk to the people she wanted to talk to. Four times she declined.

Too bad. They knew when her plane took off. They knew when her plane landed. They knew when she picked up her non-press attendee pass (human in the vernacular). They followed her around. They knew when she walked into the ladies room to wire up, camera and sound. She knew that the camera was not allowed but did it anyway, and told a goon that she was doing so.

We are told she was walking around 'panning' her bag and at times holding it like a camera. In the above shot, you can see the lens on her handbag, it is the shiny spot above the two silver circles. Michelle was told that a fed would be outed in the largest room in the show, and off she went.

Dark Tangent was on the stage, and had a lengthly preamble about undercover feds and the "spot the fed" contest. A fed was 'spotted', and I brought Winn Schwartau up on stage as a 'fed'. The conversation then went to integrity and how to go undercover ethically. For those of you who don't know, Winn is not a fed.

Then there was a new contest announced, spot the undercover reporter who is violating the Defcon rules. She was offered the option of coming up on stage and getting a press badge, but instead, Michelle bolted for the door, pushing a goon out of the way.

I caught up with her when she made it out the door, and what followed was a perp walk of epic proportions. People polled in the audience overwhelmingly voted that it was not cool. There were people swarming Michelle, Defcon people estimated 150 or so, as she walked for her car, quickly at first, slowing when it became obvious that she wasn't going to get away. She didn't look happy. Awwww.

Oddly enough, Michelle Madigan would not answer questions shouted at here, ranging from "What were you thinking?" to "Can I have your badge?" I guess she now knows what it feels like to be on the others side of the 'to catch a predator' stories.

In the end, she got into her car and promptly drove into a dead end corner of the parking lot. Needless to say, there was a large crowd of people who found it very amusing when she had to back up and drive through the crowd to get out of the parking lot.

The moral of the story? Don't screw around with people who are smarter than you. I guess Dateline NBC hasn't learned this lesson.

I hope you all learned about the importance of having a patsy. Problem was here, they had the patsy, but no follow through.
