Sony has delivered the news early of E3, announcing a $100 price cut for the PS3 in north America.

The confirmation of the cut, rumoured on gaming websites for the last few days, comes hot on the heels of a straight-up denial from Sony that the price cut would take place. On Friday, Sony President Ryoji Chubachi told reporters that there were "no immediate plans" to reduce the PS3 price point.

Chubachi must have a fairly narrow definition of immediate, as Sony's Dave Karraker confirmed a price cut on Sunday.

The 60GB console will go from $599 to $499, whilst a new 80GB console will appear at $599, bundled with Motorstorm.

Sony says that the larger hard drive will eventually facilitate movie downloading, but the capacity falls short of the Xbox 360 Elite 120GB hard drive, which already offers movie and TV downloads through Xbox Live.

It's tough for Sony to maintain respect amongst the press, and the gaming public, when they flat out deny a story until the second they put out the press release. Intel used to do a similar thing, and that just bought them the ire of the enthusiasts, a community they've had to work hard to woo back. Is Sony making the same close-minded mistake?

Gee, I dunno.

Let's see 5 games worth getting on the PS3:

Metal Gear Solid 4
Final Fantasy 13
?
?
?

I say no.

Yeah, it is kinda sad that Sony had to drop the price that early in it's life, and putting in a pack-in game? That's never been done for home consoles since the SNES! I mean, it's not even selling half as much as the Wii in Japan or the 360 here. That's the very meaning of being fucked in the ass.

I'd add Folklore to that list, but yeah. Still not enough to get me to want one, not to mention the system itself looks ass ugly.

I have no problem seeing how the PS3 would be fun to play, but even with the $100 price cut it's still too expensive for most people. They need to market the machine better than they have been (those terribly creepy/shitty commercials are not cutting it, and they're not showing its graphic and gameplay capabilities) and assure people that better games are coming out and they will be coming out at a more rapid pace.

Despite the reported failure of the PS3, Sony continues to push PS2 units at an impressive rate.

That's why Sony went to work on cutting down the cost and weight of PS2 production to make them even more profitable. The new PS2 is a whopping one-third the weight of the old PS2. The console has been trimmed from 900 grams to 600 grams and the power adapter has been slashed from 350 grams to just 250 grams.

While the external frame remains unchanged, the lighter console makes for easier portability and awesomeness.

And, yes we are talking about the newer slim stlye PS2s. the ones that are about the same size as a DVD case.

Like they need to be any lighter. I keep one in my backpack as is, and have never had a complant about the weight.
